HP DV9843CL Pavilion Notebook PC – REFURBISHED Review

This laptop is awesome. It packs a lot of features, and has been outstanding. I really like the HDMI for watching movies on the BLU ray player on my flatscreen. The laptop’s screen is brilliant on its own, and the case is built for space travel…

Bad things, or stuff I’m not used to yet…the keys are very smooth, almost slippery. The Quickstart buttons stopped working, but I heard that this was a problem on some other review, but I’m sure it is just a control panel switch I inadvertently changed, or a driver that I need to download.

Great things…HDMI, ESATA connection, Subwoofer!, and the remote control for media…Very cool! The bluetooth connection is nice too, I can send a pic off my phone right to it, and it receives it automatically.
I was nervous buying refurb, but my computer had one dent/crack in case less than 1/4 of an inch long, doesn’t affect performance, and even with the blemish, it still is by far the most beautiful laptop I’ve ever seen.

Millenium Falcon was the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, which is why I nicknamed this 2.0 ghz with 4 ddr2 cuz its smoking fast, but another name that comes to mind is the Silver Surfer, the finish is amazing on this laptop. Did I mention it had a BLU Ray drive?

give yourself a favor and dont buy this – K. Agoston – Netherlands
I had this laptop for less than 2 years. My problems?

First, in the second week of use, the harddisk stopped working (was a bios problem).

Second, the sound never worked well: you could always hear a click before the transient when playing back samples (and subtle but IRRITATING crackling noise during hi-bitrate mp3/flac playback). I had to buy an external soundcard because the laptop just woudn’t cut it for decent (decent, not hi-fi!) listening – or ANY kind of sound editing/music production.

Third, the graphic card got really warm just from watching youtube – any 3D game (even Quake 3 which isn’t much of a hardcore resourcemonger) made my fingers resting on the WASD area burn – literally. Eventually, just after 2 years, the graphic card failed completely: one day it was OK (all things considered…), the next day I got a black screen when I started it up. No number of restarts solved this. I may mention that there were artifacts (blue pixelnoise/blue areas on the grey HP logo) at the POST screen for like 6 months.

This was my 5th HP laptop in 6 years – of which only one survives to this day (a cute lil NC6000). I witnessed the decline of HP, first in the quality of execution and then the quality of hardware solutions. The DV8943CL had a build quality that would freak out persons who never touched a Mac, VAIO or Thinkpad. It literally has millimeter scale assembly tolerances, combined with very low quality plastics. The kind they use in cheap Chinese toys for 3rd world exports.

BTW I used it for photo processing, graphics, video montage, live montage (VJ performance), network debugging, coding, presentations, sound design, music production. It has a low mobility but excellent battery life (5 hours new, 3 hours after all this time – on Vista 64 Balanced). Ahh, speaking of photos, the screen is HORRIBLE: horrible backlightin’, horrible vertical view angle(s?), horrible color reproduction (although fortunately not in the oversaturated way VAIO plays these days).

For the Love of God, I know it’s a good price (that’s why I bought it and tried to convince myself “it will work out”) but the nerves and durability compensate more than enough!!!

Alysha Castonguay Topless Photos Ignite Controversy

I have taken some Pix in the last months – please tell me when you like them:

Fliegende Fische auf dem Weg ins Parkhaus by Henning Onken

When friends and guests first enter your home, what is the first room they see? Most likely it's a foyer or front entryway. Making your foyer friendly and inviting will give your guests a pleasant welcome, and be a refreshing room for your to enter when returning home. Since foyers are generally a small area, it is best to keep your decorations to one theme. My personal favorite is to decorate the foyer in your home with personal family photos.

Types of Foyers
If your foyer has several doorways, or windows, try decorating the space with small, slender tables, topped with a variety of family photos.

If your foyer has at least one wall that is wider than the doorways, try making a photo collage arrangement on that wall. Then, accent that main wall with a small arrangement of photos on the other smaller spaces between doorways.

What Photos Do I Choose?
When selecting the photos to put on display, you have several options.

You could choose to decorate your foyer with all candid photos of family, friends and children being active. This would be a great time to display babies destroying birthday cakes, dad showing off the big catch or your puppy playfully discovering the backyard.

Or, you could opt for all the professional family portraits that you have gathered over the years. People love to stop and gaze at how people have changed through the years, and we all have spare school pictures in a drawer somewhere! This is also a great opportunity to display those old photographs of great-great grandparents.

If you have a lot of photographs, you may want to make a seasonal display. How fun is it to look back at old Christmas pictures while the holiday is approaching? As we anticipate Spring, fill your foyer with pictures of bright flowers and lush landscapes. If you're planning a birthday party, fill your foyer with pictures of the birthday person!

If you have just been on a vacation, show off the highlights of your trip by decorating your foyer with enlargements of your vacation photos. Sunsets, scenery, landscapes and candid moments will allow you to re-live the trip each time you enter your home.

Another fun way to decorate your foyer with family photographs is to have your favorite photos reprinted in black and white or sepia brown-tone, and just display monochromatic photographs!

If you have a home photo printer and some basic photo editing software on your computer, you can easily reprint your favorite digital photographs in black and white or sepia brown-tone. Most photo editing programs have a one button option for these fun features.

What Type of Picture Frames Should I Use?
When decorating your foyer, plan to use frames that will accentuate your wall color and floor covering. When in doubt, wooden frames that accent furniture that is visible nearby will look great. Solid black frames are always classic, and match most decor, too. If you choose to go with a holiday theme, you may want to choose decorative frames that accentuate the holiday season.

No matter what theme, frame or design style you choose for your foyer, you will surely be welcomed each time you step into your home and see warm inviting memories staring back at you.

Today, we're highlighting Todd Van Fleet – an outstanding photographer who is participating in The Big Picture – where great agencies and great photographers connect.

In Lander, Wyoming , a small town nestled in the middle of the Wind River Mountains there is no shortage of awe inspiring vistas and breathtakingly beautiful scenery to capture and entice an artist's eye. However, back in the 1980s, there was a shortage of art programs and support for a young Todd Van Fleet, who, even at the age of 8 or 9 knew he wanted to be an artist. But, that shortage did not stop Todd. Nor did that stop his parents from encouraging and supporting him. Whether it was drawing, painting or taking really bad pictures with his dad's old Pentax camera, Todd was driven to express his artistic impulses.

