Game Review: Foto Showdown

July 13th, 2010 by submjgrainger

I made some shots in the last days – please tell me your thoughts:

Spiral staircase, Rothenburg ob der Tauben by jprowland

San Simeon, California, well known as home of Hearst Castle, has more going for it than just as a one-stop layover to see the monumental residence of an American publishing icon.

From a base-camp at the Orchid Inn just off California 1, anyone with no more than a point-and-shoot camera and an average eye for scenery can capture world class images in just one day roaming the 30-mile scenic-rich stretch of the golden state's Central Coast.

Head south for breakfast or brunch along Morro Bay's wharf, but don't let the often persistent morning overcast daunt you. With photogenic fame that rivals Hearst Castle, Morro Rock looms over the harbor area and a cap of mist, cloud or fog adds visual drama as a massive background to colorful fishing boats, kayakers and the ever-present seabirds that make the estuary their home. Tides and other factors govern the departure and arrivals of the fishermen, so check around to see when the wharf shows the most activity. On weekends and in the summer months, tourists flood the area, possibly dominating your foreground. A small inconvenience for great seaside pictures of marine life and activity.

After brunch at any of several restaurants in the marina area, drive north along California 1 to the little town of Harmony, population 18. The pottery shop and a nearby winery maintain regular hours but a restaurant behind the post office can be hit or miss. Whether you stop to shop, sip wine or eat, check out the interplay of light and shadows on the various doors and windows of the three main buildings in Harmony: the old creamery's loading dock, the chapel at the rear and a commercial building across the little main street in the town. A vintage and long unused truck contrasts with a sign proclaiming some of the things people used to do in the sparsely populated town where William Randolph Hearst stopped en route to San Simeon for dairy products.

Cambria, artistic and commercial nerve-center for the area, has a world-class collection of restaurants, galleries and other shops that represent great focal points for pictures of the family browsing and interacting with local merchants. Cambria affords a wealth of opportunities for you to take the traditional point and click photo of the family or friends. Linger in the town as long as you want, but save time for sunset shots along the coast at any of several turnouts along the Cabrillo Highway.

What would a seaside picture be without a lighthouse? The old lighthouse at Peidras Blancas sits 15 miles north of San Simeon on a rugged point that juts into the ocean. Authorities limit access to many working lighthouses along the California coast and if seeing the inner workings of these venerable sentinels captivates you, better structures exist elsewhere. Besides, parts of the original cab from the Piedras Blancas lighthouse sit on prominent display in Cambria, which gives you perhaps a closer look at how engineers designed the light element and its relationship to the Fresnel lens, the two features that create and throw light far out to sea.

But the jagged coast and rocks between the lighthouse and a wide turnout provide you with more than a staging area for sunset shots. Throughout the year, the sun sets either to the right or left of the lighthouse. Weather often rolls in over the top of Piedras Blancas to present you with dramatic sky effects as the sun lowers in and out of late afternoon and early evening clouds and fog banks.

Wildlife lovers know that in late winter sea lions use the many coves and inlets as a spawning ground. Be careful, however. Sea lion bulls, though very large and lumbering move with deceptive speed when angered. Sea otters and harbor seals also live along this stretch of California coast; and at the same during the same season when sea lions mate, whales often transit close to shore in their annual migrations south to calving waters off Mexico before returning north later in the spring. To catch views of migrating whales, you'll need either a long lens on your camera or take one of the charter whale watching excursions out of Morro Bay.

Along California 46, a well-traveled highway that stretches from the coast inland to Paso Robles, you can spot hawks, turkey vultures and other raptors that ride thermals in search of prey. About three miles inland and near where the road crosses over the summit, you'll find two broad turnouts. From either of these parking areas, look south toward Morro Rock and wait for the sun to get low on the horizon for perhaps the most dramatic panoramic shot you'll take on your one-day photo odyssey. With the camera set for telephoto, you can squeeze family, friends or even yourself into the frame along with the far distant but still visible Morro Rock, a wide swath of coast and even a few of the golden hills that give California its distinctive second name, “The Golden State”.

To round off your photo tour of the Central Coast, take in any of the several wineries that flank California 46 as you approach Paso Robles. The late afternoon sun and always scenic vineyards, not to mention the opportunity to taste wines from some of the up-and-coming wineries in the region, give you a good chance to change your focus from panoramas to local color that includes architecturally unique homes and commercial buildings.

This post is number six of twenty one subjects that will help you focus when on your next journey and you wish to bring back a well rounded story of where you were.  If you’re just going on vacation and only want pictures of yourself by the pool sipping boat drinks, then you can probably skip this one.  These posts are not intent on telling you everything you need to do, step by step, to capture perfect, cookie-cutter pictures while traveling.  Instead, they are intent on pointing out some vital elements to capture when on the road and ask thought provoking questions you may want to ask yourself.  My hope is they help guide you to find your own means to better expressing what your travels have meant to you and present that in the best light possible.

How people socialize from region to region often seems something of a shock to the unsuspecting traveler, even in their own home country.  City to city, the changes are less obvious.  Block to block, they can be barely perceptible.  But they are there.  Humans are a social species and any time two or more of us get together there are behaviors and patterns, ways of communicating, ways of conveying thoughts and feelings about what’s important to each.

In broad terms, from a photographic standpoint when traveling, I take socializing to be any interactions that aren’t strictly business (even though business transactions often involve various types of socializing).  And typically the types of interactions where people are trying to learning something from each other, unlike sports and other competitions.  It’s the way cabbies waiting for a fare will stand around and chat.  It’s the way police talk with vagrants in a park before moving them along.  And kids at a movie theater yelling to friends or playing video games.

To really get a feel for socializing when traveling, it’s best to spend a day with no camera.  Walk around and maybe see some of the tourist areas, but also spend time seated in a park away from the popular sites (we’ll have a post later that talks about hitting those ‘must see’ sites, but for now, leave them be).  Go to a local cafe and just people watch.  For some of us, this is one of the thrills of travel but for some, it’s a stretch to just sit and watch.  But it’s important.  Without a camera to grab, you’re more forced to witness, to see how others interact.

Do people mainly keep to themselves or is there a lot of interaction?  Do young people talk to old people and do they do it different than when they talk to those in their own age group?  Where do people tend to gather?  Can you spot old friends and how they interact?  And discern that from new acquaintances?  Is there much physical contact during a conversation or are people more reserved?  Loud or hushed?  Smiles or serious?

