In the semi-finals of Women's Soccer at the 2008 Summer Olympics, U.S.A. defeated Japan by a score of 4-2. The win propels the U.S. Women into a Gold Medal match against Brazil. This will be the 4th straight Olympics where the United States Women have played in the Gold Medal game, and their chance to bring home a 3rd Gold Medal for the U.S. It will be a tough match-up against the high scoring offense of the Brazilian team, but it looks to be quite a good game if both teams are playing as well as they look on paper.

The game began on a rough note for the U.S., who went down very early by a score of 1-0 to Japan, when Shinoby Ohno knocked one in during the 16th minute of play. The defensive front of Japan made it very difficult for the United States, and it seemed like an upset could possibly be brewing in the semi-final match-up. Heading into the 41st minute, the United States finally made it on to the scoreboard with a shot just beyond 6 yards from Angela Hucles. It broke the ice, and less than three minutes later, Lori Chalupny put in another goal after beating two defenders off the ball. Heading into the half, the U.S. had a 2-1 lead, and a lot of momentum swinging to their side of things.

The second half started off much as the first half had ended, with the U.S. putting a lot of pressure on goal, and getting many chances off of corner kicks as well as hustling plays down the sidelines. In the 70th minute, Heather O'Reilly received the ball, and with a swift kick from long range, knocked one right over the goalie to give the U.S. a 3-1 lead. In the 80th minute of play, Angela Hucles knocked in another one that surprised the Japanese goalie, and gave the United States an almost insurmountable lead of 4-1. Japan caught a break in the 3rd minute of injury time by putting in a goal after the ball had been bounced around in front of the U.S. goalie for what seemed like many minutes. The game ended with the United States women coming away with a 4-2 win over Japan, and an automatic berth in the final match against Brazil, who had earlier defeated Germany in their semi-final match.

The final match of Women's Soccer at the Beijing Summer Olympics will take place on Thursday, August 21st to decide who will take home the Gold Medal. The scheduled start time for the game is at 9:00pm Beijing Time, which translates to a 9:00am Eastern Standard Start Time in the United States. In the 2004 Olympics that took place in Athens, the U.S. defeated Brazil in the finals to take home the Gold. Now Brazil gets a re-match of that event, and the United States Women look to duplicate those efforts.

2010 World Cup: History of the World Cup

As American soccer players continue to improve, the best American professional soccer players often play overseas in Europe and are known as “Yanks Abroad”. Each year new players are trying out for different European teams and some players are signed from USA's Major League Soccer. Most of the best American players are playing in Europe. Here is a list of the American player and their club team for the 2009-2010 season.

The 2009-2010 soccer season is especially important for the US Men's National Soccer Team, as they will be playing in the World Cup in South Africa, June 2010. The performance of the US team at the World Cup is directly related to how in form the players are from their club teams and the level of play they have competed in.

1. Clint Dempsey, Fullham, English Premiership

Dempsey has been a regular starter and one of the best players for Fullham over the past couple of years. During the 2007-2008 season, Dempsey played in almost 40 games for Fullham and scored 8 goals with 2 assists as a midfielder and forward. Dempsey has been a regular starter and outstanding performer in the USA National team as well. His performance, including 3 goals, helped the US reach the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup where they lost to Brazil 3-2.

2. Oguchi Onyewu, A.C. Milan, Italian Serie A

Onyewu has played in the top league in Belgium over the past several years at Standard Liege. He helped them win a league title and compete in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup during the 2008-2009 season. His performance for Standard Liege and for the US National team earned him a contract at one of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, A.C. Milan. He will try to earn a starting spot with A.C. Milan during the 2009-2010 season and will again compete in the UEFA Champions League.

3. Tim Howard, Everton, English Premiership

Howard has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Everton since the summer of 2006. After arriving to Everton from Manchester United on transfer, Everton bought him outright to a 5-year deal after his outstanding performances. He led Everton to the final of the FA Cup in the spring of 2009 and competed in the UEFA Cup. Howard has been a world-class player for both Everton and the US National Team over the past several years and is looking forward to a great 2009-2010 season.

4. Michael Bradley, Borussia Monchengladbach, German Bundesliga

Bradley played for Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga last year and was a consistent starter for the team. Before coming to Germany, he had several successful seasons at the top pro league in Holland. A regular starter in the central midfield for the US team, Bradley will hope to help Monchengladbach to a Bundesliga top 5 finish.

5. Carlos Bocanegra, Rennes, France, Ligue 1

Bocanegra helped Rennes reach a top 5 finish in league play last year to earn a place in European play. The regular starter at left defense for Rennes, Bocanegra will hope to continue to improve his defensive skills as the likely captain for the US soccer team at the World Cup.

6. Jonathan Spector, West Ham United, English Premiership

Spector has been a consistent player for West Ham United since 2006. He has played in both league games and the UEFA Cup. A great performance for the US National Team at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009 likely has earned Spector a starting spot on the team.

7. Josimer Altidore, Villareal, Spanish Primera Liga

Altidore had an up and down year with Villareal last year as he battled several injuries. While only turning 20 years old during the 2009-2010 season, Altidore hopes to earn a regular starting spot for the excellent Villareal side. He may well also start for the USA in the World Cup.

8. Charlie Davies, Sochaux, France, Ligue 1

After a high goal scoring year in Sweden and for the US National Team, Davies earned a contract with Sochaux during the summer 2009 transfer window. If he continues to play well and start with his club team, he is a likely starter at forward for the US during the World Cup.

9. Maurice Edu, Rangers, Scotland, Premier League

After only getting sporadic playing time, Edu began to start for Rangers in February 2009 and was a big reason that they won the Scottish Premier League title and League Cup. Edu hopes to return to form this year at Rangers and potentially earn a starting spot with the US team at midfield or defense.

10. Jay DeMerit, Watford, English Championship (Division 2)

DeMerit is a central defender and captain for Watford of the English Football League Championship. He will start for Watford and hopes to lead them to promotion to the English Premiership level and FA Cup advancement. DeMerit's outstanding play during the FIFA Confederations Cup may have earned him a starting spot with the US team at the World Cup.

In a little more than three weeks, 32 teams will converge on South Africa with one goal in mind, winning the World Cup.  Now, seriously, only about a half dozen countries have a chance to grab the trophy, but the hope is out there for teams to pull the upset…surprise the World.

The USA squad has been hit by some serious injuries leading up to the World Cup, most devastating, the injuries Charlie Davies suffered in an automobile accident, where a young lady was killed. Davies, a Boston College product, worked tirelessly to get ready for the Men's National Team training camp, but he did not make Coach Bob Bradley's roster as practices begin shortly.

Landon Donovan, who had the chance to play at the highest level of the game, in England this year, is looking forward to making amends for a terrible World Cup in 2006.

The US play their first game Saturday, June 12, versus England.  US soccer fans began making their plans for viewing parties for this one when the World Cup draw was held months ago.

The first two weeks of the event, there are games every day.  Two on opening day, including Mexico taking on the host country, South Africa in the opener.  Then three each day until the final games of the first round when there are four.

The start times will be early, (6, 8:30 and 1:00), but establishments will be filled with fans wanting to catch the greatest month long spectacle in sports.

Give it a look-see.  Stop in a pub, grab a Guinness, and catch a match with some of the die- hards.  You won't get beaten up.  Their are not many soccer hooligans in the Midwest.

I bet you'll enjoy yourself!  You can thank me later!

The soccer Fever is coming world cup 2010. Huge Event with lots of celebrations and will give us a new world champion. It will take place in picturesque country of South Africa and the first game for the Soccer World Cup in South Africa will be played on 11 June 2010. The games will be played at Cape Town, Rustenburg, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Polokwane and Nelspruit.

Selectio of player on the club is very important part. It involves the sponsors of the team. So that they can offer more money to the player to attract him in the team. The first step in creating a soccer club is deciding the level of skill or competence you want your club to achieve. With this you will be able to determine the members you wish to get. FSV Mainz Fussball Trikot

Rolling Thunder is the wheelchair power soccer team that I play for. The name itself describes the fun, wild adventure, and mayhem which will ensue. This game allows many people having an assortment of disabilities, to become competitive again for at least a couple of hours. The requirements are simple enough; fall under the age category of 5 – 105 years, drive a power chair, are disabled and yet still posses a spirit for competition. When you come to a game you will find out quickly why they call us: “the fastest things on four wheels since a grocery cart at a shopping spree!”

Last summer I found out about this zany soccer team when I needed some routine maintenance done on my power-chair. My loyal friend Patrick (from the local medical equipment branch) had come by to get it done for me and had brought with him an article from the next-county-over's newspaper. This paper had in it a celebrated and inspirational story which was highlighted by the rising sport of power-soccer. After talking with Patrick and reading this article, I was ready to explore these untested and dry waters.

1] This story shared a wealth of information with me and here are a few of them:

Ø Male and female players are often on the same team as well as opposing sides.

Ø The game is usually played in a gymnasium or on a regulation basketball court.

Ø Two teams of four power chair users attack, defend, and maneuver an oversized soccer ball in an attempt to score points on a goal.

Ø Power Soccer is a true dynamic development. It is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users.

Ø This action packed team sport combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the wheelchair itself.

