HP DV9843CL Pavilion Notebook PC – REFURBISHED Review

This laptop is awesome. It packs a lot of features, and has been outstanding. I really like the HDMI for watching movies on the BLU ray player on my flatscreen. The laptop’s screen is brilliant on its own, and the case is built for space travel…

Bad things, or stuff I’m not used to yet…the keys are very smooth, almost slippery. The Quickstart buttons stopped working, but I heard that this was a problem on some other review, but I’m sure it is just a control panel switch I inadvertently changed, or a driver that I need to download.

Great things…HDMI, ESATA connection, Subwoofer!, and the remote control for media…Very cool! The bluetooth connection is nice too, I can send a pic off my phone right to it, and it receives it automatically.
I was nervous buying refurb, but my computer had one dent/crack in case less than 1/4 of an inch long, doesn’t affect performance, and even with the blemish, it still is by far the most beautiful laptop I’ve ever seen.

Millenium Falcon was the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, which is why I nicknamed this 2.0 ghz with 4 ddr2 cuz its smoking fast, but another name that comes to mind is the Silver Surfer, the finish is amazing on this laptop. Did I mention it had a BLU Ray drive?

give yourself a favor and dont buy this – K. Agoston – Netherlands
I had this laptop for less than 2 years. My problems?

First, in the second week of use, the harddisk stopped working (was a bios problem).

Second, the sound never worked well: you could always hear a click before the transient when playing back samples (and subtle but IRRITATING crackling noise during hi-bitrate mp3/flac playback). I had to buy an external soundcard because the laptop just woudn’t cut it for decent (decent, not hi-fi!) listening – or ANY kind of sound editing/music production.

Third, the graphic card got really warm just from watching youtube – any 3D game (even Quake 3 which isn’t much of a hardcore resourcemonger) made my fingers resting on the WASD area burn – literally. Eventually, just after 2 years, the graphic card failed completely: one day it was OK (all things considered…), the next day I got a black screen when I started it up. No number of restarts solved this. I may mention that there were artifacts (blue pixelnoise/blue areas on the grey HP logo) at the POST screen for like 6 months.

This was my 5th HP laptop in 6 years – of which only one survives to this day (a cute lil NC6000). I witnessed the decline of HP, first in the quality of execution and then the quality of hardware solutions. The DV8943CL had a build quality that would freak out persons who never touched a Mac, VAIO or Thinkpad. It literally has millimeter scale assembly tolerances, combined with very low quality plastics. The kind they use in cheap Chinese toys for 3rd world exports.

BTW I used it for photo processing, graphics, video montage, live montage (VJ performance), network debugging, coding, presentations, sound design, music production. It has a low mobility but excellent battery life (5 hours new, 3 hours after all this time – on Vista 64 Balanced). Ahh, speaking of photos, the screen is HORRIBLE: horrible backlightin’, horrible vertical view angle(s?), horrible color reproduction (although fortunately not in the oversaturated way VAIO plays these days).

For the Love of God, I know it’s a good price (that’s why I bought it and tried to convince myself “it will work out”) but the nerves and durability compensate more than enough!!!

CUPERTINO, California-November 14, 2006-Apple® today announced it is teaming up with Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United to deliver the first seamless integration between iPod® and in-flight entertainment systems. These six airlines will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections which power and charge their iPods during flight and allow the video content on their iPods to be viewed on the seat back displays.

“There is no better traveling companion than an iPod, and now travelers can power their iPods during flight and even watch their iPod movies and TV shows on their seat back displays,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing. “We're excited to work with Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United to offer iPod users an even better in-flight experience.”

In-flight iPod connectivity will be available to Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United passengers beginning in mid 2007. Additionally, Apple is working with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to bring even more leading airlines in-flight iPod connectivity in the future.