Spending a day observing before grabbing your camera will answer these questions and more.  If you can’t spend a whole day, maybe just an hour will do.  It’ll give you a better idea of who the strangers are around you.  Spending this day without a camera may also have another benefit. I’ve found people are often more likely to chat with you if you don’t have a camera.  You may then learn more about how locals socialize with tourists.  You may also make a friend who can lead you to other insights about the area you are visiting.  And they’ll probably be ok with you taking their picture the next time you meet.

You say you aren’t traveling and have no photo to share in the comments section below? I say take a look at how those around you in your home town socialize and try photographing that first.  Practice at home will sharpen your skill when you’re faced with a foreign country and culture.  And by all means, please share any shots you have of what socializing means to you in the comment section.

Bug and Bean Photography: shots from the BB picnic

I was thrilled when talented San Francisco family and lifestyle photographer Nancy Nguyen-Wong of Bug And Bean Photography asked if she could set up a photo station at the Boing Boing picnic! She's posted some selects from the picnic on her blog, including a sample of the portraits and also candid shots. If you're in the Bay Area and want a pro photo of your family or child, I couldn't recommend Nancy enough. She's really fun to be around and somehow manages to get the perfect shot while you're busy chatting or, depending on your age, babbling away. Bug and Bean Photography: BB Picnic

@bennytonbunny15 Benny, I use both the Mac OS and the Windows Server platform extensively. It’s driven by the software that I want to run. I take that attitude that we don’t have to worry about Steve Jobs or Bill Gates’ wallets — they are both doing just fine! Hope you got a few laughs. I did put my money where my mouth is, and I bought this 13″ laptop, which we now refer to as the “MacBook Amateur”, as it has evolved to the entry level MacBook Pro, less the FireWire!

@adiblasi In my MacBook Pro, the internals ROCK! I have the 2.66 Ghz Intel i7 and a load of upgrades, the only drawback is that it gets extremely hot and I don’t want to put it onto my lap directly (I use a lapdesk). The processor goes 80+ degrees Celsius- the temperature above boiling water and the temp. most computers overheat and shut down.

@Jacob96159 Hi Jacob; I’ve had my fair share of Apple hardware problems; and yes, you are correct, internals are crap, just like ‘everything else’ with the components being made in China; I like the Apple systems for the software, specifically for video and audio editing; PC’s all the way for my businesses; I did put my money where my mouth is, and I bought the laptop in the semi of a joke review here. Still don’t know why this video has over 180K views. Sheesh. Thanks for watching. – Alfred

Yeah? why does apple package the macbook pro with a faulty 8600 GPU. I have a small claims case against apple at the moment because they don’t want to replace a video card that was recalled by the 100,000s, that failed on 2 of my units in less than a year. sold one broken for 900 dollars, and bought a pc with windows 7 and twice the ram lol.

So, um, where is the review? Seriously, this isn’t a review. Its more like a parody. You just touched the case of the laptop and zoomed in on the metal edge parts, then talked about that for 10 fucking minutes total.

This so called “review” gave me no information AT ALL about the actual computer. Only some random bullshit about what it looks like and what visual types I can get. Before calling you a reviewer or your videos review I would recommend reviewing your own review-style.

The software is really the only difference. I would say that the Apple computer instead of a Windows-based computers to use it a lot easier.

The main difference is the operating system. Apple OSX Leopard running on an OS stable and enjoyable PC, if your new purchase will work on Vista. Another difference is the design, the apples are very good to have smooth lines and good. PCs are cheaper, more parts for them easily accessible and there is a ton of help Auswahl.Hope

After making the decision to schedule your boudoir photography session it's time to start preparing. Here are a few tips to ensure you get the best boudoir portraits.

1. Makeup

It is strongly recommended to hire a professional makeup artist. It will add to the overall cost of the boudoir portraits but will be well worth it in the long run. You may find that some boudoir photographers include a professional makeup artist in your boudoir package. And others photographers will be able refer you to a makeup artist.

Remember to allow at least 30 – 45 minutes if you're having your make up applied or an hour and a half if you are having your hair styled as well.

If you choose to do your makeup yourself here are a couple of pointers:

- Eye makeup and blush should be fairly heavily applied. Try and be neat and precise. Boudoir photography tends to be unforgiving.
- Don't use frosted lipstick! It appears too light in photographs.
- Keep eye shadow a shade lighter than normal to accentuate your eyes.
- Lipstick should be at least a shade deeper, particularly if you have dark hair or are going to wear dark clothing.
- Use powder based make-up to maintain a matte finish on your skin.

Clothing and Props

Boudoir, or erotic photography, is often associated with nudity or lingerie. As a matter of fact, a lot of men find their wives dressed as it's also known in their gear to be more attractive than dressing in lingerie. Naturally you should to stick with something you are comfortable with.

The choice of props and clothing for your boudoir portraits are literally endless. Some interesting possibilities are:

His favorite sports team jersey, some tools of his trade, his uniform or a favorite button down shirt. Or maybe something a little more classy like a slinky cocktail dress, a fur coat, a blouse, gloves and hats and of course the old favorites stockings and high heels.

Perhaps sexy choices like a bodystocking, colorful panties and bra, boy shorts, way too tight cut-offs – actually anything tight and anything transparent! If you have any tasteful photographic nudes you want to copy, bring the photos along. Non traditional items are also very effective for boudoir photography.

Some goodies are a bath robe or towel, tight shorts, biker shorts, tight or short tank tops, tees with rips or holes, anything leather, scarves, mini skirts, your slumming at home outfit, boxer shorts, the tools of your trade, workout outfit, cowboy boots and hat, and anything he has given you.

Some great ideas for boudoir portrait props include most home or romantic items, flowers, sun glasses, scarves, beads, wine glasses or teddy bears. Try and consider your choice of these items from his perspective. This is a gift for him after all. Don't be afraid to be daring and creative.

When thinking boudoir, don't forget about the details, check for labels on new items and look out for tears or holes, unless you want them there, of course!

Boudoir photography takes a bit of planning and time. So consider these other tips for your big day.

Relax.

Have something light to eat before the shoot and try and have a bottle of water or juice handy. If you feel a little nervous, ask your sister or girlfriend to sit in with you. You could even split the session with them!