Ø Participants include persons with: quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, head trauma, stroke and other disabilities.

Ø Whoever has found the will to win, and has the competitive spirit of an athlete is in no way limited or diminished because of confinement to a wheelchair.

Ø Practices are held twice a month all year, with an organized game happening once per month.

Ø Competitive games are from September through May and national tournaments are held 1-2 times per year.

So I got a schedule and rolled on down there. The moment that the pit crew had bolted on the guard to my leg-rests, I knew that I was in for a treat. The teams were divided into two groups and away we went— smash, bang, ram, and we hadn't even scored a goal yet! This rush of action gave me a feeling of excitement, importance, unbridled freedom, and of course, a power— which I hadn't felt since before my car accident. After shaking out some much needed apprehension, the two coaches huddled us all together and went over a few guidelines and rules.

In a memorable game for me a few weeks ago, I assisted on two goals to a fellow teammate and had my first 'hat-trick,' in which I scored three goals. The cheerleaders it appeared, had shown this jubilant side of themselves before, 'cause they were doing all sorts of screaming and dancing and bringing the crowd to their feet. Our team ended up winning that game but our celebratory attitudes were short-lived. The reason being: it truly doesn't matter who wins or loses; the fact that we are all out there getting involved in something is reward enough!

It is my feeling that disability is a state of mind; a person's spirit needs to be awakened, enriched, and exercised in order to feel separation from that which binds us. I would love to see some of my fellow wheelers just get out there and find something which puts them into a euphoric feeling again. After all, life is not a dress rehearsal waiting for the big show— rather, a gift not to be wasted on the sidelines watching others.

Three million children play soccer each year.  With World Cup events in recent months, there is a new rejuvenated excitement associated with soccer for children.  For those seeking an energetic, competitive sport, requiring endurance and providing optimal work outs for the cardiovascular system, soccer is a perfect choice in sporting activities, especially for children. Offered as both and indoor and outdoor sport, soccer is exciting and exhilirating but also dangerous when proper play and stretching techniques are not followed. Protecting a child from the injuries associated with soccer will allow for a more pleasant experience soccer experience.

Like adults, child suffer a common soccer injury involving the knees. Specifically, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), in a child soccer player, may sustain signficant strain through the various leg maneuveurs required for completing a soccer drill. Working within the knee to provide stability, the ACL can be partially or totally torn leading to immediate and sudden pain, many months of rehabilitation and, often, surgery to correct the repair.  For children, learning to prevent ACL injuries is a lesson that should be taught in the early years of soccer participation.

Second to ACL injuries, many child soccer players develop ankle disorders also attributed to the lower extremity manuveurs in controlling soccer ball manipulations.   Ankle disorders, in child soccer players, often become chronic in nature and progressively worsen with soccer play over several months and years.   T o avoid ankle injuries in child soccer players, appropriate technique in strengthen lower leg muscles and foot muscles is highly recommended in both the soccer setting as well as in a fitness facility or home setting.   In fact, with proper stretching techniques, many child soccer players will avoid the most common strain involving the tibialis.  In this type of injury, the child soccer player may complain of ankle pain but, instead, learn the pain is associated with the muscles on the backside of the leg, connecting the tibia and the fibula together.   Avoiding this type of injury, at an early age, will lead the child into many years of soccer activity.

In addition to general stretching techniques, to prevent ankle and knee injuries in child soccer players, parents should also encourage the child to wear protective equipment including mouthguards, which will reduce the number of injuries sustained.  Additionally, what is not commonly known is that many child soccer injuries are comparable to that of running injuries as the same level of fitness and endurance is required in children.  In other words, injuries which are sustained in a running exercise can often be damaging to the body to the same degree as those in soccer.   For injured child soccer athletes, this may be disconcerting as the potential for any type of simple running exercise will be inhibited with a soccer injury thus leading to an inability to perform physical activity both at home, on the soccer field as well as at school.

As parents, providing the appropriate guidance and supervision to young soccer players will lead to many years of fun and enjoyment in the athletic programs.   With soccer, utilizing proper stretching techniques, in addition to appropriate protection, will ensure the child soccer play remains active with the soccer program while also continuing to pursue other physical activities at home and at school.  For more information regarding soccer injuries in children, visit www. footy4kids.co.uk.

TORONTO – The sun will be over the yardarm a little bit earlier during the FIFA World Cup, thanks to Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone.

“We’re approaching more of a European attitude to alcohol — that is, in moderation it’s good,” Pantalone said, shortly after his motion to allow bars to open an hour early during the world soccer championship starting in June passed at city council.

“It will be appreciated by the general public and it will be appreciated by the people who enjoy a good game of football with a glass of beer in the hot days of July and August.”

The games are being played in South Africa and will air early in the morning here in Toronto.

The changes will allow bars to start serving at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. Closing time will remain 2 a.m.

Only two councillors voted against the measure — Cesar Palacio and John Parker. Palacio got ribbed afterwards by Councillor Gord Perks, who accused him of being a member of the junior temperance league.

Pantalone, who is running to replace Mayor David Miller in the Oct. 25 civic election, also drew some jibes.

“Need a drink, Joe?” shouted Councillor Brian Ashton after the vote.

He did, however, pick up some unexpected support in his mayoral campaign.

“Joe for mayor,” called out Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti — a curious position since he too is running in the race.

“I look forward to all the other candidates conceding the election right now,” Pantalone said.

“That’s probably not going to happen but I’ll take any converts I can.”

The Championship play-offs kick off this weekend. We'll take a closer look at the matches later in the week.

First of all, Nobes takes a look at the four teams fighting it out for a place in next season's Premier League.

Nottingham Forest

Story of the season:

After narrowly avoiding the drop last term, Forest have been rejuvenated under the wily Billy Davies.

An expensive summer rebuilding job took time to settle in, but the team went on a 20-match unbeaten run from September to January lifting them right into the automatic promotion mix.

Ultimately, they were unable to last the pace with Newcastle and West Brom, but comfortably took 3rd place.

Manager:

Billy Davies kept up his proud record of never finishing outside the top six in the Championship when in charge for a full season. The 45-year-old is now embarking on his fourth play-off campaign.

He twice lost with Preston, in the 2005 final and 2006 semis, and was promoted with Derby through the play-offs in 2007.

A passionate Scot, he is known for his attention to detail on the training ground and fiery temperament on the touchline. Tactically very shrewd.

Strength:

Forest have turned the City Ground into a fortress. They have lost just three times on home soil and are unbeaten there since September – a run of 19 matches.

They've also conceded just 13 goals at home this season, including keeping clean sheets in nine of their last ten City Ground contests.

The experience of manager Davies in play-off situations must also count in their favour.

Weakness:

Davies's men were the last professional team to be unbeaten away from home this season. However, after going 13 games without defeat on the road, they've failed to win any of their last 11 away matches.

Having finished third, Forest will also have pressure on them – and expectations will be high that they can improve upon their disappointing play-off record and return to the top flight.

Key players:

Forest have conceded just 40 goals in their 46 games, and have an excellent defensive unit – including keeper Lee Camp . His performances this season have led to him being suggested for the England World Cup squad.

He's also taken as captain after a long-term injury to influential midfield man Paul McKenna.

That also increases the importance of winger Paul Anderson. The former Liverpool man has shown glimpses of pure quality this term and his pace can electrify any encounter.

Powerful and pacy striker Dexter Blackstock – who's found the back of the net 14 times this season – could also play an important role.

Play-off history:

Forest have appeared in the play-offs twice – losing in the semi finals both times.

In 2002/3, under Paul Hart, they lost to Sheffield United 5-4 over the two legs in the Championship play-offs.

In 2006/7, Colin Calderwood's Forest team threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 5-2 in the second leg to Yeovil in the League One play-offs.

Top flight pedigree

Unbelievably, promotion to the Premier League would see Forest make their first appearance in the top flight since 1999.

The former English and European Champions were constant members of the top flight during the '80s and most of the '90s.

They have fallen on harder times recently – including a three year spell in League One – but can still legitimately claim to be at home in the Premier League.

Cardiff City

Story of the season:

One of the pre-season favourites for the top six, Cardiff have, for once, lived up to their billing and consistently held down a play-off spot this term.

They missed out on the top six by the narrowest of margins on the final day last season. However, this time they have put off-field financial worries aside and shown greater resilience.

Rarely out of the top six, they have shown the typical attacking flair and quality associated with their play to take 4th.

Manager:

Dave Jones has been in charge in the Welsh capital for five seasons, and has finally taken them into the play-offs.

The Scouser has experience in the end of season lottery – taking Wolverhampton Wanderers into the play-offs twice – winning them the second time around.

At 53, he is the oldest manager in the play-offs, and likes to encourage his team to play good football and entertain.

Strength:

Quite simply, on their day, Cardiff have the ability to score plenty of goals and beat anyone in the division.

They hit Derby and Bristol City for six, and scored four past Sheffield United, Scunthorpe, Watford, Peterborough, and play-off opponents Leicester.

A rich array of attacking quality up-front, in midfield, and out wide makes containing them a difficult prospect.

Weakness:
Even with them making the top six this term, Cardiff have still shown the kind of brittleness associated with previous campaigns.