The iPod ecosystem continues to flourish with more than 3,000 accessories made specifically for iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity.

iPod and iTunes® are leading the digital music revolution, providing the best way to listen to music on the go, at home, in the car and now on an airplane. With nearly 70 million iPods sold, the iPod is the world's most popular digital music and portable video player and the iTunes Store is the number one online music store with over 1.5 billion songs purchased and downloaded worldwide. The iTunes Store (www.itunes.com) features over 3.5 million songs, 65,000 podcasts, 20,000 audiobooks, 5,000 music videos, 250 television shows and over 100 movies from Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online store.

• Do yourselves a favor and go read this post at Orlando Pinstriped Post about how efficiently Dwight Howard has scored in various roles in Orlando’s offense during this series—i.e. on post-ups, as the roll man on screen/rolls, in transition, etc. The numbers are stark—Howard can’t score in the post, and he has been devastating in the screen/roll and on the offensive glass.

One tidbit of the many you will find in friendly chart format: Howard is 14-of-36 (39 percent) on post-ups. In other words: There is no reason for Boston to double Howard in the post unless a switch has produced a mismatch.

The other question this data raises: What took Orlando so long to move from its four-in/one-out offense to one centered on screen/rolls? Again: The Magic ran 33 screen/rolls combined in the first three games and 43 in Game 4 alone, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

Stan Van Gundy is a great coach, and he made the proper adjustments. But he should have made them sooner.

• At Pro Basketball Talk, Matt Moore (who is not fond on your Boston Celtics but is still a nice person and smart, smart NBA writer) suggests that Van Gundy must be open to make further adjustments, even dramatic ones, to keep his team alive. Among Moore’s suggestions: More J.J. Redick (he’s +21 in this series) and less Vince Carter (-23).

• Barack Obama is picking the Los Angeles Lakers to defeat the Boston Celtics in the Finals, thus giving an immediate boost to the legitimacy of the Tea Party movement. (Kidding). Bloomberg reports on Obama’s interview with Marv Albert:

“I’ve got to go with the Lakers again,” Obama said in the interview that will begin airing on NBA TV today. “Boston’s a veteran club, but the Lakers are looking pretty good.”

Obama called Bryant the “the fiercest competitor in the league” and Jackson “the best coach in the NBA right now.” Of Gasol, Obama said “he may be the best big man in the league.”

• A win by Orlando tonight would be a rare, rare thing in NBA history. Of the prior 93 NBA teams who have fallen behind 3-0 in series, only 9 have even forced a Game 6. (None have come back to win, of course).

Also: The Celtics have led a best-of-seven series 11 times in their history, and none have gone beyond Game 5, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

That’s it for now. We’ll have more later.

As you browse the web during the day, you probably find items that catch your interest and would like to save. The Zoho Notebook Helper extension for Firefox provides an easy way to add those items to your Zoho account.

Using Zoho Notebook Helper

Using the extension is easy and straightforward. Highlight the text, images, and links that you want to save, right click and select Add to Zoho Notebook.

Note: It is recommended that you leave your status bar visible while using the extension.

You can choose to add the selection to a new or pre-existing notebook or page. We created a new page for our example.

Once your selection has been added to your account, you can see how nicely the formatting is retained. Notice the link at the top of the note…clicking on it will open the original webpage in a new tab if clicked on. The notebook mini pane can also pop out into a separate window if needed.

You can resize the new external window as desired and send it back to your browser when ready. You can see an even better view of how well the formatting with regard to images, etc. is retained here.

A quick look inside our notebook account and the notes that were just added.

A second example added to our notebook account using a newly created page. As you build up the number of notebooks and pages, you can easily navigate between them using the drop-down menu in the mini pane’s upper right corner.

Two new sets of notes each with their own page displaying nicely in our online account. The ease of use makes this a must-have extension for Zoho fans.

Keep in mind that the extension will be temporarily disabled if you have your online account open in a tab.

Conclusion

Zoho Office does not get much love compared to other online office solutions like Google Docs, or the new Microsoft Web Apps. However, if you are a Zoho user, the Zoho Notebook Helper extension makes it very easy to add those notes, links, and images to your online account for later reference.
