Game Review: Foto Showdown

I was photographing in the last months – please tell me when you like them:

Snowboarding-Vogel by Ian Middleton: Photography

From here

In honor of National Photograph Month, which takes place during all of May, this list is designed to give photographers of various styles and levels some resources to go for inspiration, ideas and a little extra spending money. The selections I have chosen to refer here not only represent opportunities to win awards or money with your photographs but a vast majority of them also can be used to prompt your experimental and creative vision. If you don't feel ready to enter any contests, it may be fun to review some of the past themes and give yourself regular assignments as a way to add more challenge and structure to your artistic routine. There is some great stuff available at these sites in terms of motivational tools in the form of both contest topics and galleries of other photographers' winning work.

A Singular Creation Contest

http://www.asingularcreation.com/showdown-rules.htm

The contest is an open theme calling for all genres of photographs and mixed media pieces. It is free to enter and as of now, the prize is $50. A Singular Creation is a community where artists can network with one another to get feedback on their works in progress or display their finished photos to potential buyers. This is one of the more down to earth and realistic photography and art sites out there. The work featured is really great, but not in a way that is pretentious and intimidating. Instead, the gallery seems to encompass all types of creative technique and visions and is very inspiring to browse. Keep this link in your mind somewhere for future reference, as new contests are advertised frequently.

Quantum Leap Strategies Ongoing Photo Contest

http://www.quantum-leap-strategies.com/photo_contest/photo_contest.html

This contest is very particular about the subject of the work they choose to award. They seem to be more traditional and conservative as opposed to experimental and abstract. For instance, their ongoing monthly photography contest does not accept work that features people. If you feel you have really great images of nature and the inanimate world around us, portrayed in a quality true color photograph, though, this might be a wonderful place for you to not only make a few extra bucks but to also get exposure. On top of that, the organization donates some of the money associated with the contests toward a charity that focuses on helping the blind. The current prize is $250 for the winner but that is subject to change.

Kodak Film Color Photo Contest

http://www.kodak.com/US/en/professional/contests/colorsOfLife/colorsOfLifeIndex.jhtml

Kodak along with American Photo and Popular Photography Magazine host ongoing contests that reward professional and amateur photographers with exceptional representations of nature and people displayed in quality color prints. This one is quite challenging and I am inclined to believe that they too, probably recognize more classic photography than modern or experimental pieces. This is a great place to submit your nature photos though, or crystal clear portrait photos, and the award money is very liberally distributed.

Apogee

http://www.apogeephoto.com/contest.shtml

Apogee Photo Magazine refers to itself as “A free online magazine designed to inform and entertain photographers of all ages and levels”. Along with a variety of great resources for blossoming photographers, they host free contests on a bimonthly basis to fulfill a changing theme. The themes are really interesting and require creativity and some real intuition and thought to try and tackle. This is a great place to get inspiring ideas for your photographic subject matter even if you don't ever even officially enter the contests.

College Students Only

http://www.popphoto.com/article.asp?section_id=5&article_id=1563

This place seems pretty open to any type of photograph. There is no fee to enter and you must be a college student to submit work.

Foto Fanatic

http://www.fotofanatic.com/Photos/Contest/Browse/

Foto Fanatic hosts monthly contests with unique themes to jumpstart your creative artistic abilities. Similar to the contests listed above, the winners of this site's contests appear to feature more of a classic, traditional type of subject matter and the images are examples of exceptionally clear color prints. The contest offers a great challenge though, and again, a great place to look even if to simply use the theme categories as ideas to work from to inspire your next photo shoot adventure.

Parade Magazine Snapshot Photo Contest

http://snapshot.parade.com/

Parade Magazine is continually on the lookout for charming, goofy, beautiful or any type of snapshot photo that celebrates the joy of life and makes you want to smile upon looking at it. Visit the website and view the past winners and you will get more of an idea what they are looking for. This seems like a fun contest to enter, as most people have a snapshot or two laying around that they always thought they could do more with. Here's a chance to show up your creative zest for life and display your photographic talent. You also may win $100.