Throwing away a 4-0 lead at struggling Peterborough was typical of their ability to squander good positions. A willingness to play good football can often lead them to being exposed at the back too.

Key players:

With Cardiff's attacking emphasis, striker Michael Chopra can always be guaranteed good service and plenty of opportunities. He's found the back of the net 19 times.

City's top scorer though is actually midfielder Peter Whittingham . The left winger and dead-ball specialist has notched up an outstanding 23 goals for the Bluebirds this term.

At the back, summer signing from Walsall, Anthony Gerrard, has matured into an excellent centre back whose presence at the back will be important if Cardiff are to prosper.

Play-off history:

This may be Cardiff's first time in the Championship play-offs, but they've appeared twice in the end of season lottery in the lower leagues.

In 1996/7 they lost out to Northampton in the League Two play-offs in the semi finals.

However, they had more success in League One in 2003. After seeing off Severnside rivals Bristol City in the semis, they defeated QPR in the final to seal promotion to the Championship.

Top flight pedigree:

Cardiff have never played in the Premier League. Indeed, it's been 48 years since City appeared in the top flight of English football.

During the '80s and '90s, City struggled along in the lower two tiers before winning promotion to the Championship in 2003.

That's where they have remained ever since – flirting with the play-offs on occasions and holding down a comfortable mid-table position.

Leicester City

Story of the season:

The Foxes were last season's League One winners, and have continued their form this term as they have mounted a second successive promotion campaign.

They've never dropped lower than 10th, and were always in the running for the play offs.

A run of four straight defeats late on threatened their top six position, but City recovered to win their last five games and secure 5th spot.

Manager:

Nigel Pearson has been the architect of Leicester's renaissance after taking charge of the club in 2008.

City walked away with the League One title in his first season at the helm, and the step-up in division hasn't stopped them from continuing the same impressive form.

A talented coach, he has marshalled a team who work very hard and are well organised. His record in the transfer market has also been very good.

Strength:

A side with an excellent work ethic and organisation, who have the ability to play good football, but also deal with the physical side of the game.

Leicester also have a group of players who are used to winning and have developed a great team spirit and unity over the past two years.

Five successive wins also means they come into the play-offs in good form.

Weakness:

Pearson is the only one of the four managers to have never experienced play-off football before. Can he prepare his side for the mental battle ahead in dealing with the pressure?

Given their form, winning mentality, play-off history, and impressive home record, it could be argued too that Leicester are the favourites. Can they handle that title?

Key Players:

Joint top scorer Matty Fryatt is returning from injury and is always a reliable source of goals for the Foxes – particularly in key games where chances may be few and far between.

Midfield man Richie Wellens has been a steadying presence on the ball for City this term and has the vision and guile that may be needed to open up a tight encounter.

Andy King has had another excellent season – getting into double figures in the scoring charts.

Play-off history:

Leicester are looking to make it a hat-trick of promotions via the Championship play-offs.

They've actually made the play-offs five times, losing the 1992 final to Blackburn and the 1993 final to Swindon.

However, they were finally promoted in the 1994 final under Brian Little after beating local rivals Derby County 2-1.

Two years later, and this time under Martin O'Neill, they were 2-1 victors over Crystal Palace at Wembley to gain promotion again.

Top flight pedigree:

After promotion in 1994, Leicester were instantly relegated but bounced back at the first attempt. That heralded the start of six successive seasons in the top flight before relegation in 2002.

They once again bounced back at the first time of asking, but were immediately relegated. Before this season, they've rarely looked like returning to the Premier League, and even suffered relegation to League One in 2008.

Blackpool

Story of the season:

The surprise package of the Championship. Despite having one of the smallest budgets and crowds in the division, the Seasiders have been a revelation.

They made a solid start to the season, without ever looking like top six challengers. However, by Christmas, they were firmly in the play off race.

An inconsistent spell at the start of 2010 left them five points off the play-offs with eight to play.

Six wins from seven saw them edge out Swansea on the penultimate weekend and a last day draw secured them 6th and the final play-off berth.

Manager:

After a disastrous tenure at Leicester, Ian Holloway has rebuilt his reputation with Blackpool.

Tipped to struggle before a ball had been kicked, the popular Bristolian was backed in the transfer market – including the signing of midfielder Charlie Adam for £500,000.

After a reputation for producing effective if dour sides at Plymouth and QPR, Holloway has the Tangerines playing an attractive, adventurous style of play which has won as many plaudits as points.

Strength:

They are massive underdogs. Nobody expected Blackpool to be in the play-offs, and their hopes looked dead and buried a couple of months ago.

They now come into the play-offs in good form and have turned Bloomfield Road into a difficult place for opponents to visit – only faiing to score once at home all season.

They will also be pleased with facing Forest – they are the only side to do the 'double' over the East Midlands side this term.

Weakness:

How much more can they give? Holloway has overachieved getting Pool this far – can they continue their fairytale over two legs in the pressure cooker environment of the play-offs?

They've also lost more games away from home than any other top six side – and must travel for the all-important second leg.

Key players:

The driving force behind Pool's play-off charge has been former Rangers man Charlie Adam . With 17 goals and numerous assists to his name this term, he will be vital to any hope they have of promotion.

Keeper Matt Gilks has taken over as the Number 1 at Bloomfield Road. An excellent shot stopper, he may be called upon regularly in the play-offs.

Veteran striker Brett Ormerod – in his second spell at the club – has been in typically good scoring form with 12 goals over the campaign. His goals could be key again.

Play-off history:

The Seasiders are appearing in the play-offs for the sixth time and have had a mixed bag of results.

They lost the 1991 League Two final to Torquay on penalties, but 12 months later were victorious at the same stage on spot kicks against Scunthorpe.

Their next taste of the play-offs came in 1996, where Sam Allardyce's Blackpool threw away a 2-0 first leg advantage to lose to Bradford 3-2 in the semis.

In 2001, they were promoted from League Two via the play-offs under Steve McMahon after a 4-2 win over Leyton Orient in the final.

Most recently, they gained promotion to the Championship after beating Yeovil 2-0 in the 2007 final to win the League One play-offs under Simon Grayson.

Top flight pedigree:

Promotion to the Premier League would be a first for Blackpool. The Lancashire team haven't played in the top flight of English football since 1971.

Since then, they've tumbled all the way down to the lower reaches of the basement division and, before their 2007 promotion to the Championship, yo-yoed between the bottom two divisions in the Football League.

We'll have an in-depth look at the two Championship play-off ties later in the week.

With the EPL title decided–Chelsea–and La Liga set to go down this weekend–either Real Madrid or Barca–many of the World Cup squads have players in flux on league rosters and not soon after their seasons end they will need to be in camp with their World Cup squads getting ready for the monthlong tournament in South Africa.

How do these league races effect the World Cup?  Well, every guy who’s playing the World Cup and is already “out of it” will have plenty of time to rest and recuperate–plus they will have time to mentally rest and recuperate.

It’s the mental aspect that helps the most as there are guys who are just bodies with no brains and they are simply tired of thinking.  Look at someone like Kobe Bryant.  He wins a Gold Medal in Beijing, then he wins the NBA title, but he had some down time between the two and he actually lost the NBA title before the Olympics in 2008.

I don’t know how he managed at the Olympics, but he is the exception to the rule because most people just wouldn’t be able to mentally handle the strain of losing, winning, doing the whole season, and winning a title.

The same is true here.  Even the best players need a break and teams like Portugal and Argentina–who count on guys like Messi and Ronaldo–will have some early hiccups with their stars playing so late into their own club seasons.

I don’t expect these hiccups to be big, but they will be there.  A few scares here and there before they pull themselves together, but if one of those hiccups lasts too long them someone is going to have a really bad summer.

I don’t wish it on anyone, I’m just saying.  Club play is hard and doing it right before the World Cup is harder still.

Dividend based portfolios offer a secure base for one's investment strategy. A secure dividend helps cushion stock prices during market downturns and companies that regularly raise dividends have a growth base for boosting stock price in better environments. Here are some stocks you might consider for using as a cornerstone of your investment strategy. They are in multiple sectors so an entire stock investment structure could be constructed using only these or similar companies.

Factual information is from CNBC.com and obtained during market hours on 01/07/2010.

Altria Symbol: MO Price: $20.04 Dividend Yield: $6.80
The original sin stock selling tobacco and tobacco products. A true cash cow the dividend yield has been well above the stock market average since the invention of dirt. If one has no moral objection to selling tobacco MO is a good core dividend holding

Automatic Data Processing Symbol: ADP Price: $43.21 Dividend Yield: $3.21
A nice dividend is one reward for holding this stock that provides payroll services to a variety of businesses. A good economy will also set things up for increasing the dividend. More jobs, more hirers, more money for ADP. Also an improving economy will mean higher interest rates. ADP makes money on the “float.” They collect money from business to meet payroll taxes, hold it until it's due, them pay the government. During the hold period they collect interest on other people's money. All kinds of ways to win with this nice yielding stock.

Coca Cola Symbol KO Price: $56.06 Dividend Yield: 2.93%
Coca Cola has been raising it's dividend annually for year. There's still growth opportunities ahead overseas. It's stodgy, but a secure payer likely to continue increasing it's payout in the years ahead.

