Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d: Multimedia Laptop Goes 3D

The 3D laptops keep rolling out. This time from Lenovo, who's outfitted the IdeaPad Y560 notebook with an extra dimension in the Y560d. It's got the same Core i7 goodness, a 15.6-inch (1366×768) display, and starts at $1200. Not shabby!

Of course, you'll have to upgrade if you want that Core i7, ATI Radeon HD5730 1GB graphics, or 750GB hard drive; the starting price sticks you with a still decent Core i3 processor, Intel's not-so-great integrated graphics, and a 250GB hard drive. Even the 3D panel, software, and glasses are extra options, meaning that it's going to quite a bit more to outfit the Y560d for a full 3D multimedia experience.

It also would've been nice to see 3D Blu-ray compatibility and Nvidia Optimus technology for easy graphics switching. While there's not much 3D Blu-ray content to choose from currently, it'd be nice to be a little more future-rpoof.

Still: it's early days for 3D laptops, and everyone's still figuring out what exactly consumers want—including consumers. If it's a relatively affordable 3D multimedia notebook that can be tricked out to the gills, the Y560d might just be onto something.

Lenovo Delivers on the Three D's with its First 3D Laptop; Dynamic, Dazzling and Dramatic

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – June 17, 2010: Lenovo (HKSE: 0992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d, the company's first multimedia laptop with a 3D display. The Y560d features the TriDef® 3D technology solution, which includes a 3D screen, software and glasses 1, so users can experience the unique sensation of visual immersion within their favorite movies, pictures and games.

“Fun is a notebook that brings multimedia to life-and the IdeaPad Y560d does this in a dramatic fashion with a truly unique 3D viewing experience,” said Dion Weisler, vice president, business operations, Lenovo. “While 3D technology has been around for ages, it has not been readily accessible to consumers within the home. Lenovo is helping bridge this gap by delivering consumers a 3D experience on a familiar PC platform that can be viewed and enjoyed when and where they want.”

The 15.6-inch Y560d 3D-enabled multimedia laptop, with its High-Def 16:9 widescreen and polarizer glasses, provides the optimal 3-dimensional experience when combined with compatible 3D movies and games.

With TriDef® 3-D technology, users can also experience 3D on their standard 2D videos and photos. The TriDef Media Player transforms a standard movie into a 3D experience 2. Photos take on a whole new life, thanks to the TriDef Photo Transformer that turns standard photos into eye-popping 3D.

The Y560d laptop includes Lenovo's new innovative Enhanced Experience RapidDrive technology, which seamlessly combines SSD and HDD storage solutions to deliver even faster Windows 7 boot-up times and significantly improve application performance3. Lenovo Enhanced Experience for Windows 7 is a unique Lenovo certification that delivers an optimized boot-up and shutdown process, rich multimedia capabilities and easy system maintenance tools. With RapidDrive technology, users can experience Windows 7 boot up 66% faster4, start favorite applications two-times faster5, and copy files within the computer in less than half the time6. The Y560d can be configured with up to 8GB DDR3 memory and up to 750BG HDD storage so users don't have to worry about running out of hard drive capacity when saving their favorite movies, music and games.

The Y560d will be available with JBL-designed speakers and Dolby® Home Theater™ surround sound – perfect for enjoying music and movies. Powered with up to an Intel Core™ i7 processor featuring Intel Turbo Boost Technology7 for delivering extra GHz when you need it, and the latest high-performance ATI Radeon™ HD5730 1GB graphics card, the Y560d is more than capable of running the latest games. With Switchable Graphics, users can toggle between performance and energy-saving modes for extended battery life. The laptop also includes an optional Blu-ray Disc™ drive, HD graphics support and an HDMI output for connecting to other HD devices such as a TV or gaming console2.

Additional features on the Y560d include SlideNav – an intelligent touch-sensitive slide bar application for easy desktop navigation; OneKey Theater II for optimized video playback; and an Ambient Light Sensor that automatically adjusts the PC screen brightness based on the user's distance from the display. For staying connected while on the move, the Y560d also comes with optional high-speed integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Lenovo has joined the ranks of other notebook manufacturers with their first 3D laptop offering. The IdeaPad Y560d has a 15.6-inch screen with a special coating from a company called TriDef that works in conjunction with polarized glasses to produce a 3D effect. Unfortunately, 3D Bluray support is a no-go on this laptop, but the TriDef tech should allow 2D films to have a 3D esque effect. Other specs include the choice of Intel Core i3 through Core i7 processors, a HDD/SDD hybrid called the Lenovo RapidDrive, an ATI Radeon HD5720 GPU, and up to 8GB DDR3 RAM.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d is available at the end of the month, starting at $1,200.