Better Photo Ongoing Theme Contests

http://www.betterphoto.com/contest.asp

This is a very active website and is a great place to test out the universal appeal of your work if you are a beginner or intermediate level photographer. Any level of artist can enter but this seems like a place that is exceptionally welcoming of new work and quite possibly focuses a major aspect of the judging process on potential. As with the other theme contests mentioned above, consider visiting this site to help get those creative juices flowing. Click on contests and look through examples of past themes.

EphotoZine Monthly Challenges

http://www.ephotozine.com/photocomp/

This online photography resource features some truly incredible examples of photography in a broad range of genres. They seem very open to the more obscure and controversial type of photograph and one might possibly make a guess that they encourage it. A great place to enter your work no matter what level of photography you practice. Each month there is a theme but as many sites have topics that force images in your head immediately about what you could potentially take pictures of, these subject categories require some dedicated thought. Some of the themes are rather obscure in nature and require some thinking out of the box in order to achieve. This is a great opportunity for people looking to expand their photographic style into the more experimental artistic realm.

Amateur Photographer is the world's oldest weekly magazine for photography enthusiasts. With its unique weekly format, it is the first for news and digital and film equipment tests. Regular features on reader portfolios, darkroom, digital, black & white and photographer profiles ensure all areas of photography are covered.

Acer Beamer Online Shop

from: Samis Weblog

Review:
The keyboard is great, and I don't have any problems with the touchpad. I have an Acer, and that touchpad is more sensitive, compared to this Toshiba. The fan is quiet when its running, but I will say that it does get a alot warmer then what I thought it would. I have a small spot inside the screen, and Toshiba said to watch it and if it gets larger, to call them back. I think that my Acer, {model 1410-8414} is just as good, and I would recommend that one, and its a little less pricey too. However, this Toshiba has a lot of good points too, if you don't mind that it runs a little warmer. I did add more memory, but the 2GB's is enough if you don't want to add more. All said, its a nice little laptop, and I do love the 11.6 size, its so easy to carry and not heavy on my lap. I would recommend this Toshiba, or the Acer.

One of the most fun gifts I have ever received or given is that of a digital photo keychain. A digital photo keychain is a great little gadget to have with you to always have a reminder of those great photo memories. You can keep it attached to your set of keys or even just carry it in your purse or pocket. Another great use for a digital photo keychain is for ID purposes. Maybe you have an elderly parent or grandparent you might want to give this to for safety reasons. You could upload their picture with their name and information, along with your picture and information so if they were ever in trouble or lost the police could easily know who they had found and who they belonged to. I think the number one reason people buy the digital key chain is for sentimental reasons. I bought my Dad one for Christmas last year and uploaded a bunch of pictures of my dog and I before I gave it to him. He absolutely loved it and he was so tickled pink. There are such a wide variety of digital photo key chains out these days ranging in prices that it's hard to know which one to choose. I've compiled a list of the 10 best ones one the market today so hopefully it will give you a good starting point before you make your purchase.

1). Sharper Image 2.0

This is the keychain that I bought my Dad and personally my favorite. It is in the higher price range, retailing for $49.99 but it is definitely worth it. The keychain comes with a CD to run on your computer that easily helps you upload pictures onto the digital photo keychain. It weighs 14.1 ounces and the screen size is about 2.0×2.0. Sounds small but the image quality is great and even with the small screen you can see the tiniest of details. The keychain holds 60 photos, displays date and time, and also has a slideshow feature. The keychain has a rechargeable battery that lasts up to about 3 hours.

2). TAO 1.4-inch

This photo keychain is 1.4 inches square and weighs 4 ounces. It comes with software that has photo editing and it allows direct upload to your keychain from your PC or Mac computer. It holds up to 56 photos and also has a rechargeable battery that can be charged while the keychain is plugged into your USB port. Retailing for $29.99 this is definitely a good deal!

3). Digital Photo Frame 1.5″ LCD

Coming in at only $15.49 this photo keychain is a great bargain, plus it comes in pink! Digital Photo Frame really got it right with this one as it holds up to 79 pictures in several different formats, including JPG and BMP. It also has a rechargeable battery with up to 10 hours of battery life. This keychain also comes with a one year warranty and includes software, manual, and a USB cable.