Manage your time.

There is nothing that ruins the atmosphere of boudoir photography quicker than being stressed. Leave yourself enough time to have your hair and makeup done and to get home in good time to complete any last minute errands.

Try to wear loose fitting clothes that don't leave marks.

These take awhile to clear and can waste valuable time. Button up shirts will leave your makeup and hair intact and clear deodorants allow for a larger range of the poses that make for great boudoir portraits.

For His Eyes Only

Taking boudoir portraits is a great gift for the man in your life, it's for his eyes only. And just remember, boudoir photography is erotic, glamor, and naughty all rolled up into one…have fun!

RALEIGH, N.C.

Online critics have challenged the rarity of a photo found in a North Carolina attic that some experts say depicts two children who were born into slavery.

The buyer and an art historian still attest that the photo is rare and was taken in the early 1860s.

However, since an Associated Press story was published last week about the photo, critics have located other similar images of the two children in ragged clothes on eBay and at a digital archive of the New York Public Library.

The collector purchased the photo and a slave document he linked to the sale of one of the boys in the picture for a combined $50,000. He says that his photo is a rare original artifact and all the rest are duplicates.

The Top Gadgets Announced at CES 2010

Technology always captivates consumers. Some of the best gadgets and technological advancements are introduced each year in the International CES in Vegas, really addressing new meaning in pioneer and intelligent devices.

The best gadgets announced at CES 2010, according to experts and consumer reviews, are the following:

a) Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid

Featuring fascinating notebooks with IdeaPad U1 Hybrid on the lead, Lenovo has really made a striking impression at this year's CES. Being the first PC in the industry that allows users to remove the screen and switch to a six-screen multitouch tablet that functions independently with its own processor and operating system, the IdeaPad U1 integrates Lenovo's Hybrid Switch technology allowing both PCs to function perfectly on the two processors effortlessly.

Featuring textured surface on the inside and a sleek, transparent dark red cover that cannot but capture the consumer's eye, the shiny round notebook comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM processor in tablet mode, 11.6″ HD LED display, 4GB of memory RAM and 160GB storage capacity on the SSD running on Windows 7 Home Premium. When pulled out of its showcase, Lenovo switches to Skylight UI that functions as a detached tablet with an ARM processor running alongside Lenovo's customized Linux Skylight operating system.

The base, when detached, continues to work as its own Core 2 Duo SU41 opening up potential for the U1 to truly act as two devices in one. Both laptop and tablet modes support over 5 hours of 3G Web browsing and up to 60 hours of 3G standby. The tablet's edge-to-edge glass is comfortable and the chromed edges tempting, but some areas that need attention are the keyboard (too flat for Lenovo's standards), and perhaps ergonomics (notebook weight is 3.7 pounds, tablet weight is 1.6 pounds).

The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid is not expected to hit the market before June 1st, 2010, while its suggested retail price is $999.

b) Motorola Backflip smartphone

Scheduled for a global release at the Q1 2010, the Backflip comes with a 528-MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200A processor on Google Android 1.5 OS, 3.1″ touchscreen that natively supports 320 x 480 resolution, Wi-Fi, 3G and 5-megapixel camera. Besides, the device supports Moto Blur social-networking add-ons, Bluetooth and a 2GB memory card that can be expanded up to 32GB.

However, the best asset of the Backflip is its unique design. When it is closed, both the screen and the keyboard face out. The device can be flipped in a V-shape or totally flat to watch a movie or it can be used as a picture frame or alarm clock. When the device is open, it allows users to navigate on its touchscreen or use a trackball for navigation.

c) Sony HDR-XR550V camcorder

Featuring a 240GB HDD, 3.5″ LCD with 1920 x 1080 Full HD video recording, 12-megapixel still image capture with wide angle Sony G Lens with 10x optical zoom and Direct Copy feature, Sony HDR-XR550V camcorder is a unique camera that enable users to capture astonishingly smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto shooting.

Besides, the HDR-XR550V is a great device to experience low-light sensitivity with enhanced image clarity and considerably reduced grain due its revolutionary 'Exmor R' CMOS sensor. Designed exclusively for compact cameras and camcorders, the 'Exmor R' CMOS sensor is intended for shooting video in lower lighting conditions with superior results. Also, the Sony G Lens offers enhanced optical performance delivering bright, accurate color reproduction and sharp, astonishingly detailed images.

d) Panasonic VT25 Plasma HDTV

Panasonic announced the release of the new plasma VIERA VT25 Series that is expected to hit the market in the spring of 20102 and offers users the full HD 3D capability. The set will include one pair of 3D glasses for an unforgettable 3D experience and an active LC shutter system. What is even more impressive than offering the 3D glasses – at a time that no other manufacturer provides them – is that the left and the right lens of the glasses lightens and darkens successively and too quickly to be perceived, while the TV displays the corresponding left and right-eye-specific images at the same time. The result is Panasonic's 'Full HD 3D' content of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels for each eye.

Besides, the set features Skype video calling, Wi-Fi connection (optional), the option to add Pandora, Twitter, Netflix and Fox Sports to own content through VieraCast interactive suite and infinite Black Pro, among others.

Screen:

It’s a monster. The size and quality of the screen will blow you away. The full 17.3 HD screen display uses the HD Intel Graphics Media Accelerator, making your multimedia experience worth your time. Its image appears very sharp, and equally bright. It gives justice to your videos and photos. With Dolby Home Theater Audio Enhancement, it is like watching movies in theaters.

Overall impression / Design:

Nightshade blue perfectly fits with its sophisticated function. Far from the classic black look of most laptops, Acer Aspire AS7740-6656 sets itself apart from usual. All ports are located on the sides, except the card reader. One clear disadvantage of its design is the flat keyboard. It’s really hard to adapt to and it may cause some extra typo errors for its users. Aside from it, everything is perfectly fine.

Pros

  • Dolby Home Theater Audio Enhancement
  • Built-in number keypad
  • Multi-in-1 memory card reader
  • 4 USB 2.0 ports
  • HDMI port
  • Matte finish interior surface
  • Affordable price (considering its size)

Cons

  • Short battery stamina (can run up to 3.5 hours only)
  • Touchpad location
  • Flat keyboard
  • No blu-ray drive

Bottom Line

This is one of the best 17-inch laptops when you consider price vs. performance. I would certainly recommend. It can be a complete replacement for a desktop, it looks and functions  like a real desktop. There may be some setbacks, but overall, it is a great laptop at an affordable price.