A Product Review of the 14.1″ Sony VAIO VGN-CR420E/N Laptop

Toshiba RP-12 by TRANSISTOR RADIOS

{Photos noir et blanc

The most popular price range for laptops is currently the $700-800 range. This Toshiba Satellite sits firmly within that range and is one of their top selling models. I have gotten my hands on one and I'm going to let you know what you can expect, as well as who can get the most out of owning one of these notebooks. First I'm going to start with the basics.

Hardware:

Imaging: Integrated Webcam

Display: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550

Storage: 200GB

RAM: 2 GB RAM (expandable to 4GB)

Optical Drive: CD R / RW burner with integrated DVD +/- R RW dual layer burner

Graphics Accelerator: Integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics (using up to 256mgs of shared RAM)

Operating on: Windows Vista Home Premium

Dimensions: 14.3″ x 10.5″ x 1.55″

Weight: 6lbs

At first glance this Toshiba is a little larger than I would like weighing in at 6lbs and being over an inch and a half thick when closed up. Once you open it up you notice that the screen really is fairly nice for this price range. Toshiba does a great job on their screens and this one has a nice gloss and a resolution you could compared to something like a 720p television. Though this isn't what you would refer to as an entertainment PC it does have a spacious hard drive. The graphics card isn't great and uses the system's ram as its memory which strains the system's limited resources. The 1.83 Intel is also a little underpowered. It is a decent mobile device because it gets good mileage out of the battery; it is just a little bulky.

Toshiba has a good deal of trial ware preinstalled on this notebook so the first thing I would recommend doing if you have made the purchase would be to remove most of it. A great deal of it starts up and runs in the background when you boot up the PC. You can see them down on the system bar, there are so many it doesn't even display them all. It isn't quite as bad with Toshiba as it is with some manufacturers (cough cough … Sony).

Connectivity:

Integrated Wireless

1 Ethernet port

4 2.0 USB ports (gold standard PC input, use these to connect to your digital camera, printer or whatever)

1 FireWire port (for high speed data transfer between another PC or your digital camcorder)

1 VGA output (to connect to a standard PC monitor)

1 S-Video output (can connect to compatible TV's or to a projector)

1 audio out / 1 microphone in

ExpressCard slot

The connectivity is standard although mine doesn't have Bluetooth bundled. This is something that I would've expected even at this price point. It isn't a big deal because you can always buy a separate dongle but it is a little disappointing. I do like seeing that there is 4 not just 3 USB ports. Otherwise everything is standard and what I like to see. Currently priced at $769 it is a little high for my tastes. I would like to see it closer to $699 before I would pull the trigger. In the end it will please about any typical notebook user.

A Product Review of the 14.1″ Sony VAIO VGN-CR420E/N Laptop

Acer laptop 2556 by dontvail

{Cerstvé obrázky – práve nafotené.

Sony's Vaio is one of the most popular notebook product lines on the market. It may be the sexy sleek look that Sony gives all their Vaios or their renowned service and good name. Either way these Vaio's are flying of the shelf and I'm lucky to have my hands on the VGN-CR390E/B 14.1″ laptop. I'm going to let you know how this sleek black notebook performs and who is going to enjoy this product the most. First let me get started with the basics.

Hardware:

Display: 14.1-inch screen

Imaging: Integrated Webcam

Processor: 2.0 Intel Core 2 Duo

Storage: 250 GB hard drive

RAM: 2 GB RAM (expandable up to a 4 GB maximum)

Optical dive: CD R/RW with and integrated DVD +/- R RW burner

Graphics Card: Integrated Intel GMA X3100 (which dips into shared system resources)

Dimensions: 13.2″ x 9.8″ x 1.67″

Weight: 5.5 pounds.

Included: biometric fingerprint reader

I love the mobility. It is under 6lbs and that is my cutoff for 14″ notebooks. Its battery life is decent as well coming in between 2 or 4 hours depending on how you're using it. I would be on the number being closer to 2 hours, because that is with wireless internet and Bluetooth activated. If you're on a plane or something just watching DVD's and you disable the wireless, you might get closer to 3.

The processor is strong and the hard drive is large. I would like to see a little more Ram for the cost of this notebook. This is especially true since the integrated video card uses system resources. I could do without the biometric reader, I don't know anyone that uses theirs and it wastes resources, drives up costs and adds weight. That is a lot for a gimmick.