4). Coby 1.5″

This key chain is right in the middle of the price category, retailing at $29.99. What makes this one unique is that it is available in a variety of colors including white, black, blue, and red. It displays your pictures beautifully on its 1.5″ full color display and can hold over 60 of them. The software included with this keychain allows you to easily transfer pictures from your PC onto your keychain in a matter of minutes. It also has a built in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

5). Innovage

Like the Sharper Image keychain the Innovage also has a slideshow feature and can also display the date and time. It has a 1.4″ LCD screen that is extra bright and will display up to 60 of your favorite photos. It supports JPG and BMP format pictures and with the software included you can easily edit and upload the photos onto the keychain. It also has a rechargeable battery with a 3 hour viewing window. It retails at $59.99 that personally to me is a little pricey, but it has some good features.

6). Digital Foci Pocket Album

What I like about the Digital Foci Album is that you can adjust the contrast on its 1.5 inch LCD screen so your pictures can be viewed in the optimal colors. With its 8MB internal memory it can hold up to 74 photos. It has a lithium-ion battery that has up to 9 hours of battery life. It also has the slideshow option as some of the other key chains do and retailing at $29.95 it is a great deal. It also has a built in clock and automatic on/off timer which is excellent to preserve battery life.

7). Gear Head

Gear Head's 1.5 inch digital photo keychain comes in a very different shape then all of those mentioned before. It is more oval in shape and its color is that of brushed silver. Gear Head provides up to 2 hours of viewing time with a rechargeable battery that can charge directly through your PC with its USB cable. It can hold up to 54 photos and its TFT screen is LCD quality. This digital photo keychain costs $49.99 and based on its screen size, viewing time, and look I do not think it is one of the best key chains available but it definitely deserves a mention.

8). Heart Shaped 1.1 inch LCD

I think this keychain would make a great gift to any young girl or young tween. It is pink in color and shaped like a heart. Any young girl who receives this would definitely be the envy of all her friends. Even though the viewing screen is smaller than all the other digital photo key chains, the fact that it can store up to 196 photos definitely makes up for it. You can manually scroll through pictures or you can set it on slideshow mode. It comes with a USB cable and software that helps you in uploading your pictures onto the keychain. The best feature that makes it the perfect gift is that it's available for only $14.99!

9). SIIG

SIIG offers a really nice digital photo keychain that has the buttons on the front instead of the side. The screen is 1.5 inches, with good picture quality and offers the slideshow feature. The only downfall for this key chain is that even though it has a 8mb memory it only holds about 26 photos. It does however like all the rest, have the rechargeable battery via its own USB cable. At $30 it is not the best bargain, but definitely one of the better key chains out there.

10). ZINA Z13-1000

With it's tiny 1 inch screen you wouldn't think the ZINA would deserve a mention in this list but it does. It easily holds up to 56 photos and due to its small size it would be perfect for up close shots of family, friends, and even pets; plus it's only $9.99! It has a browse mode and slideshow mode and its included software makes it easy to upload your photos in a few minutes. It also includes the standard built-in rechargeable battery and automatic shut off, which will definitely help with battery life. The average battery life is about 5 hours but according to my friend who has one of these it has lasted a lot longer.

How to Find Your Perfect Wedding Photographer

June 17th, 2010

Sure I'm a little biased, but I feel that your wedding photographer is one of the most important investments you can make for your wedding.

You've heard the age-old adage of how your flowers will die, your food will get eaten, your dress will get hung up in the wardrobe for decades, but your wedding photographs will live forever.
I'm not suggesting that without wedding photographs you'll have nothing to remember your day by but there is a lot of truth in that old saying, I'm sure you'll agree.

If your wedding photographs will live forever, how do you go about finding the perfect person to record your wedding day?

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER?

As a couple you need to work together to decide what you both want from a photographer.

*              Come to an agreement on whether you want a lot of formal pictures of your family and friends, or if you would prefer a more candid approach.

*              Would you like lots of pictures of all the details that you lovingly arranged, or are pictures of Grandad laughing at the best mans speech more important to you?

All of those things are important, but you need to work out what is more important to you both.

As an engaged couple, the chances of you spending a large amount of money on glossy wedding magazines is pretty high. I just know!

*              Which wedding pictures caught your eye?

*              Natural or posed?

*              Did the posed ones look almost natural?