More information about the Acer Aspire AS7740-6656 17.3-Inch Laptop

This is a solid budget priced entry from Acer. This 1.6gz AMD “Vision”, Athlon based system won’t win any speed test races but it is a surprisingly snappy performer for common office tasks and internet usage. I recommend this PC for those looking for a solid, entry level computer or as a secondary PC for convenience use (i.e. a portable to supplement a desktop). It is not a good choice for strenous tasks like heavy Photoshop usage, multimedia encoding, or gaming.

PLUSES:

- Cost. At full price its a great value, but I have also seen it on sale at various stores including Amazon.com for under 400. That is phenomenal for the level of components you receive.

- 64bit Windows 7 Premium with 3GB of RAM helps keep things quick and responsive. If you buy it elsewhere do check the amount of RAM though. There are apparently slight variations of this model depending on retailer and some have 2gb instead of 3.

- A bright, clear screen with HD resolution for a very nice movie viewing experience.

- Seperate numberpad area is rarely found on laptops of this size.

- Adequate hard drive space. You should get a good external drive if you want to bring a huge library of movies or music along with you. Suggestion: Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905003FGA2E1-RK (Silver)

MINUSES:

- Battery life is unimpressive. Depending on what you are doing with it you can probably get more than the listed rating but if you need long battery operation time look for a different model.

- No webcam.

- Only 2 USB ports.

- Keys are a tad smaller than I’m used to even for a laptop (probably due to squeezing in the otherwise welcome numberpad).

- Not anywhere near as glutted as some of the bigger name brands out there but Acer still jams some trailware bloat onto it.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Processor is actually a 1.6 GHz AMD TK-42, not the older 1.2gz L310 shown on the description. I have seen this exact same discrepancy on many websites. I would guess that Acer changed their mind at the last second and shipped the better processor but failed to update the boilerplate text retailers cut and paste onto their listings. Bottom line is what you get is an upgrade over what is listed!

Sony VAIO VGN-S260 Review

June 11th, 2010 by submjgrainger

Panasonic Lumix GF1 by Michael Nilsson

{Photos noir et blanc

Sony doesn't really make powerhouse computers, but seriously with this system at it's price could of been a lot nicer.  I know what you all are thinking.  This is going to be some hate review that busts on this poor machine, but it's not.  I just want to let everyone know what they are in store for when they purchase this notebook.  Sony is one of the leading manufacturer's of electronics, and computers are definitely one of there high points now a days.  The look is what catches most people's eyes when they first see a Sony Computer.  First things first.  The thin and light feel of the S260 is what makes this a nice system.  At a little over 4 pounds, you can't go wrong.  Now with this light feel to it, comes the limited hardware.  How much hardware do you think this system can handle with it's 4 pound base?  The S260 lacks graphics, so any gamer would have a very hard time playing games on even the lowest settings.  This wouldn't be the kind of computer you would want to give your highly active gamer of a grandson, let's put it that way.  If you are going to college or a new job, this is probably a good machine for that, as it runs on a Pentium M processor at 1.7 GHZ, which is very good for this chipset.  Of course with the lighter laptops that feature the Centrino or Mobile technology, comes complete with a four hour minimum battery life, which happens to be great for anyone traveling, etc.  Taking a look at the graphics though, really disappoints me.  32 MB of video RAM is horrible and embarassing.  Computers over five years ago had this amount of RAM, and even though this machine wasn't built for the high end gamer, 64 could of been the minimum.  At 1280 x 800 resolution, there is not much to view on the 13 inch widescreen.  Sure the visuals are nice when you are using Native Resolution, but don't get overly excited, because at 114 pixels per inch at 32 MB's isn't too shabby.  Watching a movie, or just using the computer at it's minimum is fine, but anything over active would be too much for the S260.  Going into the sound very briefly.  Sony didn't do too bad on there speakers.  The sound doesn't distort when you turn it up loud.  It just lacks some bass, so if you want to put some boom into the music, this wouldn't work too well.  Connections are simple, yet some are available that aren't for most lightweight computers.  The S260 features two USB 2.0 ports, a 56 K modem, and an Ethernet port, that all come covered for protection when purchased.  The S260 comes prebuilt with one PCI Card slot, which normally is limited to two, but is limited to one this time, which was kind of weird.  The laptop comes with a Firewire port, which is very nice.  A lot of laptops do not have Firewire capability, which add's points to the S260.  Another neat entertainment feature is the six pin port that allows you to connect a camcorder or such to it, so digital editing, etc is not a problem.  I liked this a lot, and it really made me look at this system.  The system ships with XP Home Edition, which in my opinion is the weaker version of professional, but that's just me.  Home just doesn't give me the kind of condition I like in an OS, so Professional should have been the main OS.  A top point that gives Sony a great reputation is the service they offer.  I don't care what anybody says, Sony is probably the best in service.  Dell really didn't too well in the service field, Compaq or HP has limited service, but Sony is just great.  You can call up customer service, and they will have an answer for you every time.  I like that in Sony, and always have, so keep up the good work there.  Getting back to hardware information, the S260 is prebuilt with a RAM slot filled with 512 MB of RAM backed by a 333 MHZ bus.  That is pretty nice in a system like this, as there really isn't a lot of power to use.  At 1.7 GHZ, you can't really burn out a machine like this, so there is more than enough RAM in this baby to get you going where you need to go.  Average processor speed for a Pentium M processor is 1.5 GHZ, and the leading brand goes up to around 2.0 GHZ, with that not being really needed with 512 MB of RAM backing you up, it still makes some sort of difference.  1.7 GHZ is fine for the Sony S260, and I didn't see any problems when running the OS, and any programs along with it.  All in all the S260 is a nice system set packed for the average computer user.  If you want to play games, I highly recommend another system, but if you are off to college, or using this for work or just an around the house laptop, this is a machine fit for you.  7 out 10 is my rating for this.

A Comprehensive Review of the Popular Acer Aspire 5720-4649 15.4″ Laptop

June 6th, 2010 by submjgrainger

Crumpler by mexiemum

The name Acer may not be familiar with many people but to me it usually means high quality at a great price. The Acer Aspire 5720-4649 is no exception. Because they don't spend the money on advertising the consumer reaps the benefit. I'm going to discuss what you can find on the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook, how it performs, and what type of notebook user this device caters to.