By the time Todd was a teenager, he was satisfying his artistic spirit by taking every elective art class available in his high school. He even appointed himself the sports photographer for the school newspaper. “Because there weren't any classes available, I literally taught myself how to use a 35mm camera on the field and even how to use the darkroom,” he remembers.

Todd was ambitious and serious enough about art that he decided to enter his paintings and drawings in Wyoming's annual State Art Symposium, an event that showcased the best of the state's young art talent. From there he was offered three portfolio scholarships to art schools. He chose the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and moved to Denver in 1994. “Everything was my passion,” he says. Airbrush, drawing, painting in oils, illustration, photography.”

Since getting his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in 1998 Todd has been a freelance artist, creative director and photographer. Today he focuses on his “vintage bicycle portraits” based out of Denver, CO. Todd's work is a direct reflection of his love for everything that he sees a bicycle is; freedom, innovation, ingenuity, simplicity and the wind in your face feeling like a young kid again.

Todd's favorite thing to do is spend time with his wife and two daughters. Quite often they organize cruiser bike rides with their friends and community.

As of October 2009, Todd has been asked to serve as the photo editor for Kickstand Magazine. As you can imagine it is quite the appropriate fit.

As part of The Big Picture, Todd will shoot complimentary headshots of your agency's principals or workspace – allowing you to get to know him and how he works. The trade-off is that if you like his style, you'll use him for upcoming paid work.

To see more of Todd's work, or to contact him about an assignment for The Big Picture, check out his websites here or here.

If you're a photographer who would like to participate in The Big Picture, simply drop us a line and let us know.

In the first incident last March, he was actually tackled by an officer who supposedly was later disciplined.

You can hear that incident in the audio recording he made that demonstrates that although he is an aspiring pilot, he would make one hell of a lawyer.

The assault takes place in the first clip. The second clip captures the aftermath, including a moment when a cop tells Vorus he needs to “stop hiding behind the Constitution.”

In the latest incident earlier this month – which was covered by NBC Washington and might be covered by The Washington Post -  he came across a few cop cars making a traffic stop and snapped a few photos.

A male cop demanded to know what he was doing. He asked if he was being detained. The cop hemmed and hawed and told him no, he was not being detained. That he was free to go.

“As I was walking away, two other units pulled up,” he said in a phone interview with Photography is Not a Crime.

A female officer then stepped out and demanded his identification. He asked again if he was being detained. He also started recording the conversation.

“I notified her that I was only required to provide her with ID if I was suspected of a crime,” he said.

“She said, ‘yes, you’re being detained.’ I said, ‘now that we’ve established I’m being detained, here is my ID,’.”

The officer, who was under the impression that it was illegal to photograph police in public, then checked to see if he had any warrants against him. She also said it was illegal for him to audio record her, which he was doing openly.

Neither is illegal in Washington DC.

Meanwhile, the first cop was telling him that he was free to leave. Both officers were of equal rank.

Vorus asked for a supervisor, which only complicated matters.

“A sergeant arrived and told me I could not take pictures without permission,” he said.

A friend of his then arrived at the scene and tried correcting the officers by informing them that he, in fact, did not need permission to take their photos.

“Then they started asking for her ID,” he said.

But she knew better than to provide her identification.

He was eventually released after almost 30 minutes.

A few days later, Vorus spoke to a Sgt. Mercer at the police department to file a complaint.

“He said those officers were incorrect and that anyone can take pictures on public property,” he said. “He also told me he would speak to the officers to get their side of the story.

“It was Tuesday and he told me to call him back on Wednesday.”

Vorus called back on Thursday and surprise, surprise, the sergeant was no longer so cooperative.

“He now had an attitude. He said the officers told him I was taking pictures of inside the police cars. I told him all the pictures I took are posted on my blog.”

Not that it should have made a difference. As long as he is not physically entering the police cars, he has every right to photograph whatever can be seen from the outside. If the cops don’t like it, let them tint their windows.

The First Incident

Vorus was hoping to take photos of airplanes at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va.

It was March 1st and Vorus contacted the airport’s media relations department to inquire about its photo policy. He spoke to a Tara Hamilton.

We talked about me taking photos at the airport check-in kiosk for the airlines since that was private property leased by the airport, she notified me that I would need to ask their station managers. She also told me that she would notify TSA and Airport Police of my presence.

It wasn’t long before he was approached by Transportation Security Administration officials inquiring about his photography. The first two times, the TSA officials were in uniform. He told them he had permission and they did not push the matter further.

But then he was approached by two men in suits who told him he was not allowed to photograph “TSA checkpoints or TSA personnel.”

“They said they were in law enforcement. I asked them to show me a badge,” he said.

One of the men told him, “we ain’t going to show you shit.”

They eventually pulled out Homeland Security credentials.

Vorus began recording the conversation. He then snapped some photos of the men.

Then he walked away after being informed he wasn’t being detained.

But then one of the Homeland Security officers beckoned a uniformed Metropolitan Washington Airport Police officer who was on a bicycle, telling him him that Vorus was being “combative.”

In cop talk, combative is anytime you question their authority. It’s the equivalent of contempt of cop. The only difference is, the word “combative” written on a police report gives them the justification of beating your head in.

So Vorus got into a discussion with the police officer, whose name turned out to be Corporal King.

I asked him “was I being detained” after 2 minutes of his hostility, and he did not respond. I then asked a couple more times. He stated no, I then asked him was I free to leave he also said no, I then followed up with well then I am being detained.  He asked me for identification. I asked one more time was I being detained. NOTE: “By this point I am extremely frustrated. I was verbally abused by two TSA employees and accosted by an Airport Police Officer.”  Officer King stated that if I did not provide proper Identification, I would need to leave the airport. I decided at this point I would depart from the airport.

As he was walking away, Vorus turned around and snapped a photo of King and another officer who had joined him.

This caused King to become combative, to say the least.