AT&T Symbol: T Price: $27.37 Dividend Yield: 6.14%
Another cash cow. All the front line telecom stocks such as AT&T and Verizon should do well as the 4G phones come to market.

Waste Management: Symbol: WM Price: 33.97 Dividend Yield: $3.42
The largest waste removal operation in the country. The yield is healthy and an economy that's ramping up should have more need of their services. There'll always be trash making this look like a stock one can hold over a long period.

General Mills: Symbol: $71.23 Price: $71.23 Dividend Yield: 2.76%
The dividend yield is a bit lower than most, but like Coca Cola it has consistently raised it's dividend annually. A staple stock one can plan to hold for an extended period.

Pfizer Symbol: PFE Price: $18.64 Dividend Yield: 3.88%
With recent partnerships and acquisitions to keep it's drug pipeline healthy Pfizer's dividend should be secure for years to come. Drug companies have traditionally been used as safer income plays, especially in bad times, and Pfizer should be a decent holding for the foreseeable future.

British Petroleum Symbol: BP Price: $59.82 Dividend Yield: 5.62%
The nice yield here suggests the stock price may be a little low. Oil companies are known cash cows and. all green talk aside, they aren't going to disappear anytime soon. Consider BP if you want an energy based dividend play.

Emerson Electric: Symbol: EMR Dividend Yield: $43.78 Yield: 3.07%
A premier electrical parts supplier, a rising economy should keep earning rolling and the dividend secure.
Another of those companies to hold for an extended period.

Proctor & Gamble Symbol: P&G Price: $60.40 Dividend Yield: 2.92%
A leading maker of consumer goods, PG has been raising it's dividend annual for years. Increasing demand for American goods in foreign markets combined with a weak dollar suggest continued improvement and further dividend gains ahead.

I am blogging at you from Southern California.  My wife and I just arrived today after an early wake up call (4:45am) to catch a 7:30am flight out of New Orleans.  It’s been a long day of traveling but we are super excited for this year’s Beach Soccer Championships in Oceanside, California.  Last year’s tournament was great and this one I am sure will be even better.

The Beach Soccer tournament is May 15th and 16th and we are a sponsor/special guest of the tournament so will be marketing the Online Soccer Academy and College Recruiting Websites we build.  Check out BeachSoccerUSA.org for more information.  We came up early because we have a few other things going out in Cali this week.  I will be interviewing Edson Buddle and Sacha Kljestan at the Home Depot Center, filming an Online Soccer Academy “Beach Soccer” training video with one of the US Men’s National Team Beach Soccer players and we will also be hanging out with a lot of the Oceanside Breakers players and coaches, which is the local soccer club here in Oceanside we sponsor.

The video above is a goofy video of me introducing myself as a Cajun Beach soccer player to the Californians.  I made one last year too you can watch by clicking here.  What do you think my accent?  Think I have a shot at making the US Men’s National Team Beach Soccer team (LOL!)?

Great to be in Cali!  Al da Gator and I look forward to seeing everyone at the beach soon!

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010: Last Chapter

Fifa World Cup-AppModo by Appmodo

Werder Bremen Fussball Trikot kaufen

The Washington Freedom finished in third place in the seven-team Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league in 2009. Along the way, they thrilled their fans by scoring more goals than any other team in WPS—with Abby Wambach trailing only Brazilian-sensation Marta for the league's scoring lead. However, the Washington Freedom faltered defensively by also giving up more goals than any other WPS team. As the Washington Freedom gear up for their second WPS season in 2010, they maintain a solid core of stars supplemented by several key additions. As a Washington Freedom season ticket holder who previously shared highlights of the 2009 season, I am excited for the Washington Freedom to kick off the second WPS season on April 10, 2010.

Key Washington Freedom Holdovers from 2009:

More than perhaps any other WPS team, the Washington Freedom will keep a consistent core in 2010 from their first season's stars. U.S. national team stars forward Abby Wambach and defender Cat Whitehill, French sensation midfielder Sonia Bompastor, Japanese veteran midfielder Homare Sawa, and Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod are all returning to the Washington Freedom in 2010. While this consistency can help bolster team chemistry, several of these stars finished the 2009 season stronger than they began it, raising hopes for a stronger 2010 performance. For example, Abby Wambach started the 2009 season recovering from a severely broken leg and did not show her goal-scoring capacity fully until the last two months of the season; Homare Sawa played in a defensive midfielder position rather than her more natural playmaking midfield role; and Erin McLeod joined the team after about one-third of the season was completed due to delays in obtaining a work visa as she also recovered from injury. It may be hard for Sonia Bompastor to match her MVP season in 2009, but her speed, aggressiveness, and creative play will again bolster the Washington Freedom's attack. Further, other key starters gained important international experience as defender Becky Sauerbrunn played in Norway with new Washington Freedom signee Lene Mykjåland; midfielders Rebecca Moros and JoAnne Lohman trained in Japan with Homare Sawa; and defender Alex Singer played in Australia with Freedom forward Lisa de Vanna.

Key Washington Freedom Losses from 2009:

While most of the Washington Freedom's core players return in 2010, there were several losses. Midfielder Lori Lindsey, who was a veteran not only of the 2009 WPS Washington Freedom but earlier Freedom teams in the W-League, was one of the top picks by the new Philadelphia Independence in the WPS expansion draft. The expansion draft also saw rookie defender Sarah Senty go to Philadelphia. Freedom fans were also disappointed to hear that midfielder Ali Krieger renewed her contract with Frankfurt in the German women's soccer league. While Krieger may still be an option to play late in the season on loan to the Washington Freedom, she is unlikely to become a full-time player for the Freedom with her new German contract. Finally, other favorite Washington Freedom players will be missed, including veteran Emily Janss, who retired, and goalkeeper K.J. Spisak, who was released and hopefully can rejoin the Washington Freedom or another WPS team as a free agent.

Key Washington Freedom Gains from 2009:

The Washington Freedom will bolster their 2010 lineup with several key additions. The Washington Freedom signed Norwegian Lene Mykjåland, a 23-year-old forward who will add depth to the Freedom attack alongside Abby Wambach and perhaps afford Lisa de Vanna the opportunity to be a super substitute. This super substitute role, bringing additional speed and intensity late in games, is her typical role for the Australian national team. The Washington Freedom's top pick in the 2010 college draft was Nikki Marshall from the University of Colorado, a versatile player with experience both as a forward and defender. Marshall will hopefully solidify the Washington Freedom's defensive line while providing speed to also contribute to attacking plays. Finally, with the unfortunate news that the Los Angeles Sol would not return for a second WPS season in 2010, the Washington Freedom picked defender Brittany Bock from the Sol dispersal draft.

2010 will see the Washington Freedom again fielding a team that should compete for the WPS playoffs by finishing in the top half of the eight teams that WPS will field in 2010. While 2009 league leaders Los Angeles Sol have folded and dispersed their players across the league, two new teams, the Philadelphia Independence and Atlanta Beat, will join the WPS. The Washington Freedom have a solid core of returning players from their successful first season in 2009, and the additional experience of many key players along with a few important additions will hopefully serve them well in 2010.

c/o toxic2007 art The EPL, the Liga, and European soccer generally are guilty of fraud.

The World's Sport–Shame on Spain; or, Why the European Soccer System is Broken

At the end of this season of the Liga BBVA, one thing will be clear: Spanish soccer is guilty of fraud. We fans were promised a “league of stars,” called “the best league in the world” by most Spanish news sites–especially now, during Florentino Perez’s neo-galáctico era. We were promised a competitive, interesting display of wonderful soccer; we were promised a variety of interesting sub-plots, from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Madrid debut, to Valencia’s economic situation, to Messi’s comparisons to Maradona. Who promised us these things? The teams themselves, the system that creates matches; it is the LFP, the Liga BBVA’s purpose to create drama and entertainment, competition and beauty. It has failed.

What we have instead is a boring, broken system: on one hand we have a team that set the league record for points, and on the other a team that set the league record for wins (Barça and Madrid, respectively). We have a league devoid of competition, of drama–my great soccer idol, my hero, and my favorite player of all time, Zinedine Zidane said, “in my book, both teams are champions.” Yeah, they are. And we all lost because of it. We have suffered through a yearlong competition that has epitomized why the Spanish league is not the best in the world: to semi-quote Jeff Foxworthy (who has absolutely NO place near soccer), “If your entire yearlong league boils down to two matches, you MUST be boring.” It has become an inevitability that Real Madrid and Barcelona will win their matches; the only “drama” this terrible year has brought are the games between the two.

[ADDENDUM: This column was written before the last match of the year, but frankly at this point, even though I’m an extremely avid Real Madrid fan, I don’t care who wins. This year has been terribly boring on every front, including ours.]

I wrote a column back in November about why the Spanish league was better, more interesting, than the EPL–I argued that because of the large amount of variation in the top four teams in Spain, it necessarily means that the Spanish league is more competitive. This is wrong on several accounts: firstly, it semi-arbitrarily defines the league’s “competition” as the number of separate teams that have placed in the top four. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it focuses on the EPL’s “Top 4,” as opposed to Spain’s “Top 2,” asserting confidently that the EPL needs teams to come in and break the cycle of the Top 4 teams. When was the last time a team not named Barça or Madrid won the Spanish League? 2004.