The Hardware:

Screen Size: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 processor;

RAM: 1 GB (expandible to 2)

Storage: 160 GB

Optical drive: CD-R/RW combined dual layer DVD R/RW burner

Weight: 6 lbs

Graphics Card: Integrated Intel Graphics Accelerator X3100

Platform: Windows Vista Home Premium

Acer doesn't have a big time name like Sony, Apple, or HP but they have been around a while and if you know much about the technology industry they're not a new name to you. They've been around as long as I have been computing; in fact I remember when they were the first manufacturer to produce a black colored PC. Before Acer came along all PC's were that ugly gray color for the most part. So if you're concerned about the brand name, don't any more concerned than you would be with an HP, Sony or whatever Acer is established and make a quality product, this laptop is no exception.

The first thing you notice about this little budget priced notebook is how well built it is. It is extremely robust and the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 feels like a brick. Unfortunately it's about as heavy as a brick. But if you're not going to be treating your notebook with much respect then this is a good option for you, its robust. It also runs quite cool, meaning that you can leave it on and in sleep mode in its bag without concerning yourself with it burning up.

This Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook's display cranks away at a resolution of 1280 x 800. The CrystalBright display offers fairly good clarity with limited glaring. It is a little difficult to see in the direct sunlight. It gets a little washed out if you're using the laptop outside. Other than that it looks performs pretty standard.

The notebook is a little underpowered but if you limit your multitasking you won't be bothered too much by it. The integrated graphics card means you want be playing to many graphic intensive games however it performs fine for everyday tasks. You'll be able to watch plenty of movies, and play around with home videos to an extent. The hard drive at 160 GB is adequate for this notebook's price range. I did find however that 1 GB of ram is not enough. You'll need to expect to perform an upgrade if you want to do much at all. Windows Vista is a fairly intensive platform to be running and 1 GB of ram just isn't cutting it. Especially considering the integrated graphics card shares the on board ram as its Video ram. Alright enough about the hardware lets talk about the connectivity.

Connectivity:

4 2.0 USB inputs (you can use these for things like your iPod, printers, your digital camera as well as other things)

1 FireWire (This is for high speed downloading of digital video files from your digital camcorder)

Express Card

5 in 1 Media reader (This is for the little solid state memory cards that your Digital camera uses)

1 VGA out (this is for your standard monitor)

1 audio out / 1 mic

1 Ethernet jack

1 Modem jack

For the price range im surprised at the connectivity options. It has 4 USB ports which is 1 more than what I would consider standard. They're also well placed, sides and back. The firewire port is nice but I don't know if its really needed. With the integrated graphics card and single GB of ram I wouldn't expect to do much intensive video editing but it might be fun to play around with, just don't expect to do too much without some considerable lag. It is missing Bluetooth which I would like to see in any notebook but you can easily add this with a USB adaptor.

All together the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 available at under $600 is perfect for the all business notebook user or the notebook user on a budget. It would also be great for students that aren't interested in gaming, but mostly school work as well as the occasional movie, DVD burning session or CD burning session.

It’s an old enough laptop which is normally used for a couple of hours a day. Recently I used it to work from home so it was on (with the charger plugged in) for up to 12hours a day. Since then, whenever it’s on (with or without the charger plugged in) or if the charger’s plugged in but the laptop’s off, the battery light flashes red. Have I burnt it out? Can it be brought back?

What makes Ronaldinho one of the most successful soccer players in world today? Is it his skills with the soccer ball? His uncommon techiniques to impress the fans with the way he dribbles around the soccer field? The fact that he has appeared in many Nike commercials? His good looks? Or the fact that he has won many “World Player of the Year” awards?

The answer is: all of the above, and more. Ronaldinho, or as he is known in Brazil, Ronaldinho Gaucho, has been in the public eye since 1999, but it wasn't until around 2002, when this great Brazilian star “got his break”. Since then, the star of Ronaldinho Gaucho has only been getting bigger and bigger through the years.

Ronaldinho first became famous in Brazil under the name Ronaldinho (little Ronaldo) Gaucho (meaning he is from the Brazilian state Rio Grande do Sul), in order not to be confused with another Brazilian soccer star, Ronaldo (formally known as Ronaldinho in Brazil). However, when Ronaldo moved to Europe, he became well known only as Ronaldo, allowing Ronaldinho Gaucho to drop the “Gaucho” and be well known only as Ronaldinho.

In his adult life, Ronaldinho has been in three major soccer teams including Brazil's Gremio, France's Paris Saint-Germain, and Spain's always great Barcelona.

He is also one of a very few number of players to ever “play at every footballing level, for he has played at under 15, under 17, under 20, under 23, and senior level. He made his first ever appearance for Brazil playing against Scotland on 7 March1995 in an under 15s match, Brazil lost the game 1-0.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronaldinho. He was also part of the first Brazilian team to ever win the under 17s championship, which took place in Egypt, 1997.

He then went on to become a part of the under 20s Brazilian team that played on the Fifa World Cup in 1999, and eventually made his first appearance in Brazil's national team that same year in the 1999 Copa America, in which Brazil won.

Since then, Ronaldinho has collected many awards such as “FIFA World Player of the Year” in 2004 and 2005, “World Soccer Player of the Year”, also in 2004 and 2005, “FIFPro World Player of the Year” in 2005 and 2006, “UEFA Clube Footballer of the Year” in 2005 and 2006, and many many others.

Ronaldinho's personality has also helped him become the star he is today. Even with top name awards under his belt, he still remains a very humble, down to earth guy. When asked about his status as the number one soccer player in the world, he simply said: “I don't even feel I'm the best at Barça.” (Barcelona), FourFourTwo magazine.

So there we go, Ronaldinho has clearly made his mark in the world of soccer, and continues to be a great star representing Brazil in a world wide level. What does the future have in store for Ronaldinho? His contract with Barcelona ends in 2010, other than that, all we have to do is simply just keep watching, as this boy from Rio Grande do Sul keeps re-writing soccer history.

New Orleans makes a pitch to get the high school soccer championships at Tad Gormley

By Ted Lewis, The Times-Picayune

June 02, 2010, 6:30AM

Baton Rouge – A decade ago, Richard Smith became so involved in the Sugar Bowl's sponsorship of the state soccer championships that he considered it “my baby.”