I was told by other officers that I was being detained as a suspicious person. When it was confirmed that I had been detained, relinquished a VA Driver License. I then was told that I would be taken to jail at least for disorderly conduct.

Officers came, examined the images that were stored on my camera’s memory card. I was told to delete the images of TSA personnel and airport personnel. I was released twenty minutes later. I was told that I was being detained for suspicious behavior, but I was never searched.

When I took a picture of Officer King he jumped off of his bicycle and said “your ass ain’t gonna take a picture of me” and tackled me.  I yelled “ that is assault, get off of me”. He grabbed the camera that was around my neck and walked away. The female officer yelled and motioned for me to sit on stairs that were to our left, two more officers came and yelled for me to sit down. One officer had a M-4 assault rifle.

The cops ended up deleting his images, which he was unable to recover, before sending him on his way.

He ended up filing a complaint against King and learned that the officer had “violated departmental policy” and “appropriate action has been taken” but wasn’t told any details, which probably means King was simply told not to tackle anybody when it was obvious he was being recorded.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d: Multimedia Laptop Goes 3D

The 3D laptops keep rolling out. This time from Lenovo, who's outfitted the IdeaPad Y560 notebook with an extra dimension in the Y560d. It's got the same Core i7 goodness, a 15.6-inch (1366×768) display, and starts at $1200. Not shabby!

Of course, you'll have to upgrade if you want that Core i7, ATI Radeon HD5730 1GB graphics, or 750GB hard drive; the starting price sticks you with a still decent Core i3 processor, Intel's not-so-great integrated graphics, and a 250GB hard drive. Even the 3D panel, software, and glasses are extra options, meaning that it's going to quite a bit more to outfit the Y560d for a full 3D multimedia experience.

It also would've been nice to see 3D Blu-ray compatibility and Nvidia Optimus technology for easy graphics switching. While there's not much 3D Blu-ray content to choose from currently, it'd be nice to be a little more future-rpoof.

Still: it's early days for 3D laptops, and everyone's still figuring out what exactly consumers want—including consumers. If it's a relatively affordable 3D multimedia notebook that can be tricked out to the gills, the Y560d might just be onto something.

Lenovo Delivers on the Three D's with its First 3D Laptop; Dynamic, Dazzling and Dramatic

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – June 17, 2010: Lenovo (HKSE: 0992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d, the company's first multimedia laptop with a 3D display. The Y560d features the TriDef® 3D technology solution, which includes a 3D screen, software and glasses 1, so users can experience the unique sensation of visual immersion within their favorite movies, pictures and games.

“Fun is a notebook that brings multimedia to life-and the IdeaPad Y560d does this in a dramatic fashion with a truly unique 3D viewing experience,” said Dion Weisler, vice president, business operations, Lenovo. “While 3D technology has been around for ages, it has not been readily accessible to consumers within the home. Lenovo is helping bridge this gap by delivering consumers a 3D experience on a familiar PC platform that can be viewed and enjoyed when and where they want.”

The 15.6-inch Y560d 3D-enabled multimedia laptop, with its High-Def 16:9 widescreen and polarizer glasses, provides the optimal 3-dimensional experience when combined with compatible 3D movies and games.

With TriDef® 3-D technology, users can also experience 3D on their standard 2D videos and photos. The TriDef Media Player transforms a standard movie into a 3D experience 2. Photos take on a whole new life, thanks to the TriDef Photo Transformer that turns standard photos into eye-popping 3D.

The Y560d laptop includes Lenovo's new innovative Enhanced Experience RapidDrive technology, which seamlessly combines SSD and HDD storage solutions to deliver even faster Windows 7 boot-up times and significantly improve application performance3. Lenovo Enhanced Experience for Windows 7 is a unique Lenovo certification that delivers an optimized boot-up and shutdown process, rich multimedia capabilities and easy system maintenance tools. With RapidDrive technology, users can experience Windows 7 boot up 66% faster4, start favorite applications two-times faster5, and copy files within the computer in less than half the time6. The Y560d can be configured with up to 8GB DDR3 memory and up to 750BG HDD storage so users don't have to worry about running out of hard drive capacity when saving their favorite movies, music and games.

The Y560d will be available with JBL-designed speakers and Dolby® Home Theater™ surround sound – perfect for enjoying music and movies. Powered with up to an Intel Core™ i7 processor featuring Intel Turbo Boost Technology7 for delivering extra GHz when you need it, and the latest high-performance ATI Radeon™ HD5730 1GB graphics card, the Y560d is more than capable of running the latest games. With Switchable Graphics, users can toggle between performance and energy-saving modes for extended battery life. The laptop also includes an optional Blu-ray Disc™ drive, HD graphics support and an HDMI output for connecting to other HD devices such as a TV or gaming console2.

Additional features on the Y560d include SlideNav – an intelligent touch-sensitive slide bar application for easy desktop navigation; OneKey Theater II for optimized video playback; and an Ambient Light Sensor that automatically adjusts the PC screen brightness based on the user's distance from the display. For staying connected while on the move, the Y560d also comes with optional high-speed integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Pricing and Availability8

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d laptop is available by the end of June on Lenovo.com and will start at $1199.99.

Send an email to Brian Barrett, the author of this post, at bbarrett@gizmodo.com.

Lenovo has joined the ranks of other notebook manufacturers with their first 3D laptop offering. The IdeaPad Y560d has a 15.6-inch screen with a special coating from a company called TriDef that works in conjunction with polarized glasses to produce a 3D effect. Unfortunately, 3D Bluray support is a no-go on this laptop, but the TriDef tech should allow 2D films to have a 3D esque effect. Other specs include the choice of Intel Core i3 through Core i7 processors, a HDD/SDD hybrid called the Lenovo RapidDrive, an ATI Radeon HD5720 GPU, and up to 8GB DDR3 RAM.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d is available at the end of the month, starting at $1,200.

Photo Collage
This is a simple and easy gift that will be greatly appreciated by friends and family. It can be a specific theme, or just all about the people you love. I have given photo collages to many of my family and friends. If you frame the photo collage, it can actually make for an interesting piece of pop art.