*              Have you been to a recent wedding where the photographer impressed you before you even saw the pictures?

Find out who these photographers are! The ones in magazines are there because they want you to hire them, they're looking for more work because they love what they do!

Most photographers have a blog, they're designed especially for you. Look for photographers in your rough area who have blogs and find a few that you admire.

Google this: “[your nearest city] wedding photography blog”

You'll most likely be inundated with a large amount of blogs, some better than others.
If you are looking for someone to cover your day in a photojournalistic way, look on the WPJA for example.

WHAT IS IT YOU LIKE ABOUT THEIR STYLE?

Out of the few photographers that really stand out to you, is there one that you can't keep away from?

*          Try to pinpoint the reasons why you keep on going back to see their pictures.

*          Look for originality and humour in their pictures as well use of initiative.

You don't need an understanding of cameras and lenses for these things!

Can you imagine yourself in their pictures?

If they have a blog, look through all their recent weddings and learn to understand their style.

What is their style of writing like?

You should be able to tell if they have a real passion for weddings!

BE SURE BEFORE YOU BOOK

Try to get to know them through their pictures and style before you even meet them.

*          Before you meet up, ask your photographer to bring a sample wedding album or two.

*          Do you like the album and the layout of the images?

*          Are there other options if it isn't to your taste?

When you meet up, you must both like your photographer as a person. Could you be friends with them? You don't have to become friends with them of course but you do need to be that comfortable with them.
They will be with you on the happiest and most important day of your lives sharing those special moments.
You wouldn't invite someone that you don't like to be a guest at your own wedding would you?

Your prospective photographer needs to be someone who is very interested in you. You'll know if they're being genuine.

Notice that none of the advice I've given is about megapixels and special effects in Photoshop.
If you like pictures with special effects applied, then there is nothing wrong with that. Photoshop doesn't make a bad picture good, in fact it often makes a good picture bad.
I would recommend though, looking for a photographer with images that look as though they will age well; Pictures that aren't faddy.

A few questions you should ask your photographer are:

1.       Will you be the only person shooting our wedding?

2.       Are your packages flexible?

3.       What type of insurance do you have?

4.       Do you have back-up equipment?

5.       What will you do if you are sick and cannot cover our wedding?

6.       How long will it take for us to see the pictures?

Choosing a photographer doesn't have to be hard.
You must simply love your photographers work and have total confidence in them.
If you follow this advice, I'm sure you'll find your perfect photographer that can record your day just as you remember it!

Hiring a wedding photographer may seem like a simple task, but choosing someone to capture all the moments and details of that special day can be much more difficult than most couples realize. The professional you select will create a photographic record that will be treasured by your family for generations, and making this decision is a critical step in the wedding-planning process.  In some instances, hiring the wrong person might not only result in poor wedding photos, but could also have a negative effect on your entire wedding day (for example, imagine a sloppy-looking photographer running around, blocking the guests’ view and constantly distracting you from enjoying your day).

One of the most common and unfortunate mistakes couples make is hiring a family friend or an enthusiastic relative to photograph the day.  Some may even ask guests to take as many photos as possible with the hope of piecing together an album composed of candid shots, most of which are unusable.  Keep in mind that even with the proper equipment, photographing a wedding properly is a daunting task requiring significant experience, the finesse’ to be virtually invisible, and most importantly the talent and artistic vision to capture the memorable details and emotions of your wedding day. It is certainly not a job for the faint of heart.

How, then, does one choose an accomplished, professional wedding photographer? The key items to consider are your personal preferences in photography, your budget for the event, and the professional relationship and chemistry you have (or don’t have) with the photographer.

Wedding photography is usually classified as traditional, photojournalistic (candid), and artistic.  There is a wealth of information online regarding these categories, if you would like more explanation of each.  Although some photographers may declare that they are “hardcore photojournalists” (the current buzz-word in the wedding photo industry), I believe that a good wedding photographer must be able to do all the styles equally well. It is important to review a good selection of the photographer’s work, and you should love most (if not everything) you see.  You should insist on viewing complete wedding albums to see how your final album could look.  If you don’t feel an emotional connection with the photos, you need to iHiring a wedding photographer may seem like a simple task, but choosing someone to capture all the moments and details of that special day can be much more difficult than most couples realize. It is important to review a good selection of the photographer’s work, and you should love most (if not everything) you see.  You should insist on viewing complete wedding albums to see how your final album could look.  If you don’t feel an emotional connection with the photos, you need to interview another photographer.