The Division I and III state soccer championships were held in Tad Gormley Stadium from 2000 to 2005, but were moved to Lafayette after Hurricane Katrina. And now, Smith is doing what he can to bring his baby back to New Orleans.

The LHSAA's executive committee will be awarding future championship sites in soccer, basketball, wrestling and softball at its annual summer meeting today, and Smith's offer to be a private title sponsor is part of the local bid that would bring the 2011 Division I (Class 5A) and Division III (3A-C) title matches to Tad Gormley Stadium.

The event would be called the Old Metairie Apartments State Soccer Championships after one of the properties Smith owns.

“We really had something going there, ” Smith said of the Sugar Bowl's time as the title sponsor for soccer plus other state championship events. “We had incredible crowds and an incredible atmosphere. Hopefully, we can do it again, and we feel like we've put together a very attractive bid package.”

The Division I and III soccer championships were played at Tad Gormley Stadium from 2000 to 2005 but moved to Lafayette in 2006 because of damage to the stadium from Hurricane Katrina.

Then because of a conflict between the Sugar Bowl's title sponsor, Allstate, and State Farm, the primary sponsor for LHSAA events, the Sugar Bowl could no longer be involved.

Subsequently, Shreveport put in the winning bid for the event for the past four years.

However, this year largely because all eight of the finalists were located along the I-10, I-12 corridor — and five of the eight from the metro area — attendance at 49,000-seat Independence Stadium was no more than 100 for the Division III matches and 500 for the Division I matches the next day.

“I know there was a lot of dissatisfaction about playing in Shreveport this year, ” Smith said. “Some of it, like the weather, couldn't be helped. But the fact is that teams from the New Orleans area dominate soccer in the state, and having to travel so far for the championship puts a real hardship on their fans. So since most of them can't go to the event, we want to bring it to them.”

Shreveport, Lake Charles and Pineville also are bidding for the soccer championships.

The bid is for 2011 only, instead of the normal two years. That's because LHSAA principals area expected to vote in January whether to add the Division II (Class 4A) title matches to the other four starting in 2012, or to play all six at home sites.

Division II soccer is the only state championship event not played at a predesignated site.

City Park athletic services director Tony Biagas said Tad Gormley Stadium was being proposed as the site instead of Pan-American Stadium, which is considered more soccer-friendly, because of better broadcast facilities and a dressing room for officials, which Pan-Am Stadium does not have.

Sacred Heart Coach Tooraj Badie, whose team won the Division III girls title this season and had played in the title match in the previous four, said he would prefer to play at Pan-Am Stadium chiefly because the track at the stadium makes the field there significantly smaller.

But wherever the site, he felt staging the championships in New Orleans, at least on a rotating basis, would be a good move.

“We liked going to Shreveport, and the folks up there do a great job, ” he said. “But most of our students couldn't make it. You want them to be able to enjoy the experience, too.”

The basketball bids are for the first two years, under the new format adapted in January and starting in 2012, which will have the semifinals for boys and girls played together at three regional sites on one weekend, and the finals played at one site the next weekend.

A contingent from Baton Rouge is bidding to have the title games played at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on LSU's campus. The boys Top 28 was last played there in 1996 and has been held at Lafayette since.

Lafayette is bidding for the championship games, as is Bossier City.

The New Orleans Arena was invited to bid, but because of the inability to commit to dates because of Mardi Gras — plus the 2012 Final Four and the 2013 Women's Final Four — along with Hornets games, none was made.

Hammond and Southeastern Louisiana are the lone bidders for the southeastern regional site, and Lake Charles has the only bid for the southwestern regional. Bossier City and Monroe are bidding for the northern regional, but if Bossier gets the finals, the semifinals will go to Monroe.

The Pontchartrain Center in Kenner is seeking to retain the state wrestling championships, although there also is a bid from Bossier City.

Sulphur is the lone bidder to retain the softball championships.

Hello there from N.C. State, where I finally overcome some internet issues (operator error, no doubt) to get on line and provide updates from tonight’s game between Hoggard and North Mecklenburg for the 4-A state girls soccer championship.

We’ve got about 8 minutes left in the first half and North Meck is leading 1-0 on a goal by Alison Stearns in the 11th minute.

Other than the goal – which came on a play in which Stearns settle a ball 18 yards out from the goal, turned and fired a shot high into far corner of the net — the game has been remarkably even. And well-played. Hoggard has had its share of chances, including a cornerjust a moment ago, but as yet, it has yet to cash in. …

I thought the NCHSAA had rules about uniformity. Apparently not. Otherwise, the Vikings’ Sarah Clinard wouldn’t be allowed to wear those gl0w-in-the-dark green shoes she’s wearing with her white and light blue uniform. Clinard isn’t the only one making a fashion statement with her feet. North Meck’s Lisa Myers is wearing a pair of even brighter yellow soccer boots. …

Hoggard’s Blythe Rhodes just prevented some further damage in the final minute of the first half by racing to block a shot by North Meck’s Carly Williamson after Williamson had somehow found a seam in the Vikings’ defense and was wide open directly in front of goalie Sarah Downing. …

It’s halftime and Hoggard still trails 1-0.  …

By the way, FYI … both teams are nicknamed the Vikings,  the school colors for both are blue and white and both are trying to win their first state girls’ soccer title. …

Second half underway and North Meck got the first real chance right off the bat. Hoggard was outshot 4-3 in the first half. …

Hoggard’s defense has definitely started tightening up and the Vikings are steadily pushing the ball upfield and building an attack. They’ve maintained possession for most of the past few minutes and look determined to get the equalizer. …

31 minutes still left … not time to panic yet. …

Coach John Teller is changing things up by putting Olivia Robertson, Madyson Marshburn and Caitlin Whitehead into the lineup. Looking for a little more offense, perhaps? …

It’s starting to get physical out there, but the ref is letting them play on. That’s good news for Hoggard, which is clearly the aggressor right now. The Vikings have North Meck back on its heels .  …

Kristin Busby just made a great run that would have resulted in a goal had the North Meck goalie not beaten her to the ball at the last moment. …

And now an exquisite cross by Christy Murphy that sailed just over Busby’s head as she came flying through the box. 23 minutes left. Still 1-0 North Meck. …

Morgan Edwards and Kelsey Hamm back in for Hoggard. 20:37 left …

HOGGARD GOAL!!!!