One of my favorite things to do with photo collages is to focus around a famous quotation. I will search online for quotations that fit the theme I am going for (mothers, family, friends, babies, etc.). Once I pick the perfect quotation, I print it out on a decorative piece of scrapbooking paper. This becomes the center of my collage. The other photos are then arranged around that quotation, and it makes for a fun, personal, and thought provoking work of art.

For a detailed step-by-step guide, read “How to Make a Photo Collage.”

Photo DVD Slideshow
If your computer has a DVD burner, it is likely that you have the software to make a DVD slideshow. Although it is not always highlighted on the packaging, most DVD burning programs allow you to make a slideshow with photos and music, which can be played on any DVD player.

The program I use is called “MyDVD,” but most DVD software programs do have a slideshow feature. To create a slideshow, you will need to pick between 20-40 photos. This is usually the amount of photos that fit within the constraints of a single song. You can also do several slideshows, each with different music.

You can even add a slideshow at the end of a DVD with home movies on it, or vice versa. For my mother-in-law's birthday, we made her a DVD slideshow with tons of family photos. At the very end, we added a video of my husband and our son singing “Happy Birthday.”

This is an especially great gift for family who live out-of-town. It is cheap to ship and a way to keep in touch.

Photo Magnets
Everyone loves magnets! They can be stuck on the refrigerator or dishwasher at home, or for those work in an office, they can be stuck on the filing cabinets for a great way to personalize your office space.

Photo magnets are a fun gift and easy to make. First, you need to decide on the size. You can use a regular 4×6 snapshot or you can use a wallet size photo. The process is similar, but slightly different for each.

For a 4×6 photo-

First, have the photo laminated. You can buy at-home laminating materials, or you can take it to somewhere like Kinkos, where they will do it for you in a machine.

Second, buy magnetic tape that has adhesive on the back. You can cut it into strips to fit the photo. Cut one strip for the top and one strip for the bottom.

Finally, adhere the magnetic strips to the photo, and you have a photo magnet.

For a wallet size-

First, I recommend buying a pack of business card shaped magnets with adhesive backing. These can be purchased at most office supply stores. I recommend Baumgarten's Business Card Magnets, which come in a pack of 25. Next, you can laminate the photo if you would like. It does make for a longer lasting gift, as it will not get smudged. Peel the adhesive paper off of the magnets, and stick it onto the photo, cutting off any excess.

Placemats
This is a great gift for families with small children, as they can easily be wiped clean. Young children also love looking at photos. I recommend making a set of four.

First, buy a colorful poster board and cut it into four rectangles.

Next, cut your photos into fun shapes and glue them to the poster board pieces. You can even embellish with stickers, magazine cutouts, and glitter.

Finally, have the placemats laminated. A copy place like Kinkos will usually do this for relatively cheap.

Digital Scrapbook
If you are not a crafty type, this is probably the perfect photo gift idea for you. Creative Memories offers a free download of a program that allows you to scrapbook digitally. The templates are pre-designed to match whatever themes you download (each theme has to be downloaded separately, but all are free). The templates are arranged by the number of photos you would like to put on a page, and also have boxes for you to type in titles or journaling.

Making a scrapbook using this program can be done relatively quickly, even within an hour. Plus, you do not need to shop for any of the supplies. Once you have finished your scrapbook, they send it to you in the mail.

Visit Creativememories.com for more information.

AMHERST, N.H. — A crowd is expected at a school board meeting to discuss the district's yearbook policy after photos were published of two students charged in a fatal machete attack.

The Souhegan Cooperative School Board is meeting Thursday night in Amherst.

Photos of seniors William Marks and Quinn Glover appeared in the yearbook.

Glover struck a plea bargain with prosecutors in exchange for his cooperation and pleaded guilty to felony charges of robbery, burglary and conspiracy in connection with the October death of Kimberly Cates, of Mont Vernon. Marks has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges.

The husband of Kimberly Cates wrote to school officials saying the decision to publish the photos was disrespectful.

Like any other batteries, Sony VAIO laptop battery holds a complete charge when it is brand new and day by day, it gradually dies. This is normal as any other rechargeable Li-Ion batteries. You may need to understand your battery more therefore you can take a excellent care of it and then make the most out of it.

(1) How much lifetime you possibly can expect from a Sony laptop battery

Most modern laptops use Li-Ion batteries. Generally speaking, a Sony Li-Ion battery pack can hold 300 – 500 charge cycles and if utilized on main power, the battery inside a laptop computer will only last for 12-18 months.

(2)My new laptop computer battery pack can last up to 4 hours but the old one can only hold charge for 40 mins, what causes this?

The Sony notebook battery pack dies over time and until someday, it’ll completely dead. It’s nature for rechargeable batteries.

(3) Should I remove the Sony laptop battery when using the AC adapter?

Detach the battery and keep it in a cool, dry location while you are not going to use it for a long time, lets say roughly 1 month. If you’ll be on AC power for an extended period of time, you’ll be able to prolong your battery’s lifetime by removing it and putting it into prolonged storage.

(4) When choosing a Sony replacement battery, the larger capacity is the better?

If you purchase a new Sony VAIO laptop batteries, you need to examine the voltage and current rating. For instance, a Sony VGP-BPS9 battery for VAIO VGN-AR, VGN-NR, VGN-SZ series is rated at 11.1volts and 4800 milliamp-hours(mAh). The milliamp-hour rating indicates, in theory, that for every hour the cells can produce 4800 milliamps.

(5) Is it ok to purchase a cheap Sony laptop battery?

You’ll find bargains all over the internet. For instance, for a VGP-BPL2 battery, you may find a 3rd-part battery for $49 and a genuine one is $299.99. The price difference is huge and our suggestion is that you might go for a brand new premium brand or shop at a reliable store such as LaptopTraveller.com. You can get an affordable but high quality replacement battery with 1 year warranty.

The Sony DCR-SR47 Hard Disk Drive HandyCam Camcorder title doesn’t even tell you what the device is… it’s a video camera, for those not used to the term ‘HandyCam’. Sony is my favorite manufacturer; no matter what I’ve bought from Sony over the years, it was always well-made and strong.

