Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

Hewlett-Packard yesterday issued the third expansion of  notebook battery recall plan, based on previously published models, an increase of potentially affected batteries and notebook product models.

May 2009, HP issued a recall of 200,000 notebook batteries in the global scheme  . The reason for the recall plan is, manufacturers who charge the battery ’s supply business said that some parts of the battery cells might has potential thread to customers, such as fire or explode.

Yesterday was added to the battery recall program is used a total of six to HP Compaq computer which, the model were: 6510b, 6515b, 6710b, 6710s, 6715b, 6715s. Therefore, HP purchased the product to remind the user login page dedicated to register for their free replacement notebook batteries.

We have noted various other computers while both shopping and helping solve our family’s various computer issues, so I knew about what I wanted when it came time to replace our 10 year old IBM T23 Think Pad. Price was also a factor in our selection and frankly I simply wanted a Lenovo having had a long and very good experience with my T23. Lenovo is continuing the tougness of the past generation of IBM laptops.

The Lenovo G530 is really a fantastic laptop. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that the $1200 laptops have, but it is extremely quick in doing everything I need when I go online. There is tons of storage space with a 165 gig Hard Drive, plus tons of memory– and I am even starting to like Windows 7. I may eventually go back to Linux Ubuntu distro which is my OS of choice.

The Lenovao G530 has a very bright wide screen moniter. All functions are responding well. Lenovo has continued the IBM PC and Laptop appearance, and I chuckle at the black matte finish and think: “something only a mother could love.” Don’t worry about appearances, they still have the toughness that I enjoyed for years with my T23. Imagine going from 30 gig hard drive up to 165 gigs, and the same relative improvements on the processor speeds and memory capacity. This unit literally flies from on web page to another. The visual properties of the 15.4 inch monitor as well as the more than adequate sound card give good performance for enjoying videos as well as extended listening to your favorite audios through Windows Media which is included in the Windows 7 Premium OS.

I plug in my Koss PortaPro Headphones and hear every detail of the music. The sound card gives crisp digital audio performance that you will really enjoy. I’m not an audiophile but enjoy listening to a lot of good music and I appreciate the sound that I get with the Lenovo G530

We are very satisfied with this purchase which arrived from Amazon in just two days. We used the $40 Amazon Vista rebate so the entire purchase was $400.00 which is a very good value for a laptop with the large screen and obvious quality and speed. A tip that works for me, instead of paying extra to buy Windows Office, we installed Open Office which works great for me both on Windows 7 and our Linux OS which I have on our Dell Desktop PC.

I recommend this computer and feel you’ll get many performance features that you get on computers that cost much more. I have owned Gateway, Dell, HP and IBM and much prefer the current Lenovo G530 to all of them. Our Dell Desktops are recent purchases. The G530 has quickly taken over as my favorite. Great Value, Very Fast, and Built Tough.

There are a few of factors you should consider when choosing a photographer. Experience, references, portfolio and equipment are four key notes I would base my decision on.

Looking for a wedding photographer who has the most experience is not always the best choice. Though you do not want to hire somebody who appears to have very little experience, you may want to meet with potential photographers, looking through their portfolio and even asking for references! This will give you an idea what he or she is capable of. When you see a photographer's portfolio, generally you will see the photographers best work. You need a photographer who is not ashamed to show you what their good and bad shots look like, keep in mind that no photographer is perfect and no photographer always gets the shot. Your wedding is only going to happen once, so you want to make sure that you will be get the absolute best when it comes to your pictures.

Though equipment does not equal a great photographer you may want to consider what kind of equipment they use. You would not want your photographer showing up Kodak disposable camera's and expect good quality?? Generally speaking a photographer is going use an SLR camera it could be 35mm or it could digital, they will have accessories like lenses and flashes, tripods and screens. These are tools to make your pictures look amazing and help the photographer achieve the best they can. Don't be afraid to ask questions, any good photographer would expect you too. Find out why your photographer uses certain equipment that he or she does and what it will do for your photographs.