But this isn’t a comparison piece on England and Spain–actually, the point of this article is that they both suck, just Spain slightly more so. What do you have when it’s only the same two teams competing year after year? No, the answer isn’t “good television”; the answer is Scotland. And that’s what Spanish soccer looks like right now. Spanish soccer–and I’m really just talking about the League, because the Copa is really a step down–is a microcosm for, and get this, the American political system. In modern Spanish soccer we have a physical representation of Duverger’s law of political parties, that all of us Poli-Sci people know so well–“the simple majority [winner take all], single-ballot system favors the two-party system and both the simple-majority system with second ballot and proportional representation favor multi-partism” (Maurice Duverger, Political Parties, ed.1954). Spanish soccer allows for neither a “second ballot,” nor “proportional representation”; thus, we repeat the same two teams over and over. I know this is a weak analogy, but I think it’s funny and especially pertinent, considering the absurd distance between Madrid/Barça and the rest of the league.

Honoring moms in other parts of the world can look strikingly different than Mother's Day celebrations in the US.

We celebrate Mother's Day honor and respect one of the most influential people in our lives. Most of us spend our formative years with our mothers, sharing the joys and sorrows that any childhood can bring. Such is the heroic nature of mothers, always trying to make us feel happy even in the worst of circumstances. The occasion of Mother's Day could be even more enjoyable if we added a mix of flavor and humor to it. We all have legendary mom stories. My most recent one actually involves a whole bunch of moms.

Last year, at 7:39 a.m. on the morning of April 30th, I was diagnosed with cancer. At around 7:40 a.m. on that same morning, my mother’s knitting group was called into action and ready to heal. Rochelle Zohn, like Paul Revere, was seen drinking her coffee, speeding in her white Volvo and rallying her troops as if she was a revolutionary war hero galloping through the streets of Lexington to alert the sleeping Minutemen that the British were coming. As you can imagine, a frenzy of activity ensued, and the “knit heard around the world” was enough to excite my mom's talented needle twirlers to whip up 12 beautiful hats for my newly bald head. It was instantly clear that this particular group of moms had never really knit for anyone other than their cute little grandchildren. Who would have thought that a 36-year-old man living in New York City would look so good in pink and blue striped hats the size of grapefruits? It was the thought that counted and my cancer is in remission. Perhaps knit one, pearl one is really the key to the cure.

No one can deny that Mother’s Day is a beautiful tradition ripe with flowers, hugs and the occasional family debate over the perfect brunch spot. And, it’s comforting to know that our biggest decisions for the day are usually scrambled or sunny side-up; Mimosa or Bellini. The qualities that make a great mother are universal: care, support, strength and selflessness are all values that are appreciated anywhere in the world. However, in many countries, the typical mother’s day looks strikingly different, if there is any celebration at all.

In Sierra Leone women are often forgotten about and considered lower class citizens. During the civil war they bore the brunt of atrocities, their lives disrupted by sexual violence, slave labor and other horrific acts. Women still suffer from these traumatic experiences and fight to regain their position in society. A celebration honoring mothers does not exist. The concept of an entire day devoted to them may never be considered. That’s why Play31 has launched the Soccer Mom’s Day Campaign. Play31 utilizes the unifying power of soccer to bring together people who have been torn apart by armed conflict. By facilitating community gatherings and donating balls they contribute to the creation of peaceful societies where boys and girls can exercise their right to play.

The campaign is simple: you donate $20 for a soccer ball or $40 to sponsor a Sierra Leone player and receive a gift certificate, which you can give to your mother, or to someone you know who is a mother. Play31 also created the first all-female soccer teams in Sierra Leone, giving hundreds of women a chance to represent their communities on the fields. When I spoke to Play31 founder and CEO, Jakob Lund, he shared one of his most cherished memories, “from working with Play31 the sight of Tambateko’s female team running into the field for their first match all glowing with pride was amazing. To see these women represent their communities on the football (soccer) field with the backing of everyone around them, thousands of fans cheering, gives me great joy and it is obvious that while football is certainly fun, it can also be serious business.”

So serious, in fact, that one woman from Kailahun who was raped during the war and hadn't seen the perpetrator since, spotted the man at one of the soccer games. Naturally, very upset she told her confidants from her community and they contacted the man to resolve this conflict. The very next day, they all sat down under the village's Peace Tree and here the man explained to the woman and her entire community how he had been abducted. He was brainwashed and forced into the rebel movement (RUF). Lund mentions, “he told them how he still had nightmares about things he did in the war and every day he regrets the crimes he committed. He ended up begging the woman for forgiveness, which she granted him.”

Play31 can bring people together through something that is very fun — the Beautiful Game — and that can lead to meaningful, life changing events like reconciliation and healing. If you would like to celebrate a mother you know on Mother’s Day, while also supporting mothers and daughters in Sierra Leone, please pick up your Soccer Mom’s Day gift certificate today.

Russland Trikots

As soccer mom extraordinaire, you outfit your little ones shin guards and soccer cleats, toss a couple of soccer balls in the back of the minivan and go to recreation soccer practices and games. Lo and behold, your little one's showing some skill. You're now participating in the competitive town league and perhaps the advanced regional programs… your little soccer player's kicking some butt. Time to bump it one more level….club soccer. But before diving in and forking over hundreds of dollars, consider the following items to be sure club soccer, and the club if you decide go this route, is right for you.

1. Commitment: If your little soccer player gets an invite to a friends house during practice time, will they attend practice? If the answer is no, or if it's yes, but only if you drag them kicking and screaming, stick with town and recreation soccer.

2. Distance: Get that minivan warmed up and …unless the designated practice field is in your town, the drive to practice is probably longer – and some of the games are much further away. For me the longest trek to a club game was ~ 2 hours (the longest for a town team was 40 min – but only because I got lost).

3. Coaching philosophy: Although all clubs (at least in theory) are competitive, some stress development and others stress winning. Neither is wrong, but your expectations should align to their goals. Talk to the Club director; ask how this club differs from the others you're considering.

4. Skill level potential team mates: If your soccer player's the best on the team, they won't develop as much as they would if they were playing with more skilled players – and after all, that is what you're paying for. If they are the worst on the team, they may feel overwhelmed and get discouraged. You can get a good feel for the skills of the team at try-outs or by attending any summer or preseason clinics given by the club.

5. Contract commitment: Do you have to lock in for the entire year – or is the club willing to work with you if there are problems after the first season. From the club's point of view you can understand that they need to hire coaches and get fields for the year. But from your point of view, is it reasonable to lock young kids in for that length of time? (Let's face it, they (kids in general) have the attention span of a gnat) And what if you feel the club is not living up to your expectations? Be sure you feel you can talk with he head coach so they are aware of your concerns and can work with you.

6. Cost: I listed this item last because if the commitment and skill are there, you're happy with coaching, and you're comfortable working with the club, there are ways to decrease the total cost. For instance if you manage the team or help the club out, you usually receive some type of discount. There's fundraising. Or you can always go to the club director and plead your case for a scholarship. But anyway you work it, it's a significant factor.

As a soccer mom, you want your little soccer player to go as far as they want to go. If your soccer player's committed and you've gone through the items in the above list, a soccer club is worth the time, money, and gas you spend on it.

Under the hood, General Motors (GM owns Chevrolet and Holden) announced that the Caprice will have a 6.0-liter LS2 V8 engine rated at an estimated 355 HP and 384 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed auto transmission. Power output compares favorably to the 340 HP HEMI in the Dodge Charger police edition and absolutely blows away the Ford Crown Vic's 250 HP 4.6-liter V8.

The new Chevy uses the longest wheelbase version of the Zeta platform (the platform that the WM Grange is based on) — 118.5″ — making it almost four inches longer than the 114.7″ wheelbase VRX8. If that bigger-than-VRX8 number sounds familiar, it should — it's the same length as the Holden VE Ute, the Holden Caprice, the HSV Grange, the Middle Eastern Chevy Caprice and the Pontiac “El Camino” G8 ST.

Content 1: The South African and the German Team already announced their delegations. Of course they will send full teams for their participation at the 2nd World Championships 2010. You could find the names of players and delegation members at their specific homepages. The South African Team already arrives one week before the opening of the World Championships. They will visit the German locations Oer-Erkenschwick, Recklinghausen and Neuwied in order to test against teams from German provinces Westfalia and Middle Rhineland before they transfer to Koblenz. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the USA are currently busy with selecting their delegation members. Viviane Pekelman confirmed that Brazil is busy with preparing their trip to Germany in detail now.

Content 2: The General Meeting of the World Tenniquoits Federation will meet at Thursday, the 5th of August at the Sporthalle Oberwerth Arena in Koblenz during the World Championships.
Each National Committee is called to bring proposals according rule changes or others to the Secretary General right in time. Only with this it will be possible to create a proper agenda for this meeting. The following proposals have already been placed at the bureau of the WTF: 1. Changing Matches from Time- to Set-System, 2. Implementation of European and Asian Championships, 3. Determination of a concrete procedure to become member of the GAISF(Sportaccord) and World Games Organisation. We must come steps forward to make our sport much more interesting for people and media. This has priority in future. The success of Tenniquoits is lying in our hands, we have to get more active and think about helpful methods to reach a higher degree of popularity for our sport.