The hard-drive that it comes with lets you store tons of videos and photographs, and it doesn’t even increase the camera’s size very much. It can fit, easily, into a pocket.

Here are some of the advantages of the Sony DCR-SR47 camcorder:

1. Each of these cameras seem to be offering ever-increasing levels of zoom, and this one doesn’t disappoint. With a 60X zoom, you can’t possibly need that most of the time. If you want to shoot photos of some that’s standing across the street, this is the video camera for you.

2. Also, the quality of the image when your zooming is excellent, which isn’t always the case with video cameras. The ability for the camera to focus on objects that move is excellent, as well.

3. The first thing people do after they buy a digital video camera is they see how it looks on their big LCD screen and an HD image holds up well even when displayed on a large HDTV. The thing to do is look at it very closely, and even when you’re close it seems to be finely focused and of good quality.

4. There’s no way you should ever purchase a video camera without it having a rechargeable feature, which this one has. That means you won’t be throwing batteries away every second, and will be able to charge more than one set if you’re going somewhere that you need hours worth of shots. Since video eats up the power, as well as drive space, you’ll need that ability.

5. The software which is bundled with the camera is easy to use, allowing you to copy what you’ve shot over to the computer with ease. However, you’ll have to use third-party software if you wish to edit videos together into finished pieces with credits and title pages. I was impressed by how good the sound quality was, coming from such a small microphone.

In all fairness, the Sony DCR-SR47 HandyCam isn’t perfect:

1. You might not wish to zoom to its fullest extent, because you’ll notice some larger squares become visible, but if you keep the level down to reasonable levels, it works well. The quality of the lens is quite remarkable, and the image is very stable and doesn’t shake when you’re zooming, as is often the case with other video cameras.

2. As sometimes happens with these small units, the microphone can pick up the sound of the camera as it zooms when it’s recording, although it’s a directional mike.

When you’ve considered all the things this Sony DCR-SR47 Hard Disk Drive HandyCam Camcorder can do, at its price it’s a good video camera that doesn’t cost much. That it has a harddisk, for lots of storage is good and it’s small, as well.

If you might be|you may be|you could be|there's a chance you're|you will be|will probably be} looking for some superior best top quality outcomes within movie tape information format, next the Digital 8 camcorder engineering from Sony is some factor that may support your trigger. The Digital eight camcorder engineering was launched by Sony in 1999.

The Digital eight data format was presented just as one development for the usually prevalent Hi8, merging it using the DV format. Because the name recommends, the Digital 8 camcorder finishes the changeover of video tape from analog to digital, one particular point began out utilizing the start of Hi8 information format earlier.

As might be thought feasible, the Digital 8 camcorders can give you considerably significantly far better picture and audio top good quality because of the digital DV encoding to the tape. In truth, though many people get miniDV as being a outstanding excellent data format, but there's not no difference whatsoever within the best good quality of both the types.

Given that Sony could possibly be the primary innovator inside Digital eight technologies, it is possible to always come across a Sony Digital Eight camcorder offered for sale about the ether. One of the most common Digital8 camcorder products from your designer, the DCR-TCR280, the DCR-TCR480, the DCR-TRV250 and also the DCR-TRV340 are common.

They are desirable versions, which not only permit you each of the functions and benefits of the digital camcorder, and also permit that you take pleasure in extra manage in your recordings with functions like digital picture stabilization.

It's possible to examine and comparing the rates within the Sony Digital 8 camcorder you are thinking about on several websites. Furthermore, given that these Digital eight camcorder versions are all-around for pretty a when now, or possibly not be tough whatsoever to discover their testimonials over the internet.

A Product Review of the 14.1″ Sony VAIO VGN-CR420E/N Laptop

Toshiba RP-12 by TRANSISTOR RADIOS

{Photos noir et blanc

The most popular price range for laptops is currently the $700-800 range. This Toshiba Satellite sits firmly within that range and is one of their top selling models. I have gotten my hands on one and I'm going to let you know what you can expect, as well as who can get the most out of owning one of these notebooks. First I'm going to start with the basics.

Hardware:

Imaging: Integrated Webcam

Display: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550

Storage: 200GB

RAM: 2 GB RAM (expandable to 4GB)

Optical Drive: CD R / RW burner with integrated DVD +/- R RW dual layer burner

Graphics Accelerator: Integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics (using up to 256mgs of shared RAM)

Operating on: Windows Vista Home Premium

Dimensions: 14.3″ x 10.5″ x 1.55″

Weight: 6lbs

At first glance this Toshiba is a little larger than I would like weighing in at 6lbs and being over an inch and a half thick when closed up. Once you open it up you notice that the screen really is fairly nice for this price range. Toshiba does a great job on their screens and this one has a nice gloss and a resolution you could compared to something like a 720p television. Though this isn't what you would refer to as an entertainment PC it does have a spacious hard drive. The graphics card isn't great and uses the system's ram as its memory which strains the system's limited resources. The 1.83 Intel is also a little underpowered. It is a decent mobile device because it gets good mileage out of the battery; it is just a little bulky.

Toshiba has a good deal of trial ware preinstalled on this notebook so the first thing I would recommend doing if you have made the purchase would be to remove most of it. A great deal of it starts up and runs in the background when you boot up the PC. You can see them down on the system bar, there are so many it doesn't even display them all. It isn't quite as bad with Toshiba as it is with some manufacturers (cough cough … Sony).

Connectivity:

Integrated Wireless

1 Ethernet port

4 2.0 USB ports (gold standard PC input, use these to connect to your digital camera, printer or whatever)

1 FireWire port (for high speed data transfer between another PC or your digital camcorder)

1 VGA output (to connect to a standard PC monitor)

1 S-Video output (can connect to compatible TV's or to a projector)

1 audio out / 1 microphone in

ExpressCard slot

The connectivity is standard although mine doesn't have Bluetooth bundled. This is something that I would've expected even at this price point. It isn't a big deal because you can always buy a separate dongle but it is a little disappointing. I do like seeing that there is 4 not just 3 USB ports. Otherwise everything is standard and what I like to see. Currently priced at $769 it is a little high for my tastes. I would like to see it closer to $699 before I would pull the trigger. In the end it will please about any typical notebook user.