Couples also either under-budget for their wedding photography, or they try to shop around for the cheapest package, forsaking quality. As with any creative service, with most photographers you normally “get what you pay for.” If you see an all-inclusive package with albums under $2000.00, the quality of all the products and services is usually poor. If the package is above $5000.00, you should expect 2 photographers present, at least 8 hours of coverage, and high-end wedding albums (along with some extra items, such as proofs or parent copies).  Make sure you compare apples to apples when reviewing various wedding packages, since they can be confusing.  In most cases a typical wedding photography budget would be in the $3000.00 – $6000.00 range. Don’t treat your wedding photography as an afterthought – photographs are the most enduring and viewed remembrance of your wedding day (more so, even, than a video recording).

Make sure you feel a personal connection with your photographer.  Some of the best photos of the day are usually taken “behind the scenes” as the wedding party prepares for the day, when you will be interacting with your family and friends. You should feel comfortable inviting the photographer “backstage.” As a wedding photographer, I regularly get invited to see the most intimate parts of the wedding day that are normally not visible to most guests or even family. Your photographer should be calm and assertive and have a positive energy about them.  Make sure he or she shows a genuine interest in you and your family. Do not hire a photographer that makes you feel that your wedding day is just another job for them.  Your photos would certainly reflect that.

BenQ Joybook A53 Features and Specifications

Sponsored Ads

Drawing inspiration from the stark lines and sleek facades that mark the contemporary cityscape, the Joybook A53 imbues advanced technology with the buzz and bustle of the urban milieu. At the same time, the A53 maintains a sense of continuity with other Joybooks through a shared design motif—the distinctive ornamental band near the hinge. Even before you open up this surpassingly elegant laptop, you’ll be struck by its stylish brushed-metal finish and tasteful etching. Inside, the chic brushed-metal effect is applied to the aluminum palm rest, while the graceful arcs imprinted on the touchpad echo the visual patterns on the lid. The display bezel uses the sophisticated RHCM (Rapid Heat Cycle Molding) process to achieve a lustrous finish that blends perfectly with the high-gloss LCD screen. The orange glow of the power button adds a warm touch to a beautifully holistic design.

The Joybook A53’s keyboard evinces the same emphasis on innovation and enhanced user experience as the overall design. A single quick glance is enough to reveal one remarkable advantage of the Joybook A53 over other laptops—an integrated numerical keypad to the right of a full-size alphanumeric keyboard.

Business users and other who frequently need to enter numerical data will appreciate this convenient layout, which eliminates the need to press the tiny Num Lock key on regular laptops—as well as the bother of having to seek out and hit keys doing awkward double duty for entering both letters and numbers.

The alphanumeric keyboard boasts some impressive refinements, too. There’s key spacing that’s actually greater than on a standard desktop keyboards and extra-large keys that provide a 20% larger area for your fingertips—helping to reduce typing errors, speed up typing, and increase comfort.

A Comprehensive Review of the Popular Acer Aspire 5720-4649 15.4″ Laptop

11 Jun

NEC Bike Show 2009 002 by CIA Insurance

The name Acer may not be familiar with many people but to me it usually means high quality at a great price. The Acer Aspire 5720-4649 is no exception. Because they don't spend the money on advertising the consumer reaps the benefit. I'm going to discuss what you can find on the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook, how it performs, and what type of notebook user this device caters to.

The Hardware:

Screen Size: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 processor;

RAM: 1 GB (expandible to 2)

Storage: 160 GB

Optical drive: CD-R/RW combined dual layer DVD R/RW burner

Weight: 6 lbs

Graphics Card: Integrated Intel Graphics Accelerator X3100

Platform: Windows Vista Home Premium

Acer doesn't have a big time name like Sony, Apple, or HP but they have been around a while and if you know much about the technology industry they're not a new name to you. They've been around as long as I have been computing; in fact I remember when they were the first manufacturer to produce a black colored PC. Before Acer came along all PC's were that ugly gray color for the most part. So if you're concerned about the brand name, don't any more concerned than you would be with an HP, Sony or whatever Acer is established and make a quality product, this laptop is no exception.