Content 3: Another point of discussion at the World Championships will be the unification of the World Tenniquoits Federation with the International Ringo Federation. The advantage to unify both federations is, that we nearly could double our member federations. You must know that we need 40 member federations to be accepted at the GAISF and World Games Organisation. We can profit from working together and establish Ringo and Tenniquoits as two disciplines within one international body. This new unified international body could be named World Netring Association for example. We have more potential. Let us do the best for the sports with a ring…

Content 4: Attached you find a picture of the Word Championships medal, which you will fight for in Koblenz. Hope that will give you a great taste and impetus for the coming weeks of preparation.

Content 5: Don’t forget to prepare necessary documents for your trip to Germany right in time. Those who need visas, should apply for it right in time.

Only 91 days left till we meet in Germany….

2010 World Cup: History of the World Cup

Frauen Fußball Weltmeisterschaft 2007™ by pixelpope

Karlsruher SC Trikot kaufen

If you’re just getting acquainted with international soccer, here is a brief look at 10 of the greatest stars in the history of the World Cup.  As much as soccer is a team sport, one player can catch fire and change the course of the tournament.

Oliver Kahn – Germany
Kahn became the first goalkeeper to win the Golden Ball (Most Valuable Player) award at the 2002 Cup in Korea and Japan. He led the Germans by surrendering just one goal during the tournament until the final match.  Kahn, who plays regularly for Bayern Munich, hopes to capture his first World Cup as Germany hosts the event this year.

Ronaldo – Brazil
When Brazil won the 2002 World Cup, it was Ronaldo who scored twice against Germany’s Oliver Kahn in the final match. Ronaldo racked up eight goals in the tournament to win the Golden Shoe (Top Scorer) award.  Ronaldo was also part of Brazil’s Cup-winning team in 1994, and his 12 career Cup goals tied Pele for the most in the history of the Brazilian team.

Diego Maradona – Argentina
Maradona scored five goals to help Argentina capture the 1986 Cup in Mexico.  He went on to play in Italy for the Napoli team. At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Maradona battled through an ankle injury to help Argentina to a second-place finish.

Paolo Rossi – Italy
Rossi made his World Cup debut in 1978 at age 21.  His three goals and two assists led Italy to a fourth place finish. Four years later, Rossi scored three more goals in a victory over Brazil to put the Italians in the final four.  Rossi kept going with two goals against Poland and one against Germany, as Italy won the 1982 Cup in Spain.

Gerd Muller – Germany
Muller was simply the greatest goal scorer of all time. He holds several records, with 365 goals in the German league (Bundesliga), 68 in international competition and 14 in the World Cup.  “The Bomber” scored a tournament-best 10 goals in 1970 as the West Germans finished third. He also scored the Cup-winning goal in 1974 against the Netherlands.

Pele – Brazil
Pele’s innovative, exciting style of play transformed the game of soccer. He was part of three of Brazil’s World Cup winning teams in 1958, 1962 and 1970.  Pele was only 17 when he scored three goals in the 1958 semifinals against France and two more in the final victory over Sweden.

Eusebio – Portugal
Born in Mozambique, the “Black Panther” was so named for his cat-like dribbling prowess. Eusebio scores nine goals in the 1966 Cup tournament.  Four of those goals came in the quarterfinals, as Portugal erased a 3-0 to stun North Korea. Eusebio also played on 11 national championship teams in Portugal.

Mario Kempes – Argentina
Kempes was instrumental in Argentina’s first World Cup victory in 1978. He scored twice in victories over Peru, Poland and in the final game over The Netherlands. Kempes later played for clubs in Austria, Chile, Indonesia and Spain.

Dino Zoff – Italy
Zoff was outstanding as goalkeeper for Italy’s 1982 World Cup-winning team. He competes in three World Cups and compiled a streak of 1,142 minutes without surrendering a goal.  Zoff went on to be a coach for several Italian teams from 1988-2001.

Fritz Walter – Germany
The native of Kaiserslautern restored German pride after World War II, leading his nation to a 3-2 upset victory over Hungary in 1954.  His hometown stadium is named after him and is a host venue for the 2006 World Cup.

“There was still a lot of time left, so it felt even better to get that second goal to seal the deal and get the win,” added Falvey.

The Irish's second half output was a stark contrast from their play in the first.

“After the first five minutes of the first half, I don't know where our energy went,” said Gabriel Richard coach Matt Carrol, whose team was out-shot 7-4 in the opening frame. “We felt like Skyline was really dominating the play in the last 20-25 minutes of the first half.”

In the second half, however, the Fighting Irish commanded the shot difference, 8-3, including seven on the Eagle's net.

“I thought we came out much more composed in the second half,” continued Carroll, “and spread the ball evenly to both the left side and the right side — we were really jamming down the right side of the field in the first half.”

“I think that allowed us to spread Skyline out a little bit and create some gaps to get some open opportunitites to shoot that maybe weren't there in the first half.”

For Skyline, dominating play in the first half with no goals to show for it — despite relentless pressure and crossing-passes in front of GR's net — appeared to drain the Eagle's second-half energy.

“It was a tale of two halves,” admitted Skyline coach Chris Morgan. “We tuck a couple balls, put a couple away and it's a different second half.”

“We kept giving them life. Every close opportunity just gave them more and more wind.”

Keeping Skyline's head above water as long as she could was goalkeeper Tori Norris, who finished with seven saves, including a pair of out-stretched deflections late in the second half.

Earning the shutout for Gabriel Richard (3-2-2) was Anna Zekany, who had two saves.

The loss is the first for Skyline (3-1) this season.

“This is the first game that we've actually been pushed, so it's good for us. We'll take a lot away from this,” noted Morgan.

The world's most famous soccer player is coming to America! Starting this year, David Beckham will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Beckham is a pop culture icon. He's famous for his looks, his wife Victoria, and his commercial appeal. And yes, he even has a movie named after him – “Bend It Like Beckham”.

Is it time to celebrate? Do you even care or watch soccer at all? Like I said before, Soccer is seen as a second class sport in this part of the world. If you live in North America, chances are you probably don't watch a single soccer game throughout the year (as evidenced by the 0.6 ratings MLS receives on the ABC and ESPN network). And I bet you don't even know who won the MLS Championship last year either.

MLS is supposed to be the premier professional soccer league in North America. Founded in 1993, the league has faced constant challenges, including low TV ratings, decreasing attendance and ownership problems. According to Business Week, the league has lost $350 million dollars since its inception. By signing Beckham to a five year package worth $250 million dollars, MLS has garnered media attention that it would otherwise not receive. It's also been reported that Beckham's endorsers will be paying a majority of his retainer fee rather than the league. he is “only” 31 which is old for soccer. Yes he was kicked off the English National team and was not being played by R. Madrid. His $50 million a year is his salary. It does not include any endorsements. Tiger earns about $6 million from playing golf the rest is endorsements.

But will this hefty investment pay off in the long run? A lot depends on TV ratings. It's pretty obvious that MLS has failed to capitalize on building momentum in the USA. Major sponsors have been reluctant to invest in any league with low TV ratings and little fanfare. Plus, soccer has nowhere near the amount of television breaks that other professional sports provide (NFL, MLB, NBA, etc). Soccer is known as the “World's Game”. And there will always be a dedicated following in North America. But if Beckham fails to capture the mainstream audience (you know, the people who pay the bills), his contract may end up as a costly mistake. During the 1970's, the North American Soccer League (NASL) tried a similar move by signing over the hill stars to expensive contracts. After a few successful seasons, the NASL folded in 1984. We do not know what the end result will be, but we can only speculate, but I do know one thing, Mrs. “Becks” will love living in L.A.

It’s Friday, so it must be World Cup preview podcast time again. This week we look at Group F, which features Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay, Slovakia. Your four co-hosts debate the merits of each team in various categories (some serious: Best Coach, some not so much: Best Celebrity Spokesperson) and then add up the points to see which two teams go through.

This sixth episode of the Total Football Soccer Show’s World Cup previews was originally broadcast Thursday, April 22nd on WRIR 97.3, and is now available as a podcast. Questions raised include: Does Ricki Herbert sleep? Did Marcello Lippi play for Wolves? Why won’t Robert Carlos apologize for Brazil’s actions in the 19th century?

So… Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay, Slovakia. Which two of these these four fine football teams will make the grade? I can’t tell you that, but I can tell you that there’s a dramatic finale featuring a tie-braker to decide who takes second place. Click play below to listen.

Last year's dismal performance in World Cup by the United States caused many heads drop and may have hurt the growth the sport's increased popularity in America. The more focused result was the sacking of head coach, Bruce Arena, and a revamping of the U.S. roster by the new head coach, Bob Bradley.

The United States entered Germany '06 with high expectations after much success with Bruce Arena at the helm. Arena coached the team to regional championships in the Gold Cups 2002 and 2005. He oversaw their stunning go at the World Cup in 2002 when the team was ousted by Germany in the round of eight.