A Product Review of the 14.1″ Sony VAIO VGN-CR420E/N Laptop

Acer laptop 2556 by dontvail

{Cerstvé obrázky – práve nafotené.

Sony's Vaio is one of the most popular notebook product lines on the market. It may be the sexy sleek look that Sony gives all their Vaios or their renowned service and good name. Either way these Vaio's are flying of the shelf and I'm lucky to have my hands on the VGN-CR390E/B 14.1″ laptop. I'm going to let you know how this sleek black notebook performs and who is going to enjoy this product the most. First let me get started with the basics.

Hardware:

Display: 14.1-inch screen

Imaging: Integrated Webcam

Processor: 2.0 Intel Core 2 Duo

Storage: 250 GB hard drive

RAM: 2 GB RAM (expandable up to a 4 GB maximum)

Optical dive: CD R/RW with and integrated DVD +/- R RW burner

Graphics Card: Integrated Intel GMA X3100 (which dips into shared system resources)

Dimensions: 13.2″ x 9.8″ x 1.67″

Weight: 5.5 pounds.

Included: biometric fingerprint reader

I love the mobility. It is under 6lbs and that is my cutoff for 14″ notebooks. Its battery life is decent as well coming in between 2 or 4 hours depending on how you're using it. I would be on the number being closer to 2 hours, because that is with wireless internet and Bluetooth activated. If you're on a plane or something just watching DVD's and you disable the wireless, you might get closer to 3.

The processor is strong and the hard drive is large. I would like to see a little more Ram for the cost of this notebook. This is especially true since the integrated video card uses system resources. I could do without the biometric reader, I don't know anyone that uses theirs and it wastes resources, drives up costs and adds weight. That is a lot for a gimmick.

Everything else is great. You of course get the clear crisp beautifully XBRITE glossy Sony screen that these Vaios are renowned for. You can compare the clarity to something like one of their 720p Bravias.

Connectivity:

Integrated Bluetooth

Integrated WiFi

3 2.0 USB ports (industry standard connections to be used for printer, digital cameras, or MP3 players)

1 FireWire (for fast data transfer from PC to PC or from your digital camcorder)

1 Ethernet port

ExpressCard slot

Memory Stick and SD card readers

1 VGA output (to be used with standard PC monitors)

1 S-Video output (typically used with projectors, can be used with some compatible televisions)

I like the connectivity, they haven't left anything out. As a bonus I would like to see some sort of HD output but I guess it isn't something I could expect at this price point or with this weak graphics card. This would be a great choice for the student, business professional or an around the house notebook. It won't become the backbone of your entertainment center, but it has enough power to give you plenty of fun. It will play most games but not necessarily with the graphics cranked all the way up. At $1179 it is probably an OK deal. Sony doesn't drop their prices too much, so I guess there would be no real use waiting around on this one, I don't see it going on sale anytime soon truthfully.

LG has a new ultrathin netbook / laptop for us and what better place than CES 2010 in Las Vegas to make it official? It’s a 11.6-inch machine which explains my problem. I don’t know if it should be included in the netbook or the laptop category. But after all, netbooks are simply smaller laptops so I wouldn’t be wrong no matter what I’d call it!

The LG X300 is an ultra-portable computer which only weighs 970g and measures 17.6mm in thickness. Well, sure, it’s not thinner than Adamo XPS from Dell but it’s almost there.

The laptop will offer you a 11.6-inch LCD display, a unique “reflective” keyboard and a borderless touchpad which features hidden lighting and tactile feedback. Inside that supple case you’ll find a 2.0GHz Intel Menlow platform based on Intel’s Atom Z550 chip, 2GB of RAM and a SSD ready to store your precious data. A simple 2-cell battery will last up to seven hours which is quite remarkable. Other features include Bluetooth connectivity, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, SRS TruSurround HD sound and a built-in 3G modem chipset.

Besides being ultra-slim and ultra-portable the laptop is also fanless which means it’s ready to go with you everywhere without disturbing the ones around you. Maybe James Bond could use one as it should fit very well in his next smart car that he’s going to destroy.

LG has added the Smart Pack to the X300 which is said to be the “smartest software suite for notebook and mobile PC users.” The Smart POP functionality will help you synchronize your smartphone with your PC over Bluetooth which means you’ll be able to read and reply to SMS messages straight from the computer without even touching the handset.

The X300 will be available worldwide starting with February, but we have no pricing details for you at this time. What do you say? Would you pick the LG X300 over any existing netbook?

A wedding is the first most memorable event in a couple's life. It's the joining of the partnership. To share your wedding experience with photo wedding announcements is a great idea. You are sharing the celebration of your love. This way you can send an announcement to those who couldn't participate in the wedding as well as sending an announcement as a souvenir of your guests' participation in the celebration. Everyone will appreciate the sentiment.

A list of websites for photo wedding announcements include: Classy Announcements, Shutterfly, and Fun Foto Invitations. These websites also do photo wedding invitations. Don't forget bridal shower invitations, birth announcements, baby shower invitations, and all these can be with or without personalized photos.

Hopefully, you will only be married once and it will be a moment you will want to remember forever. It will also be a moment you will want to share. The possibilities are endless. Vista Print does announcements for 40 cents each. You have to order in groups of 10 but that is extremely reasonable when you are comparing prices. Vista Print not only does photo wedding announcements but they also accommodate almost every printing need. They also have wedding announcements without the photo and announcements and invitations both ways for wedding, bridal showers, birth announcements, and baby shower invitations. Photo Affections has wedding announcements for as low as $1.39. This website is hosting a sale right now. You put your wedding information in to the appropriate boxes and add your favorite photo and in two days you can view your proof. For 20 cents extra they will imprint your return address. This was the most inexpensive yet professional looking announcements website I found for photo wedding announcements.

You can also make your own photo wedding announcements if you're savvy with your computer. This is a great idea because it's so much more personalized and it shows your creativity. This is also a wonderful idea because you can personalize the ones you want to go to whom. If you had guests there that were in the pictures a nice touch would be to send them a wedding announcement with your picture as the main attraction and a picture of them participating in the wedding. Sometimes we forget the things we did. Photos are a great way to remember and your personalization will be greatly appreciated. The day was still about you but it's good to share the memories.

do you really need one? The short answer is yes. The long answer is….