Everything else is great. You of course get the clear crisp beautifully XBRITE glossy Sony screen that these Vaios are renowned for. You can compare the clarity to something like one of their 720p Bravias.

Connectivity:

Integrated Bluetooth

Integrated WiFi

3 2.0 USB ports (industry standard connections to be used for printer, digital cameras, or MP3 players)

1 FireWire (for fast data transfer from PC to PC or from your digital camcorder)

1 Ethernet port

ExpressCard slot

Memory Stick and SD card readers

1 VGA output (to be used with standard PC monitors)

1 S-Video output (typically used with projectors, can be used with some compatible televisions)

I like the connectivity, they haven't left anything out. As a bonus I would like to see some sort of HD output but I guess it isn't something I could expect at this price point or with this weak graphics card. This would be a great choice for the student, business professional or an around the house notebook. It won't become the backbone of your entertainment center, but it has enough power to give you plenty of fun. It will play most games but not necessarily with the graphics cranked all the way up. At $1179 it is probably an OK deal. Sony doesn't drop their prices too much, so I guess there would be no real use waiting around on this one, I don't see it going on sale anytime soon truthfully.

LG has a new ultrathin netbook / laptop for us and what better place than CES 2010 in Las Vegas to make it official? It’s a 11.6-inch machine which explains my problem. I don’t know if it should be included in the netbook or the laptop category. But after all, netbooks are simply smaller laptops so I wouldn’t be wrong no matter what I’d call it!

The LG X300 is an ultra-portable computer which only weighs 970g and measures 17.6mm in thickness. Well, sure, it’s not thinner than Adamo XPS from Dell but it’s almost there.

The laptop will offer you a 11.6-inch LCD display, a unique “reflective” keyboard and a borderless touchpad which features hidden lighting and tactile feedback. Inside that supple case you’ll find a 2.0GHz Intel Menlow platform based on Intel’s Atom Z550 chip, 2GB of RAM and a SSD ready to store your precious data. A simple 2-cell battery will last up to seven hours which is quite remarkable. Other features include Bluetooth connectivity, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, SRS TruSurround HD sound and a built-in 3G modem chipset.

Besides being ultra-slim and ultra-portable the laptop is also fanless which means it’s ready to go with you everywhere without disturbing the ones around you. Maybe James Bond could use one as it should fit very well in his next smart car that he’s going to destroy.

LG has added the Smart Pack to the X300 which is said to be the “smartest software suite for notebook and mobile PC users.” The Smart POP functionality will help you synchronize your smartphone with your PC over Bluetooth which means you’ll be able to read and reply to SMS messages straight from the computer without even touching the handset.

The X300 will be available worldwide starting with February, but we have no pricing details for you at this time. What do you say? Would you pick the LG X300 over any existing netbook?

VAIO /VGN-FE41Z , Sony Laptop

Strobist and a laptop by apol3

Canon Eos 20d bei Amazon

The Sony VAIO VGN-NR110E/T is a laptop with a 15.4″ screen and I've had the opportunity to spend some time with one. It is currently one of Sony's top selling models and has a low price compared to many of Sony's other offerings. I'm going to let you know what it's capable of doing right out of the box and where it may need a little help. Without further ado let me introduce you to the Sony VAIO VGN-NR110E/T.

Under the hood:

Laptop Screen Size: 15.4″ screen

Processor: A dual-core 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 processor

RAM: 1 GB of RAM (DRAM) (expandable to 2GB)

Hard Drive: 120 GB Hard drive (serial ATA)

Girth: 10.6″ long 14.2″ wide and 1.5″ tall

Weight: A hefty 6.2 lbs

Video: Running on an integrated Intel X3100 video card

Running on: Windows Vista home premium.

First of all the most striking feature about this model is that it is brown. It's not too often you see a brown laptop and there are certain very few brown Sony Vaios, however the VAIO VGN-NR110E/T is an exception. While that is fairly novel looks only go so far with me, so on with the rest of its story. Just like with most Sony laptops this Vaio has a wonderfully bright and vibrant screen that utilizes the proprietary XBRITE-ECO technology. These screens are amazing and I might argue some of the best on the market today. Just go to your local retailer and compare the Sony's with the other models. However I don't know that pure screen clarity can win me over.