The last thing that was mentioned before is portfolio and references that the photographer should provide. These are so important tools for you as a consumer to know exactly what you are buying. I provide a link to my blog, a link to my web page just for clients who inquire to hire me, if I meet with them I further let them look through my latest works on my lap top portfolio and give them email addresses of clients who are okay with speaking to other people about me and my work. Being a photographer for the last 6 years has been amazing and the trade is all about keeping up and learning more. You need to know that your photographer is going to do an amazing job, though years of experience are great don't mistake that for quality.

“Photography is an art for lazy people.” So said Robert Frank, the celebrated Swiss photographer, to Allen Ginsberg, the celebrated New Jersey poet, as they gathered in a Lower East Side flat to make a movie. Frank was at the height of his fame after publishing his monumental collection of photographs, “The Americans,” but had newly re-imagined himself as a beatnik and filmmaker. Also assembled in that apartment were Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, and an ensemble cast of hangers-on, lovers, admirers, and jazzmen, ready to conceive another erratic self-portrait.

The film that emerged from that afternoon in 1959 was called “Pull My Daisy,” and though it fell for ages into obscurity, it was reissued in 2008 as the first volume of “Robert Frank: The Complete Film Works,” a beautifully packaged DVD set from Steidl. (Volumes 4, 5 and 6 will go on sale in October.) Narrated by Kerouac in a bluesy ad-lib and built around the wistful tale of a bishop and a railway brakemen, “Pull My Daisy” skitters and crashes around the room like a bad ballerina. But at its end, it collapses at our feet as a beautifully drugged-up and dreamed-out elucidation of our almighty American bards.

After all, we could always bet on the Beats to be their own best biographers. Though they’ve certainly left us an intriguing catalog of written work to document their lives and times, Frank’s film adds an invigorating dimension. But Frank wasn’t the only one pointing a lens on the Beats. Even as Frank was turning away from still photography, Ginsberg was crossing from one end of his remarkable life to the other with a camera in hand, and the images he assembled have been superbly organized into an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington (through Sept. 6), accompanied by a glossy volume from Prestel.

The simultaneous resurfacing of Frank’s films and Ginsberg’s photographs gives us a chance to shine the curious light of our decade onto a bewildering moment in American art. Pulling their grimy slice of the old Atomic Age into our confused new millennium, these works stir up the smoky Bowery, hold a lantern to the San Francisco fogs, and re-enchant an exhausted Beat cosmos for a new moment.

We see William Burroughs and Paul Bowles frowning in sun-bleached Morocco; Bob Dylan draped in an overcoat in Tompkins Square Park; and Gary Snyder wearing a monk’s traveling garments in a Kyoto garden. We see Jack Kerouac, young and vital, howling in the Manhattan streets; he reappears later as a drunken and bloated shut-in, just short of death and a long way from the open road.

And since Ginsberg was a great voyager, so we become as well. We travel to Dakar and Leningrad, to sun-filled Parisian dormer windows, to the rooftops of Benares and Marrakech, and to James Joyce’s snowy Zurich grave. Ginsberg’s elaborate, handwritten captions, occasionally composed with Dylan’s help, narrate these scenes in the poet’s characteristically long, Whitmanesque lines, while a spontaneity of prose straight out of a Kerouac all-nighter yanks the images along like an eager pet.

The captions themselves, executed as later-life, retrospective afterthoughts, act as concentrated poem-documentaries and leave us with a welcome first-person perspective of Ginsberg’s peculiar element. When the project is taken as a whole, it seems to serve Ginsberg’s poetry almost as well as William Blake’s prints did for his own verse: as a necessary and lovely companion-opus that springs with new life from the spirit of the writings themselves.

Oddly, Ginsberg’s photographs sat for decades in closets and drawers, then in the tombs of a Columbia University archive. But when scholars finally descended on them with their lamps and spectacles, they found something magnificent. With his secondhand Kodak Retina, the poet had surreptitiously illustrated not only his energetic generation, but his own oeuvre, leaving behind a catalog of images to reawaken the euphoric thesis that he’d scribbled across the arch of his lifetime: namely, that sex and poetry and the “cosmic vibrations” of youth and life are way, way awesome.