A reflector, as the name implies, is something that reflects light. In photography, is it usually a big sheet of something white, silver or gold, that bounces light at your subject (or at anything you want light on for that matter).

If you are not to particular about having your reflector look all nice and nifty are plenty of DIY options here, and basically any flat surface will do. Foam boards, bed sheets, aluminum covered plywood, did I say any big surface yet?

What Can I do With a Reflector?

While a reflector does not solve all the problems known to mankind, it is a versatile tool that can assist both in the studio and on location. At occasions it is easier to deal with a reflector than with an additional light source, especially if you wanna go guerrilla.

Reflectors are great as they “travel light” and need no power.

Dueling With The Sun

In this picture, we had harsh sun backlight. A golden reflector came in to the rescue for filling face shadows. This is a scenario where adding an extra light source can be kind of tricky, and a situation where a reflector shines (no pan intended).

The light coming from a reflector usually relates to the light source it reflects. This means that you usually have enough “power” bouncing off of it. No power tweaking is needed.

Reducing Shadows In A One-Light-Source Scenario

If you only have one light, a reflector can serve as a fill. And it takes on some of the qualities of an additional light source. By bouncing the flash back at your subject. In this case the light source is a big square softbox, and the reflector is a 5 in one disc with the white cover. This creates a nice diffused fill.

When we were doing the lighting modifiers cheat sheet we actually took each image twice, with a single light source and then with a huge foam board reflector. Here is a little comparison chart.

Reflector Qualities

Size: As with any light source the size of the reflector in relations to the subject will be a significant contributor to the light quality. As a generalization, you can say, that the bigger the reflector, the softer the light it produces.

Color: The color of the reflector will impact two light attributes: light color and light softness. Lets starts with color, since it is the more trivial one. A white reflector will have almost no impact on the light. What goes in, bounces off and comes out. A gold reflector will warm up your tones, while a silver reflector will cool them down. There is a cheat sheet that shows all that stuff here.

Surprisingly the color will also have an impact on how hard or soft the light is. Light bouncing of a white reflector will behave as if the reflector is a second light source the size of the reflector (let's say it is a very shiny white for the sake of simplicity). This is because the light bounces in a very diffused way.

It may seem counter intuitive, but light bouncing of silver or golden reflectors will be harder. This is because the light behaves more like it is reflecting in a mirror. There is a very good explanation for this in Light: Science and Magic (a must read for any light oriented photographer).

Shape: this is the last of the factors that contributes to the quality of the light. some of the reflectors can be bent to focus or diffuse the light. This can help if you want to narrow or widen the light coming off the reflector. While this is possible with some of the reflectors, it is impossible to do with a foam board.

When Reflectors Are Not The Optimal Solution

This may sound trivial, but I thought it is worth mentioning, reflectors can only reflect, they are useless as a single light source.

Reflectors are also not very good when it comes to controlling spill. You can not mount a snoot or a grid on a reflector. and while you can opt for smaller and smaller reflectors, it is really easier to use a flash or strobe covered with snoot or grid.

Where Can I Get One And How Much Do They Cost?

The good news is that you probably already own a reflector. A white T can serve as a reflector, and so will a pillow cover or a white bed sheet, assuming you have a way to stretch and stabilize them. Cost here (assuming you have one of those items @home) is 0.

Next in line is the foam board. A foam boar is basically a sheet of foam trapped between two sheets of paper. That gives the foam some sturdiness, and it feels kinda like plywood only weighs very little. You can get those pretty much any size you want. and they are very cheap. On the negative side is that they don't bend or roll for storage and travel.

Foam boards can also be coated with aluminum foil to create a 2-in-1 silver/white reflector.

If you have a car, you are probably familiar with the Sun shield. They come in both foldable and collapsible forms and are usually silver reflective. If you take the foldable type, make sure you get the bubbly kind. it will help reflect the light in a more diffused pattern.

For the “store bought”-unmodded equipment there is the standard 5-in-1 reflector (which along with foam boards is my favorite reflector). It is a collapsible disc with a coat. The coat has 5 colors: white, black, silver, translucent (which is more a diffuser) and gold. Those will cover any reflecting need and can easily be carried in a bag. This is one of my favorite items in the bag and I use it a lot on sunny days.

At the high end there is the California sun bounce line of products. Those are used by pros and “high end amateurs”. They cost a nice arm and a leg but are very sturdy and fold really nice. I have never used one of those before. So I can only tell from the experience of others. If the price tag is too high for you, you can try a DIY version instead.

A self-portrait by British photographer Brian Duffy, 1968. (Photo by Duffy/Getty Images)

It’s with much sadness that we received news yesterday that photographer Brian Duffy (1933-2010) has died. Although unwell for some time his passing was nonetheless unexpected, and comes just as his body of work was beginning to enjoy a re-appraisal and return to the spotlight it deserves.  There is much that can be written about Duffy: how he helped shape our image of swinging London in the 60’s, how along with David Bailey and Terence Donovan he trail blazed and helped change the face of magazine photography, and there will be rightly much talk of that in the obits.

On a personal note, over the last 18 months  I was lucky enough to have worked with Duffy’s archive, and had the opportunity to edit work that hasn’t seen the light of day for decades. Uncovering shoots with the movers and shakers of  London in it’s swinging heyday was quite simply the picture editors holy grail.

I met Duffy for the first time at our London gallery when he came in to see if he ‘could do business’ with Getty Images. Thankfully it turned out he could, but not before he gave me the grilling of a lifetime in which time his conversation turned from photographing horse droppings  (in not so many words) to why he never got punched using a Rolleiflex. And going through his negs in the subsequent weeks and months (those negs which survived the burning his archives in 1979) to me they spoke volumes about the man; artful, difficult, baffling, irreverent,  insightful,  charming and quite unique. The sad loss of a true great indeed.

Take a look back at the man himself and the incredible imagery he created.

