The 22-year-old had been out with friends and they were walking along Chesterfield Road, Dronfield, in the early hours of Thursday morning when he was assaulted.
A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: “They met another man and got into an argument. Then the victim was struck over the head with a glass. He had deep cuts above his right eye and was bleeding in the street.”
He was taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital where he received 20 stitches to the wounds.
Nobody else was injured during the incident.
A 22-year-old and a 20-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of wounding and later bailed pending further enquiries.