These high expectations were certainly warranted after the team qualified for the World Cup after plowing through the final round of qualification with six wins in seven matches, the only loss was to Mexico at Azteca. The U.S. was the first team to qualify from the region and finished ahead of regional rival, Mexico.

However, the team composed heavily of World Cup 2002 veterans struggled during friendly matches in 2006 against opponents such as Morocco, Germany, and Jamaica. Twelve members of the 23-man roster were currently playing in Europe, and the team failed miserably against both the Czech Republic and Ghana. American fans were devastated.

Not long after Bruce Arena had become the coach for Red Bull New York, it became clear that the faces of the U.S. National Team would change. Brian McBride, Eddie Pope, and Claudio Reyna all announced their retirements from international play, and Bob Bradley, then coach of Chivas USA, was named the interim head coach for the U.S. National Team.

Bob Bradley faced a mighty challenge. He needed to turn the team around and do so quickly because summer 2007 was rapidly approaching with the Gold Cup and Copa America on the team's schedule. In June, the U.S. will look to defend its regional championship in the Gold Cup and will then spend July in Venezuela for Copa America, South America's championship, which will feature both the U.S. and Mexico.

In his four matches as interim head coach, Bradley managed to earn three wins and a draw. Although the win against Denmark was against a depleted team whose stars were busy playing in Bundeliga and Premier League matches that weekend, the victories over Mexico and Ecuador were important for preparing the team for their upcoming matches.

Like his predecessor, Bradley will rely on importing U.S. talent from the European clubs, especially because they are entering their off-season. However, thus far, Bradley has not relied on the veteran players; instead, he has called in a number of un-capped, young American players, who have played well.

The Gold Cup roster will feature five English Premier League players: Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC), Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham FC), Jay DeMerit (Watford- recently relegated), Tim Howard (Everton) and John Spector (West Ham); also joining the list of yanks abroad are: Frank Simek (Sheffield Wednesday, English Championship), Damarcus Beasley (who recently spent a season with Manchester City but has returned to Eindhoven), Oguchi Onyewu (who spent part of the season with Newcastle but has returned to Stan. Liege) Michael Bradley (SC Heerenveen), Kasey Keller (Monchengladbach- recently relegated), and Benny Feilhaber (Hamburg SV reserves).

The most remarkable thing about this roster is the age difference between Bradley's team and Arena's team. Bruce Arena relied heavily on players who were pushing thirty. Bob Bradley's team, although not as experienced in international competitions, relies more on the future of the U.S. National Team. This roster is closer to twenty than thirty.

Bradley applied the same strategy when scouting the players in the MLS. Players like Jonathan Bornstein, Ricardo Clark, and Brad Guzan will have the opportunity to play along side some of players they will one day replace such as: Frankie Hejduk, Pablo Mastroeni, and Kasey Keller.

The infusion of youth into the roster is the smartest move that Bob Bradley has made. Young players like Justin Mapp, Michael Bradley, and Benny Feilhaber act without over-thinking. Youth may lead to careless mistakes, but it will also prevent the overly cautious play which was on display last summer.

A number of Americans soccer fans may be disappointed to not see Eddie Pope or Eddie Lewis on the roster, but there should be excitement around these players first big appearances for the national team. Consider it a chance to get a preview of what could be during World Cup 2010.

Come June, the U.S. will find itself in a group of four with Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Moving out of this group into the knock-out round should not be a heavy burden, but that's when the task to defend the title will become difficult. Mexico and Costa Rica are the favorites to move out their respective groups, and both have proven to be fierce competition in the past.

The American's first knock-out game, assuming they finish first in their respective group, will likely be against Panama or Haiti, as Honduras and Canada are likely the favorites to take the second spots in their own groups.

Despite the best efforts from Brondby star and former-MLSer, Jean Phillipe-Peguero, and Atletico Madrid midfielder, Frantz Bertin, the odds of the Caribbean champions getting the better of a Canadian side with Lars Hirshfield (Rosenborg), Atiba Hutchinson (Kopenhaven), Paul Stalteri (Spurs), Daniel Imhof (Bochum), and Kevin McKenna (Cottbus) aren't particularly good. This will be the best Canadian team ever assembled for the Gold Cup.

Panama may find themselves in a similar situation when facing Honduras. With two players in Italy's Seria A: David Suazo and Edgar Alvarez, Honduras will likely have the advantage, especially with the form Suazo demonstrated all season trying to carry Cagliari on his back. Suazon managed to tally 22 goals for his club during the 2006 season. Honduras will also rely on other players overseas including Maynor Suazo (Antalyaspor, Turkey), Amado Guevara (MLS), Ivan Guerrero (MLS), and Samuel Caballero (China).

Panama's one saving grace might be their young goalkeeper, Jaime Penedo, who plays for Osasuna in Spain. Baloy will have to hold down the fort in the back, as he does for Monterrey in Liga Mexicana, and the team's two attackers in the Colombian league, Blas Perez and Roman Torres, will have to find the back of the net if Panama has any hope of finishing higher than third in their group.

The round of eight will likely see the U.S., Costa Rica, Mexico, and Honduras survive into the semi-finals; however, there is a very real chance that the Canadians could take the fourth spot in place of the Hondurans, so long as they can find a way to score. With the U.S. likely facing Costa Rica and Mexico meeting Honduras in the semi's; there is a very real chance of the young Americans coming up short against a Costa Rica side, which heavily consists of Saprissa players.

On the other end of the semi's, Mexico is likely the favorite. In fact, the Mexican National Team is the odds-on favorite to win the whole the thing. After being ousted early during the last Gold Cup, the Mexicans will likely bring an A-class roster, which will include Osorio and Pardo, who are coming off a Bundesliga Championship with Stuttgart. With Salcido (Eindhoven) and Marquez (Barcelona) joining Osorio in the back, this will be an incredibly tough team to beat, in both Copa America and the Gold Cup.

The real feast for most soccer fans begins in the following month with Copa America. Some roster adjustments will likely be made by both the Mexican National Team and the U.S. National Team, as they will face the toughest teams in the world like Brazil and Argentina.

Both the U.S. and Mexico managed to pick unfavorable draws, as neither team ended up in Group A, which is likely the weakest set of teams in the tournament. Mexico, however, has a very real chance of moving into the knock-out rounds, so long as the team can post a win against Ecuador.

Brazil is the clear favorite in said group and will likely have Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Robinho on the roster. They may also call up more unexpected players like: Lincoln (Shalke), Rafinha (Schalke), Vagner Love (Moscow), and Fred (Lyon). No mather who they call in, Brazil is the clear favorite to win their group.

The U.S. was placed in a group with Argentina, Colombia, and Paraguay. Both Paraguay and Argentina played amazingly well in the 2004 Olympics, and Argentina managed to continue such form into World Cup '06. Niether side is a joke.

With Paraguay's lead attackers Santa Cruz and Paredes playing along side Cuevas and Dos Santos, the combinaton of Euro-based attackers and Club America attackers will prove to be a lethal combination. However, with a defense based heavily in Europe, especially with experience in the Premier League, the U.S. should stand a good chance of weathering the storm.

The big “must win” for the U.S. wil come against the Colombian National Team, which seems to see a fair amount of turn over. With most of their current roster based in the domestic league or in Liga Mexicana, this is the opponent, which the U.S. has the best chance of beating. However, it must be noted the attacking skills of players in Colombian league are very strong. The biggest concern for the Americans will be Luis Gabriel Rey of Mexico's Morelia, but Colombia could be the dark horse in the group.

Argentina and Brazil are the heavy favorites in Copa America, and fans all over the world will want to tune-in to catch match-ups like Ronaldinho vs. Messi, Carlos Tevez vs. Robinho, and Javier Mascherano vs. Gilberto Silva. This match would have made the ultimate World Cup match last year, and with the latest edition of Copa America it could become a reality.

Perhaps this summer isn't quite as exciting as its predecessor, but international tournament action promises to be exciting. For American soccer fans it will be the first opportunity to have a look at the team of the future and see them play against some of the best teams in the world. Summer '07 promises to be an excellent soccer showcase.

With the release of the highly anticipated USA home jersey at the end of this month (May 29th to be exact), it only makes sense that we take a look at the historic “miracle on grass” which the new jersey draws inspiration from. While we can't show you pictures yet due to strict rules from Nike (if you really want to see the jersey Click Here), I can promise you the new USA home jersey to be worn during the World Cup is white and looks very similar to that worn by the 1950 World Cup squad.

If you aren't familiar with the “miracle on grass”, let's have a bit of a history lesson. Heading into the 1950 World Cup England considered themselves “Kings of Football” with an impressive post-war record of 23 wins, 4 losses and 3 draws. On the flip side of the coin, the Americans were downright awful, having lost their last seven in a row by a combined score of 45-2. If you're a betting man, the odds were 3-1 for England to bring home the World Cup compared to 500-1 for the Yanks.

When we look at this story, we have to keep in mind that soccer was very new to the United States. Most players on the American team were semi-pros and had other jobs to support their families. The rag tag American squad was assembled so late that they were only able to scrimmage as a complete team once before leaving for Brazil.

While the Americans looked destined for doom in Brazil, the English side sported the worlds best player in Stanley Matthews. Surprisingly, he was left out of the side facing the USA due to his absence from three previous international matches after joining the team late. Believe it or not, back during these times there was no substitutions allowed.