This came out of nowhere and is very intriguing. A video camera by Panasonic that takes the chip from the GH1, sticks it in a video camera body and properly optimises it for video! The press release states it give dof similar to that of a 35mm movie camera. Not quite as the sensor is a bit smaller but not too far of. This development is very intriguing. Bit of a low bitrate though it seems but that is down to AVCHD. Price rumours are around $6000. For a video camera to come out with a sensor as big as this for the pice is astonishing, because as we know size is important (despite what my exes always said to me!)

WIth this camera coming out it mean the other manufacturers need to do the same soon to keep up . Especially as this camera offers uncompressed HD-SDI and HDMI out which is HUGE! So what it records AVCHD? With the uncompressed out plug in your nano flash or Ki-Pro and you are away!!!

I tell you something. I want one!

Here is the press release:

* Premier AVCCAM Video Camera Combines 4/3” Sensor with Superior Video Quality, Professional Audio Inputs, Variable Frame Rates, SDXC Card Technology *

LAS VEGAS, NV (April 11, 2010) – Panasonic Solutions Company today announced a game-changing AVCCAM HD camcorder, the AG-AF100, the first professional micro 4/3-inch video camcorder optimized for high-definition video recording. PLAYBOY Magazine has announced that it is cancelling its proposed photo spread “The Girls of the Intifada” that was to feature naked Palestinian lovelies from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The Los Angeles chapter of the B'nai B'rith had denounced the feature, saying that it justified terrorism and hate. The B'nai B'rith was tipped off about the feature by a PLAYBOY insider, who leaked a piece of doggerel that was going to be used to illustrate the photo spread:

We are the girls of the Intifada!
To all Jews we're definitely nada!
We'll yield not an inch of land
But there's one catch –
Only selfless Muslim martyrs
Shall colonize our snatch!

PLAYBOY editor-in-chief Philboyd Studge denied that the venerable magazine, which debuted in 1954 with a nude Marilyn Monroe as its “Sweetheart of the Month,” had any intention of making light of the tense situation in Israel with light-hearted verse.

“The reports that we intended to caption the photos with patently offensive, nay, anti-Semitic poetry are nonsense,” Studge said.

Hugh Hefner, the founder and nominal publisher of PLAYBOY, was unavailable for comment. His daughter, Christie Hefner, the president of Playboy Enterprises, issued a terse statement saying that she supported Studge and was sorry for any aspirations against Israel the feature might have caused. No criticism of Israel was intended.

Studge said that PLAYBOY never intended to entitle a proposed spread of girls from the Middle East as representing the Intifada. He believes that an internal trickster was responsible for the rumors.

“I tell you, it's not even decent doggerel, let alone poetry,” an irritated Studge complained. “The metonymy, is so meretricious…. How could anyone believe it was authentic PLAYBOY doggerel, ferkrissakes!”

Studge had been an editor at the New Yorker, were her oversaw the stories of a stable of writers including John Cheever, E.L. Doctorow and Kurt Vonnegut. He also briefly worked as an editor at Doubleday, where he was exhausted by epic editing sessions of William Safire's BrobdingnagianCivil War-themed historical novel Freedom. His exhaustion drove him back into the magazine biz.

Tapped as the fiction editor at PLAYBOY in the late '80s, Studge eventually was named editor-in-chief in 1999. Hired originally hired to bring “class” to a magazine more synonymous, during the Reagan Era, with ass, Studge has toiled to reclaim the cultural cache PLAYBOY Magazine had enjoyed in the 1960s, which it squandered a decade later, as part of the fallout from the mid-'70s Pubic Wars (not to be confused with the 17th Century “Beaver Wars” Century).

An anonymous source at the Playboy Building in Chicago said that Hugh Hefner's attempts to mediate the dust-up carried little water. The basic thrust of Hefner's attempt at negotiation, an offer to run a countervailing “Girls of the B'nai B'rith” was rejected out of hand as “preposterous.”

“Do you think the defamed want to be further defamed by the defamer,” the source said, characterizing the attitude of the Anti-Defamation League official who handled the imbroglio.

The Playboy Philosophy & The Western World

Liz Smith was the latest to address the controversy. A friend of Hugh Hefner's, she asked his opinion of the Middle Eastern situation during a general discussion of the publisher's own Playboy Philosophy in its sixth decade. It's Hefner's contention that his philosophy changed America, and thus the Western World. As he seeks new markets for PLAYBOY and its offshoots, the online Web Site and its cable programming, he has become a proselytizer for the worldwide benefits of the Playboy Philosophy loosening up the tigher-assed corners of the world.

Smith was careful to avoid any mention of the “Girls of the Intifada” ruckus, but the issue definite was addressed. Hef blamed the problems in the Middle East squarely on religion.

“One of the problems with organized religion is that it has always kept women in a second-class position,” the PLAYBOY publisher said. “They have been viewed as the daughters of Eve.”

Speaking as to how the puritanical Muslim countries have put into effect extraordinary means to control their sexuality of their women, Hefner said that they must realize that, “Sex is the driving force on the planet. We should embrace it, not see it as the enemy.

As for the rift between the Muslims and the Jews, he contends, “We're separated by our myths.”

Did Hef think he was going to heaven or hell when he died, seeing as that for the past 50-odd years, he has lived in his own version of heaven-on-earth.

“I've always felt I was on the side of the angels,” he concluded.

Even political opponents who have spend the better part of the last year and a half slamming Ritter for regulating the industry have suddenly warmed up to the idea of regulations on drilling.

Jared Polis: Polis has shown leadership in Washington this week, helping to broker a compromise deal on the repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell law. Additionally, he continues to endear himself to his constituency by publicly backing the medical marijuana community. This week, he wrote a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urging him to prevent banks from discriminating against medical marijuana dispensaries

Kyle Orton: Calls for the Broncos to trade last year's starting quarterback seemingly began as soon as the team drafted Tim Tebow in the first round of April's draft. It would have been easy for Orton to respond with indignation, but Orton has proved the consummate pro. The veteran has said all the right things at the Broncos' passing camp over the last two weeks, and continues to be entrenched as the team's starting QB. Time will tell whether that's a win for Orton, but his no-drama approach in the wake of some controversial front-office moves must be refreshing for Broncos fans.