The Vikings were finally rewarded for pressing the attack for nearly the entire second half.  The goal came off a free kick from about 35 yards out. Left back Morgan Tilley put a beautiful ball into the box, where Madyson Marshburn outjumped two North Meck defenders for the perfect header into the back fo the net with 19:01 left. …

Hoggard is right back on the attack, nearly scoring again on a scrum in the box. The Vikings also had another free kick from about the same spot as the one that led to the goal, but this one was blocked by the North Meck wall. …

Clock  stopped with 12:30  to go for an injured North Meck player. … The good news is that Melissa Williams is coming off the field on her own and looks to be okay. …

Ten minutes left and Hoggard is still pressing the attack. The Vikings look like the fresher team right now, illustrated by the way Liz Lace just blew past the North Meck defense, forcing goalie Emily Rusk to come way out of her box to beat her to the ball. …

Hoggard corner with 7 1/2 to go …

A good effort, but Hailey Piepmeyer’s kick from about 5 yards out to the right of the goal sailed high, over the net. …

Hoggard goalie with a potential game-saving play. With North Meck’s Morgan Byrne racing in to pick up a loose ball in the box, Downing came sliding out to smother the ball and keep the game tied at 1. Give Downing credit. It’s tough to be standing back there watching for as long as she has with the ball at the other end of the field and then suddenly be tested. But she came up big …

Three minutes left. Looks like we might be heading to overtime. …

Downing with a routine save on a long shot by Byrne. Then again, can any save be called routine with less than two minutes left in a tie game for the state title? …

Looks like North Meck is getting its second wind. …

End of regulation, Hoggard 1, North Mecklenburg 1. … We’re headed for overtime. …

The format is two 10 minute periods, to be played no matter how many goals are scored. If we’re still tied after that, we’ll play two five-minute sudden death periods. After that, it’s the dreaded shootout. I don’t think it’s going to come to that that, though. …

Shots in the second half: North Meck 3, Hoggard 1. The Vikings are being outshot 7-4 for the game. But that’s not the stat that counts. …

Olivia Robertson came about an inch from scoring the go-ahead goal with 7:30 left in the first overtime. Her shot from close range was headed inside the left post, but goalie Emily Rusk dove in to save it at the last second. Even after she stopped it, the ball still amost rolled over the goal line. It was so close that several Hoggard players raised their hands thinking it was in. …

Now a near-miss for North Meck as Stearns, the goal-scorer, launched a high shot just over the net …

North Meck has taken the attack away from the Vikings. It has threatened a couple of times here in overtime since Hoggard’s close call. Fatigue and humidity may be starting to take its toll …

That’s the end of the first overtime, and the break couldn’t come at a better time for Hoggard. The Vikings are starting to look tired and can use the break. Even though it’s only a short one. …

The teams have switched ends and we’re playing in the second overtime. Not trying to be a naysayer, but both goals so far have been scored in the net at which North Meck is currently shooting. …

Hoggard’s Morgan Tilley is down. Looks like a leg cramp. That’s a tough loss for the Vikings. Not only is she a top defender, but she’s also great on those long free kicks … like the one she served up to Marshburn for the Hoggard goal.

Two golden opportunites for Hoggard with 6 minutes left in the second OT. The first one came on a free kick by Marshburn from just outside the box. It looked ticketed for the top far corner, but goalie Rusk punched it over the crossbar. Then off the ensuing corner kick, Rusk came up big again on a shot from close range. …

With 3 1/2 left another close call. This time Marshburn, in a full sprint, blocked a clearing attempt by the goalie. The  ball caromed off her back toward the net and trickled just outside the far goal post. …

Great stuff here! …

The Hoggard fans in the stands are going crazy as the Vikings contiue to press the issue. Then, just like that, North Meck’s Katherine Rusk got behind the Hoggard defense and rocketed one just wide ride with 1 minute left in the second OT. …

And we’re going to sudden death! …

Whew! …

Next goal wins. Sudden death has begun. …

That’s the end of the first 5-minute golden goal period. Five more minutes to go, then penalty kicks. Man, that’s a horrible way of deciding a championship game. I know it’s not good for a reporter on deadline, but I wish they’d let them play until somebody scores a goal … no matter how long it takes. That’s the only fair way of doing it. …

Second sudden death period off and running, and just 30 seconds in Busby fires a shot from the top of the box and sails it high. …

And  Busby gets another chance, arriving a split second late before Rusk comes out and knocks the ball away. …

Now skill is taken out of the equation and it becomes a matter of luck.  We’re going to penalty kicks. …

How even is it?  Both teams have 10 shots. Both goalies have four saves. Hoggard has 4 corners to 3 for North Meck. …

Hoggard will go first in the shootout. There are five rounds. I’ll keep you posted as the shots are taken. …

First up, Hoggard’s Kristin Busby. GOAL!!!!

North Meck’s Byrne … Goal

Next up for Hoggard, CHelsea DeLiberto … GOAL!!!!

North Mecks’ McAnaulty, goal

And Hoggards Tilly SCORES!!!

North Meck’s Robinson scores .. 3-3

Hoggard’s Piepmeyer is denied by goalie Rusk. Vikings in trouble

But wait, North Meck’s Williamson hits the cross bar and Hoggard’s Marshbun SCORES!!!!!

Rusk, the goalie’s sister scores to tie it at 4. .. and we go to sudden death in the shootout.

Next up for Hoggard, Liz Lace… GOAL!!!!

Lyndey Byrne scores for North Meck ..

Whitehead up for Hoggard .. GOAL!!!

Shalon keeps it alive for North Meck

Rhodes is stopped by Rusk. Uh oh …

And Christy Murphy, the girl with the yellow shoes, scores in the eighth round of the shootout to give the state title to North Meck.

Just a terrible way to end the game and the season. It’s a shame it came down to that. Hoggard deserved better.

5 Elements to Being a Good Still Photographer on the Set of an Independent Film

May 31st, 2010 by submjgrainger

I made some Photos in the last couple of weeks – please tell me your thoughts:

Gold-Rot-Schwarz by daruma*

gothic online shops

Abbie Warnock is a Utah photographer with a very distinct style. She has earned several awards and has been published in publications as varied as AMERICAN PHOTO to Punk Rock Confidential.

