Whether you are completely new to horses or just to Arabians, you may find yourself looking at the names in your new horse's pedigree with a bit of bewilderment. Here are some explanations of some of the things you might see on your horse's pedigree and how to find further information on specific horses.

If you have your horse's certificate of registration with the Arabian Horse Association (AHA), you'll usually see the horse's name in the center with a tree of names leading off behind it. On top is the sire (father) and bottom the dam (mother). Underneath the name is usually the birth year of the horse, the color, and the registration number. Colors are: B = bay, C = chestnut, G = grey, W = white, and K = black.

You might come across a horse with an asterisk (*) in front of their name such as *Raffles. This symbol simply indicates that the horse was imported to the United States from another country.

The horse might also have symbols after this name such as +, ++, +/, +++, +//, ++++. This would look like Winraff ++ or Khemosabi ++++. These symbols are not part of their name, but signify achievement awards the horse has received. When enrolled in an achievement program through AHA, the horse gather points by competing and placing in Arabian shows, endurance events, dressage, and more. For each set amount of points the horse accumulates, they are awarded a symbol starting with the Legion of Honor (+). It then goes to a Legion of Merit (++), Legion of Supreme Honor (+/), Legion of Supreme Merit (+++), Legion of Excellence (+//), and Legion of Masters (++++).

As you look through the pedigree you might see several horses with the same beginning name or same set of initials in front of or behind a name. This is a common practice in Arabian breeding that the breeder of the horse names the horse with their barn name or initials. Some farms such as Al-Marah Arabians may use either their farm name in the case of Al-Marah Ibn Indraff or the initials in the case of AM Sea Captain.

You may notice many horses with names that include Ibn or Bint. These do not follow the above with being associated with a farm or person. Instead Ibn means “son of” and Bint means “daughter of”.

To start researching your horse's pedigree, the internet is a great resource. Try searching for the farm that bred your horse, your horse's name, names of parents, grandparents, and further back. Also if you know the breeder or owner of horses in the pedigree try searching for them. There is a wealth of information on the internet, unfortunately some of it is incorrect so double check things if possible.

Get a subscription to the Arabian Datasource. The Arabian Datasource is the online studbooks for AHA. Through this you can find past owners of your horse (as long as they transferred registration to their name), search for progeny, show records, extended pedigrees, siblings, and more. It also contains some pictures.

Look for old Arabian magazines such as Arabian Horse World, Arabian Horse Times, Arabian Visions, Arabian Horse Journal, and the Arabian Horse News. The January issues of the older Arabian Horse Worlds contained what was called the “Foto Finish” a listing of all the horses that appeared the previous year in any issue of the Arabian Horse World. The Arabian Horse News are wonderful as they contain many horses you might not see in many of the bigger publications and also date back farther than the other magazines. Only caution with the Arabian Horse News is that there are often misprints on identification of pictures.

Old show catalogs for shows such as Scottsdale or the Nationals often featured pictures of horses. Also old sales catalogs feature many horses you might not otherwise find and information such as show wins and more. Check places like Ebay or used bookstores for many of these magazines.

Toshiba has announced that it is adding new notebook models to its line of Dynabook machines. One of the more interesting of the two is the Qosmio V65 set to launch soon. The notebook has a 15.6-inch screen that is LED backlit.

Other features include a Core i5-450M CPU running at 2.4GHz and a 500GB HDD. The machine has a Blu-ray player and uses a SpursEngine digital TV turner with 32 or 64-bit Windows OS.

The Blu-ray player can record and play Blu-ray media. The notebook also features 4GB of RAM. Toshiba claims that the machine’s SpursEngine is the world’s fastest for dubbing material to the Blu-ray player. Pricing is unknown at this time.

There are many touch screen suppliers exhibiting at SID this year. The exciting news on the touch front includes resistive multi-touch. Fujitsu showcased its multi-touch resistive touch screen on a 6” mini-note that is selling in Japan. Fujitsu indicated that its multi-touch resistive is Windows 7 certified. The size ranges from 5.6” to 12” currently.

Stantum also demonstrated its multi-touch resistive touch screen. Its licensees ST Microelectronics and Sitronix are currently mass-producing the controller IC with several design wins. We’ll see a Chinese-brand slate PC with their multi-touch resistive in the market this June. The slate PC will be 10.1” and 11”. In Q3, we’ll also see a Chinese-brand mobile phone with multi-touch resistive in the market.

Wintek also demonstrated a 10.1” multi-touch resistive. Wintek indicated the technology is ready for commercial adoption. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronic demonstrated a 10.1” multi-touch resistive touch screen, and the unique thing is that it is also on-cell. However, the on-cell multi-touch resistive won’t be commercially available this year.

Multi-touch resistive touch screens have all the benefits of resistive touch screens, which is the most common touch technology. Resistive touch screens are inexpensive, they accept both finger and stylus input, and they can recognize handwriting. With the multi-touch feature added, it allows for a two-finger pinch, as well as spread, rotate, etc.

Compared to multi-touch projected capacitive, resistive is cheaper, but it is less durable. Resistive also needs a certain amount of force for the touch to be registered. Besides slates and mini-notes, resistive multi-touch will also be suitable for e-book devices. In our 2010 Touch Panel Market Analysis, we reported that a small amount of resistive multi-touch screens had shipped in 2009; 2010 will be the year for it to have high volume production.

In the semi-finals of Women's Soccer at the 2008 Summer Olympics, U.S.A. defeated Japan by a score of 4-2. The win propels the U.S. Women into a Gold Medal match against Brazil. This will be the 4th straight Olympics where the United States Women have played in the Gold Medal game, and their chance to bring home a 3rd Gold Medal for the U.S. It will be a tough match-up against the high scoring offense of the Brazilian team, but it looks to be quite a good game if both teams are playing as well as they look on paper.

The game began on a rough note for the U.S., who went down very early by a score of 1-0 to Japan, when Shinoby Ohno knocked one in during the 16th minute of play. The defensive front of Japan made it very difficult for the United States, and it seemed like an upset could possibly be brewing in the semi-final match-up. Heading into the 41st minute, the United States finally made it on to the scoreboard with a shot just beyond 6 yards from Angela Hucles. It broke the ice, and less than three minutes later, Lori Chalupny put in another goal after beating two defenders off the ball. Heading into the half, the U.S. had a 2-1 lead, and a lot of momentum swinging to their side of things.

The second half started off much as the first half had ended, with the U.S. putting a lot of pressure on goal, and getting many chances off of corner kicks as well as hustling plays down the sidelines. In the 70th minute, Heather O'Reilly received the ball, and with a swift kick from long range, knocked one right over the goalie to give the U.S. a 3-1 lead. In the 80th minute of play, Angela Hucles knocked in another one that surprised the Japanese goalie, and gave the United States an almost insurmountable lead of 4-1. Japan caught a break in the 3rd minute of injury time by putting in a goal after the ball had been bounced around in front of the U.S. goalie for what seemed like many minutes. The game ended with the United States women coming away with a 4-2 win over Japan, and an automatic berth in the final match against Brazil, who had earlier defeated Germany in their semi-final match.

The final match of Women's Soccer at the Beijing Summer Olympics will take place on Thursday, August 21st to decide who will take home the Gold Medal. The scheduled start time for the game is at 9:00pm Beijing Time, which translates to a 9:00am Eastern Standard Start Time in the United States. In the 2004 Olympics that took place in Athens, the U.S. defeated Brazil in the finals to take home the Gold. Now Brazil gets a re-match of that event, and the United States Women look to duplicate those efforts.