I look at hundreds of images each week. Many of them are beautiful and noteworthy, but a few stick in my mind. Often, the ones I remember don’t have an obvious use in our publications or on our website, but they are visually dynamic nonetheless. This image by Miguel Samper is a good example. Miguel has traveled for us to Colombia, Sudan, Pakistan, and Haiti. His work's been a staple in our photo library since 2007.

This photograph is from Afghanistan in 2008. The woman’s hurried gait is exaggerated by the camera’s motion and I can’t help but wonder what’s on her mind and where she’s going with such purpose and concentration.

Not true. I played the Japanese version of this game. The combat is actually really complex. Not only is there that slots mini-game that helps u level up Zack and all his materia, you also get to use all the materia in real time. You don't see the player in the video doing it much but if you roll around the enemy and hit them in the back, you do critical damage for those attacks on the enemy's back.

So saying that the combat is button mashy may be true (just like in Devil May Cry 4: you can beat the game by button mashing but you don't end up getting the most out of the combat if you do) but if you want to get the most out of the game, you gotta use strategy.

The site MacLife.com has been thinking for a long time about the probable innovative gadgets could produce Apple. One option, according to the site, could become iEye concept device “for the creation, processing and storage of memories,” or just a digital camera.

Mobile Fair sells imitation phones? Apple’s iPhone 3Gs goes at RM1k only!? 70% discounts?

Well, what a surprise! I was there myself today at the Mobile Fair at The Sphere, Bangsar South just because a friend of mine have called me earlier whether to buy or not the 3Gs iPhone which only cost like RM1k! Luckily, he was smart enough to hold his purchase until I got there myself and check.

To my surprise, they have many version of iPhones like Mini iPhone(?), Red Color iPhone, cheap fake looking 3G iPhone and the 3Gs iPhone itself! And all these products were promoted like brand new Apple’s products! And it is so sad to witness many buyers bought these phones as they have no clue they just bought fake products!

The funny part is, the sales person tried to convince me that he is selling original iPhone 3Gs with good price (after 70% off ). So he showed me the differences between 3G iPhone model from China that he called ‘the fake one’  (selling at just RM299) and iPhone 3Gs ‘Original’ from S’pore (selling at RM1k). Please take note that, the 3Gs iPhone was priced at RM1.5k before discount!

At a glance, you can’t really tell the differences. But if you look at it carefully, you will find that there are many flaws to the product such as:

1. Screen resolutions is not as good and as sharp as the original iPhones even though not that noticeable as the cheaper one.
2. Touch screen is slow and not responsive and sensitive unlike original. But not too bad.
3. The behavior of short cut ‘silent button’ at side of iPhone is different from Original. To change to silent mode/normal mode : the button slides up/down vertically unlike the original is horizontally.
4. The packaging is good, almost like original, even comes with believable manual book!
5. User interface (U.I) – 80% almost like as the original iPhone. But, the font is thinner and the design is not as detailed and as nice as iPhone has.

And the list goes on and on. Off course, having an iPhone 3G myself, gives me advantages to know all these things. But let me tell you how to know whether it is fake or not in merely just in 10 seconds.

Just do this following as shown below before you decide to buy;

1. At home screen; Choose ‘Settings‘
2. Then choose ‘General‘
3. After that choose ‘About‘
4. Finally look for ‘Version‘ (The iPhone Operating System no.)
5. The OS version should reads; 3.xx (latest is 3.13) NOT like random alphabets and numbers such as XXYAZ-ZN1773-HYWGG!!! Lol…

I immediately walk out from the counter and gave this funny look at the sales person as he realized I got him cheating and trying to sell fake iPhone 3Gs to me!

The best part is, before I busted his ass, he even dare asking me to trade my 3G iPhone for his fake 3Gs iPhone! And yet, still need to top up few hundreds! WTF! My 3G iPhone obviously has 10 times more value than his stupid fake 3Gs iPhone!

So guys, be careful whenever you go to this kind of fair. Make sure you don’t end up buying fake product unless you want a cheap alternative to original iPhone.

Because of the recent popularity of Apple's mobile computer line I've been reviewing Apple's MacBooks. I'm continuing with the Apple MacBook Pro MA895LLA 15.4″ Laptop. This is one of their higher end products and I'm going to tell you what you can expect to get out of them. I'll discuss where they're impressive and where they fall a little short. I'll also mention who will get the most out of them.