She shoots incredible portraits and live concert photos, but it does not end there. Warnock recently released her first book. INITIUM, which is latin for “beginning”, collects photos from her first five years of work in Salt Lake City, UT. On the eve of unleashing INITIUM she answered a few questions about working in photography.

What first attracted you to photography?

I had a teacher in high school that attracted me to it. He treated the classes as so much more than a high school art class, he showed me that it was not only a career option but a way to express myself and help other people express themselves through my lens.

How did you get started yourself? What was your first camera?

I'd been carrying around a cruddy little camera for most of my life, from 110 film snappers to 35mm point and shoots. When I progressed in my photos courses in high school, it came time I needed to have an SLR. My parents couldn't afford that kind of splurge right away, so I borrowed my uncle's Canon Elan II until my parents helped me out with a Canon Rebel 2000.

What photographers – well known or unknown – inspire you?

Annie Leibovitz has incredible lighting…I've adored her softbox location work since I very first got into photography. I like Annie's lighting, but it was Herb Ritts who made me want to photograph people. His photos not only made his subjects look like a million bucks, but his images were so personable. I could tell just by looking at his images that he was a friendly and awesome person, who put his subjects totally at ease and had a fun time with them. That was such a big thing for me. I think there are a lot of phony photographers out there right now, who treat their clients just like that-clients. Your subjects should want to be your friend by the end of their session, it should be a fun and awesome experience.

What equipment do you use? Is there a certain piece of gear you could not live without?

I find that I use my tripod a lot. I know that sounds like a lame answer, but it's true. I love shooting in low light/sunset scenes when I do outdoor portraits, and that takes a longer exposure at a low ISO to get the goods. I avoid image noise whenever possible.

Do you have any goals in mind with your photography?

Big budget published shoots with influential people that I admire, where location options are plentiful and creative ideas are welcome.

Do you shoot in film or digital? Do you prefer one over the other?

Digital. I learned on film and am so glad I did. Film teaches you the value of proper exposure, and taught me to shoot on Manual mode at all times. I love knowing how to have complete control over my exposure values.

What post-processing tools/software do you use? How much does that influence your photography?

CS3. I was taught the ways of the portrait retouching ninja when I was working at a wedding studio, and it's a skill I use and modify everyday. I think it's important to know post production and to want to learn it. If you want to stick to purist photography, that's fine, but at least know what's going on out there! Don't shoot naked photos out of ignorance and showcase it under the guise of “purist art.”

How much into the “business” side of photography have you been into?

I can't lie, I'm a creative minded person, which means I suck at crunching numbers and marketing. Luckily, I have a wise friend who is a business whiz, and she is more than excited to help me start up my business, and I'm completely grateful to her for believing in me enough to want to help.

What was the process like putting your book together?

Choosing the photos that went in and the order that they were placed in took way longer than anticipated. I'm pretty anal about things like that. I designed wedding albums for about five years when I worked at a photography studio, and it taught me a lot about visual flow and moving from one image to another while still pleasing the eye. Consideration for everything from fashion to nature to music, to spreading out horizontal photos between vertical shots evenly, to color flow…it took about three months just to narrow down and do all of that.

I put the whole book together myself after getting the initial design down. I finished the theme in Chicago with two other people, and then had an editor go through and narrow down the shots and give me reasoning as to why they were getting cut. It's good to get feedback from a neutral party that will tell it to you straight.

What advice would you give new photographers?

Constantly shoot, be your own biggest critic, find your faults and learn from them, and nevermind the naysayers. Insecure photographers are the first to point out faults and call you awful, so just ignore them. It's mostly because they build themselves up by tearing others down, and you just need to tune them out.

Nearly 50 photos on land and people of Vietnam taken by Italian photographer Maurizio Cofini are on display at an exhibition in Rome.

In his second exhibition on Vietnam, Maurizio Cofini continues to depict the special life in the country in a wide range of subjects from Hanoi’s old quarters, Halong Bay, the Mekong Delta river region to minority ethnic children and daily lives of other normal people across the country.

The 54-year-old professional photographer, who has won numerous major awards in Italia, has featured Vietnam as a peace-loving nation recovering from long-time wars to vigorously change.

The display, along with the previous one in September last year, is the result of his five visits to Vietnam within 15 years.

Most people have probably heard of situations where a wedding photographer and videographer did not get along together during a wedding assignment.  When a couple is in the process of getting married, they may not ever have been aware that their photographer and videographer were arguing with each other the entire time.  Both the videographer and photographer are vying for a chance to shoot the wedding without one getting in the way of the other.  Disagreements and lack of planning between the two vendors can lead to not only an embarassing confrontation between the videographer and photographer, but it can also result in bad and untimely photographs and video shots.  What can a couple do to help the photographer and videographer get along and work together smoothly during your wedding? Before you hire your photographer and videographer, look and see how long both vendors have been working in the business.  The longer a vendor has been working, the more experience they have working with other vendors.  When going through the interview process, ask the vendor how they work alongside other vendors.  Get a feel of whether or not your photographer hates working with videographers and if the attitude is the same the other way around.  You definitely do not want to hire people that are not going to get along with others.  This can really be a recipe for disaster. When you do hire your photographer and videographer, make sure that they contact each other and get to know one another.  Most couples are suprised that in most cases, the first time that a photographer and videographer will speak to one another is on the wedding day.  Let them get the feel for each other's styles and preferences for covering a wedding.  This will help them create a comfortability between each other.Make an itinerary for your day, and make sure that your photographer and videographer receive it at least a week before the wedding.  Any special events, locations, or activities that the couple and the families will do during the wedding day must be in the itinerary.  If there are any questions about the itinerary, they can be anwered before the wedding day.   Staying on the wedding interary schedule will alleviate stress to not only the couple but also the vendors.  Any specific rules or restrictions pertaining to shooting at a particular location must be discussed with your videographer and photographer.  If a church is only allowing your vendors to shoot at specific spots inside the location, the photographer and videographer must discuss these issues between each other before they arrive at the event to assure they don't get in the way of each other. And just a small side tip…Make sure your photographer and videographer are given priority to shoot your wedding over friends and family members that may have brought  cameras as well.  Remember, you are paying a lot of money for these people to shoot your wedding.  Let the professionals handle it.