When the game actually kicked off, England came flying out of the gates. Within twelve minutes, England had recorded six clear shots on goal but had failed to convert. Like often is the case, England would come to regret the lack of finishing during that stretch. In the 37th minute, USA's Joe Gaetjens got a glancing header to William Bahr's long range shot which wrong footed English goalkeeper Bert Williams. The crowd exploded as the American took a shock lead into the break.

The second half saw the USA play with a new found confidence, creating a few more scoring opportunities. Eventually the USA survived a late penalty scare (a foul was controversially judged to be outside the box) and held on for the improbably victory.

The fairy tale World Cup was quickly stamped out as the USA lost their remaining matches and failed to qualify for the next round. Even so, the USA victory over England in 1950 is still seen as the biggest upset in soccer history.

Nike has reached back to that glorious day for inspiration in designing the new USA jerseys for World Cup 2010 in South Africa. While the USA Away jersey is already out sporting the diagonal sash, the home jersey will bear the same design but in white with a light grey sash.

Pre-Order your new USA Home Jersey on May 29th at SoccerFanatic.com and relive this historic occassion.

If you know nothing about Brazil you surely know at least that most Brazilians have a passion for soccer. That feeling goes to the highest levels of intensity when final games are taking place in states championships held every year. The fact is soccer is sure the national game of Brazil.

A Little Background – Sao Paulo State 2008 cup finals

It is hard to write about an event such as the final games of the Sao Paulo State cup The Paulistao as it is called. As you will read bellow. The anxiety is too big on both side but, the story for the Campinas (Campinas in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil) people is some what more dramatic.

A City's Passion for Soccer and Its 100-Year-Old Team

Ponte Preta is 108 years old, the club was started on August 6, 1900, the oldest team of the state and yet it has never won a cup. Many finals, many second places, but the taste of bringing home the trophy is still to be felt by its fans.

    The games

Palmeiras and Ponte Preta met last month for the first of two games of the final of the Sao Paulo state championship (April 27). Palmeiras has maybe more fans than the city of Campinas has inhabitants, figuratively speaking. Palmeiras is the team from the capital of the state of Sao Paulo with large salaries, stars, and all infra-structure – against the country side team, that is Ponte Preta. A game fight like David against Goliath.

I went then on through the streets of Campinas from the early morning up to the game into Moises Lucarelli stadium and after while people where going home documenting that passion and the forms it takes.

    The fans

Prior to the game Ponte's fans were already in front of their stadium cheering and having a great time. TVs and radio networks all ready to transmit the game did prey on those fans for material for routine insertions and comments. I confess I did the same.

Many people go to the game on foot here. On the streets cheerful fans showed their love for the game and their team. Ponte Preta's mascot is, as you can tell from the photo beside, a monkey and Palmeira is a parrot. Of course in the streets of Campinas you would not see a parrot walking around, maybe not even flying. It would be too dangerous.

The police work was very efficient and no major event or violence happened, but I tell you what there were police officers all over the place. All fans were searched upon entering the stadium, each group entered by a different gate and inside they were kept in very separate places. It worked.

The press from all over the state came to cover the event and I went after some sport commentator to check what the prospects were for the match in their expert opinion check the video below with Mr Celso Cardoso and Mr Felipe his producer, both from TV Gazeta minutes before the game.

Look for Interview with TV Gazeta journalist Mr Celso Cardoso here at AC.

They agreed that it would be very, very difficult for Ponte Preta to win against Palmeiras, but it is a game and it takes 90 minutes and everything can happen, Mr Cardoso affirmed. Check at Youtube (the video is not very good, but audio is ok)

Well, the first game ended as the experts predicted Palmeiras 1 and Ponte Preta 0, the next game would be in Sao Paulo May 4th, the following weeked, what they call here the return game and now the task would be even more difficult for Ponte Preta must score 2 to nil to win the 2008 championship. The next Sunday I followed it all to witness who would win, Palmeiras or Ponte Preta — David or Goliath!

Still it was not time for Ponte Preta to conquer the Paulistao. In August, Ponte Preta will be 108 years old. Hopes were high in the city for the Monkey, as Ponte is called, to bring home her first state title.

    May 4y the last game

Minutes before the game and during the first half I cycled around to take some shots. Many people in Brazil (not only in Campinas where the pictures were taken) like to go to bars to sit among friends, drink, eat some snacks and watch the game. Check images on the side.

Not many bars were open; I was surprised. For Ponte to win today they needed to score two or more goals over Palmeiras. Many fans were not very confident especially because Ponte was now going to play in Sao Paulo at Parque Antartica, its opponent's house.

Everything can happen in soccer but the superb championship played by Palmeiras was too much against the odds. Palmeiras won 15 games, including its final 2, lost only 4 and went even 0 to 0 in another 4. Well, this time Goliath made it happen; poor David did not have a chance. Before the first 30 minutes of game were covered, Palmeiras was already two goals ahead of Ponte Preta. In the end, Palmeiras defeated Ponte Preta 5 to 0.

So Palmeiras is the 2008 Paulistao Champion. The truth really is that Ponte Preta made a great tournament. With much less money to invest and no big names in its team, the Monkey went really far and deserves to be applauded for that.

Journalists from TV Bandeirantes (BAND) were working in front of Ponte's stadium. They were waiting to see if the fans would show up to celebrate. It did not happen. A trend of Brazilian culture does show up, something we are trying and need to learn better – but still second place and nothing is the same around here.

Teasing a Trend of Brazilian Soccer Fans
(This part was first published at OMNI – there you may see more pictures)

There are some trends about Brazilian sports fans, soccer fans especially, that are somewhat remarkable. Like the one pointed out above. Another strong one, which looks like a need, is to mock the opponent team's fans and team.

As you read before, the 2008 state champion was determined between two finalists: one from the capital of the state Sao Paulo and the other from the countryside. The team from the capital is a big club and the other one – although the oldest club in the state — is much smaller.

Thousands of people in the city were cheering for Ponte Preta (or just Ponte), but not everybody in Campinas was sad it lost to Palmeiras. Campinas is a large city and, of course, there are other teams. The archrival of the Monkey (Ponte's nickname) was once champion of the Brazilian cup. So the Guarani Futebol Clube does have the right to boast a star on top of the team coat.

On the picture of Ponte's team you see a banner where you may read literally “It is possible.” Back on the first game I already had it in mind to write on the large differences between these two teams and what a good surprise it was to find that banner there on the field. It came across like a glove for this article in which I set Palmeiras as Goliath and Ponte as David, from the famous biblical fight.

Well, the colors of Guarani are almost exactly the same as those of Palmeiras — basically green and white — and since Campinas is a countryside city, many fans have actually two teams, one from the major leagues and a local one; or better, one from the capital and the local one. You don't need to know much about soccer to guess rightly that most fans from Guarani are also fans of, or at least have more admiration for, Palmeiras than they would for the local rival in such a game.

Proof of that is what I found on the streets and squares of Campinas, hanging in trees, light poles and so on. I took a picture so you can see for yourself below. (beside)

To tease Pontipretanos (Ponte Preta's fans) and for the amusement of many the large banners are hung all over. In the banner, there's a message on top that says, “Guarani the only champion of Campinas,” and the one below, “Not all is possible!” Beside also you may see a banner set in a T-shirt wore by Joao Queiroz from Campinas a big fan of Guarani, many other fans are doing so.

    Pay back

From what heard, Guarani is facing financial problems and will have to sell its stadium to solve tax, salary and other debts. They expect and most probably will also build a new stadium somewhere else in Campinas. If that happens the payback is surely on its way. Creativity for that Brazilians do not lack.

Nobody is dead yet so it is OK so far. Let's hope it stays like this — just fun for fans.

Important note to fans: There are not taking sides here! This whole article is about the game, the passion for it, the teasing and the mocking trends that exists among soccer fans – is a fact, that is the pointy here. You may put on your comments, state what you think about it all, that is great, you are welcome to participate. But, please, avoid low level language and swear words, kids read this articles. Thank you very much.

The FIFA president, who faced questions about South Africa's readiness to host the tournament, said he was confident the event would be a success and predicted that more than 95 percent of tickets will be sold.

Blatter brushed off suggestions that as a developing country South Africa was a bad choice to host the World Cup, saying the African continent deserved to host the event because of all that it has given world soccer.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke, who is responsible for overseeing the tournament, said South Africa was so well prepared it could start it “tomorrow.”

None of the 300,000 remaining tickets will be given away, said Valcke, adding that sales over the past eight days indicated all remaining seats will be sold before the first match.

But he acknowledged that “we have to work on our ticketing” after initial sales were sluggish and organizers were forced to cut prices to encourage South Africans to attend.

Valcke also said FIFA was pleased that many airlines had scheduled additional flights to bring the 360,000 spectators expected to make their way to South Africa.

Blatter said the South African team could bring together the country's different ethnic groups, especially if the home squad reaches the semifinals.

Asked about the risk of the World Cup being disrupted by unforeseen events such as last week's volcano eruption in Iceland, which grounded most European airlines, Blatter said even FIFA is “absolutely without any weapons against that,” despite the $1 billion reserve for emergencies.