This is a low priced Sony and I'm sure we'll be paying for it elsewhere, right? Well that elsewhere is noticeable in just about every other facet of this Vaio. First is the RAM. With only 1 GB I've noticed some serious problems with its responsiveness straight out of the box. While it is expandable to 2 GB which is not tremendous in itself, no one wants to buy a new laptop and immediately drop in an upgrade. Next is the fact that Sony markets the VAIO VGN-NR110E/T as a multimedia center being capable of replacing your digital video recorder. This won't be the case with the slim 120 GB hard drive. While with preloaded Windows Vista Home Premium is fully capable, it's just not feasible especially when you consider the paltry connections and integrated graphics card (with gasp shared memory!). The resolution it is capable of achieving is a standard 1280 x 800, so don't expect True HD.

Lastly the pure girth of the thing is a little surprising. This thing isn't light for a 15.4″ laptop. I would consider it a middleweight compared to the other offerings at this 500-700 price range. Also the battery life isn't winning me over. I'm getting around 3 hours on average.

Connectivity:

Wireless : Integrated 802.11b/g

4 USB 2.0 ports (for connecting things like digital cameras or printers)

1 Firewire port (for high speed video transfer from a digital video camera)

1 Memory stick /pro/ duo reader (for Sony brand digital cameras and equipment)

1 Expresscard 34 slot

1 SD slot (for your other equipment / digital cameras / phones / PDA's that happen to use SD cards)

The connectivity is fairly standard. The 4 USB ports are nice, I would say from my experience 3 are standard on most laptops and anything more a bonus. So score one for Sony there. The lack of integrated Bluetooth on the VAIO VGN-NR110E/T is a bit of a letdown especially for a Sony. Bluetooth integration is becoming more and more common even on the “budget” laptops. The firewire connection is a bit baffling considering the integrated graphics card and the small hard drive, you won't doing to movie making on this machine, so why include it?

At around $600 I don't understand why the Sony VAIO VGN-NR110E/T is selling so well. The comparables have more to offer. Maybe it's the lovely brown exterior or people become mesmorized by the XBRITE screen in the store. Sony does generally have a good quality product with nice technical support so maybe it's the name that people are buying. Either way I don't think it's worth it right now. I would hold off on purchasing this one for a few months down the road when Sony rolls out a few new Vaio laptops and the VAIO VGN-NR110E/T goes on sale, but right now I'd stay away.

If you do happen to pick one up I recommend clearing out all the trialware Sony is notorious for including on their laptops and PC's. Many of it is proprietary stuff that offers little more than features already included in your Window's Home Vista Premium edition. Especially considering the lack of RAM this will help performance immediately.

How to Troubleshoot an Acer Laptop Mouse

Ladyshaver

Picking out a laptop for college is a little more tricky then high school; you have more things to consider and price is usually at the top of the list. Before you do anything you have to write down your lists of needs and wants and yes, there is a difference between them. Some things to consider are: what classes will you be taking, with you be doing any technical drawing or CAD applications, will you have access to WiFi, is it mainly going to be used for word processing and do you need to invest in something with a larger than normal screen? We spent a lot of time going over laptop options and made more than a few visits to local office supply and computer stores. Unless you take a notebook with you and write down your personal take on each of them, you are going to get thoroughly confused in the process. Don't be swayed by slick talking sales clerks or lured in my a low price that is only attainable with rebates. Go in with a budget and stick to it.

What do you need to know when shopping for a laptop?

Never bank on getting rebates. They can get lost in the mail, denied for a variety of reasons, take forever to process, not be applicable to the model you purchased, be declined by the manufacturer, be expired. Another thing to keep in mind is if you have a problem with your laptop and need to return it, if you removed the UPC codes you may not be able to make an exchange or return and some stores will subject you to a 10 – 20% restocking fee regardless of the reason.

Consider getting insurance. If you still live with your parents you can ask them about having the laptop insured on their home owners policy. In most States this will only cover theft and you will need to fill out a police report and wait for a claim.

Buy accessories now instead of later. If you think you are going to need an external hard drive, mouse, keyboard or USB drive, get them now when they are on sale rather than later. You might even be able to get one or two of those items for free if you shop around for stores offering in store specials.

Go for function over looks. You might see a great looking laptop that knocks your socks off but looks are not everything. Look at the specs on it, use some of the programs and see if it is going to be something that helps you at school or becomes a burden to use.

You might not know every single class you are taking but it is a safe bet that you will need to have a laptop that can do word processing, printing and spreadsheets. That's all packaged in the software and almost every single laptop that we looked at came with Windows Vista Home Premium although some of them did give you the option to buy the Student version for about a hundred dollars extra.

When shopping for a laptop don't settle for the first thing you see with a low price; if you have to go out and buy add on components for it later in the school year, any saving that you may have made on the initial purchase just went out the window. Think, research and shop around for the best deal possible!