Hardware:

Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

RAM: 2 GB (DDR2 SDRAM)

Storage Space: 120GB ATA Hard Drive

Optical Drive: Use Apple's Superdrive (CD R / RW integrated DVD +/- R and RW)

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (256MB dedicated)

Display: 15.4″ running at 16:9 wide screen aspect.

The screen on this MacBook Pro is excellent, it runs at a resolution of 1440 x 900 and looks very sharp. The screen is matte, meaning that it has no gloss and is very resistant to glare although I personally prefer a glossy screen it seems they handle direct sunlight better. So if you're going to be taking this on the road then I would opt for the glossy version. I like that it has a 16:9 ratio especially if you're planning on doing and intensive image or video editing. This is fully capable of multitasking Photoshop and other background programs. It is also capable of running fairly graphically intensive games.

I like the dedicated video card with it's own dedicated memory. Since it comes from the manufacturer with only 2 GB I would recommend upgrading through a 3rd party if you're going to do much in the way of multimedia work on this notebook.

The notebook itself is relatively light and only a bit over an inch thick. It is not as mobile as some of the 13″ models obviously but has much more to offer hardware wise. This notebook is made of metal and is heat resistant, it also gives it a nice sturdier feel when compared to the non-Pro models.

Connectivity:

2 FireWire (400 and 800, use these to transfer high large video files from your digital camcorder or to transfer data between computers)

2 2.0 USB (use these to connect your notebook with a printer, digital camera, or an MP3 player)

ExpressCard (use this to expand via the addition of PC cards)

DVI port (which supports VGA via included adapter, this is used for connecting to a standard monitor)

1 Ethernet port (use this to connect to a LAN)

Integrated Wireless (Connect to the WiFi)

Integrated Bluetooth

The connectivity is average, although I'd say it is missing a USB port. I like the two speeds of firewire included. There is no card reader which most laptops on the market today include, Apple doesn't seem to enjoy supporting them though, but you can buy a USB card reader (another reason there should be another USB port).

Ultimately this is a fairly powerful notebook and should be used by professionals or gamers. The MA895LL/A of course would serve the student well as well as the casual user, however for the money it would be more notebook than they would really use.

For those of you who don’t remember the original laptop computers, they were not very practical. As with desktop computers technology advances have made Laptop computer much more practical. Today, most notebooks preform just as well as a desktop computer if not better then. Some people still remain skeptical however.

Part of the advance in free laptop computers is due to being able to mass produce smaller components. Remember when a desktop computer would take up an entire room and would not even come close in memory to the computers we have today? Being able to produce smaller components of computers has made laptops much more comparable in speed and efficiency to desktops.

Eventually desktop computers will become obsolete. Some companies are reporting a serious loss in desktop sales while laptop sales have risen significantly. This is due to the new technology advances. It no longer makes sense to own a desktop computer when you can buy the same speed laptop computer and have the option of portability.

Laptop docking stations are also advancing. Being able to connect all of your other computer components at one spot is convenient and companies are now making printers and scanners or wireless. Docking stations can now facilitate almost all of your other electronics as well as providing a desktop feel with a monitor and keyboard.

Many business have stopped buying desktops for their employees they are now opting for a docking station and a laptop. This eliminates the need for business to buy more then one computer for their traveling employees. It is also much more convenient to have all of the employee’s files in one place rather then transferring files back and forth.

More and more companies are picking up on new laptop technology. We will soon start to see much more emphasis on owning a laptop rather then a desktop. We can already start to see a shift in market for laptops. Take the medical field for example. Most hospitals are now utilizing notebook and touch screen tablet computers. It is much more convenient for doctors to be able to update medical records while in a patients room then having to write the information down, then taking it to a computer, and finally hoping there was no errors in the process.

Owners of new laptops will tell you that their laptop has replaced their desktop. If you are thinking of buying a new computer you should consider a laptop. It will save you a lot of time and money in the future when your desktop becomes obsolete. Staying ahead of the game on technology is an extremely hard thing to do but if we move with the trends we will start to see improvements.