The first thing you notice about this little budget priced notebook is how well built it is. It is extremely robust and the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 feels like a brick. Unfortunately it's about as heavy as a brick. But if you're not going to be treating your notebook with much respect then this is a good option for you, its robust. It also runs quite cool, meaning that you can leave it on and in sleep mode in its bag without concerning yourself with it burning up.

This Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook's display cranks away at a resolution of 1280 x 800. The CrystalBright display offers fairly good clarity with limited glaring. It is a little difficult to see in the direct sunlight. It gets a little washed out if you're using the laptop outside. Other than that it looks performs pretty standard.

The notebook is a little underpowered but if you limit your multitasking you won't be bothered too much by it. The integrated graphics card means you want be playing to many graphic intensive games however it performs fine for everyday tasks. You'll be able to watch plenty of movies, and play around with home videos to an extent. The hard drive at 160 GB is adequate for this notebook's price range. I did find however that 1 GB of ram is not enough. You'll need to expect to perform an upgrade if you want to do much at all. Windows Vista is a fairly intensive platform to be running and 1 GB of ram just isn't cutting it. Especially considering the integrated graphics card shares the on board ram as its Video ram. Alright enough about the hardware lets talk about the connectivity.

Connectivity:

4 2.0 USB inputs (you can use these for things like your iPod, printers, your digital camera as well as other things)

1 FireWire (This is for high speed downloading of digital video files from your digital camcorder)

Express Card

5 in 1 Media reader (This is for the little solid state memory cards that your Digital camera uses)

1 VGA out (this is for your standard monitor)

1 audio out / 1 mic

1 Ethernet jack

1 Modem jack

For the price range im surprised at the connectivity options. It has 4 USB ports which is 1 more than what I would consider standard. They're also well placed, sides and back. The firewire port is nice but I don't know if its really needed. With the integrated graphics card and single GB of ram I wouldn't expect to do much intensive video editing but it might be fun to play around with, just don't expect to do too much without some considerable lag. It is missing Bluetooth which I would like to see in any notebook but you can easily add this with a USB adaptor.

All together the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 available at under $600 is perfect for the all business notebook user or the notebook user on a budget. It would also be great for students that aren't interested in gaming, but mostly school work as well as the occasional movie, DVD burning session or CD burning session.

Corning is probably better known for making glassware and ceramics than computer components. But apparently Corning is branching out. The LG X300 thin and light notebook is the first computer to feature Corning Gorilla glass in the display.

Gorilla Glass is described as “an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass” for portable displays. The glass is designed to be lightweight, and “damage resistant.”

Corning says Gorilla glass can be used in cellphones, laptops, and tablets.

The LG X300 is a thin and light laptop with an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and a 2GHz Intel Atom Menlow processor. It has a 128GB SSD and a fanless case design, which means it should be practically silent. It weighs just 2.1 pounds.

Unfortunately, while the LG X300 may have a low power processor and look rather netbook-like, word on the street is that it’s going to sell for north of $1000.

The 17.3-inch Acer Aspire 7740G is a fast, Intel Core i5 laptop with all the makings of a genuine desktop replacement.

Specs

The Acer Aspire 7740G packs a 2.26GHz Intel Core i5 430M processor, with 4GB of DDR-3 RAM. It has ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics running at 512mb pumping out pixels. It comes with a 640GB Western Digital hard drive humming along at 5400rpm. The 17.3-inch glossy display has a resolution of 1600×900.

Aesthetics and build

The Acer Aspire 7740G is no looker, and oddly enough, that’s what makes it so attractive. It doesn’t have the off putting multi-colour palm rest and keyboard combinations that have become so common place and its black finish, with dark blue on the outside of the laptop works very well. The build is very sturdy and robust, with very little bending when applying pressure to different  corners of the laptop, nor does it cave when applying force to the keyboard and trackpad.

It certainly isn’t for the fashion conscious, but, funnily enough, there are a lot of people who aren’t for that.

Photo: Acer

Input devices

The keys on the keyboard are spaced well enough that even for users with big fingers, accidently hitting the wrong key is reduced considerably. Unfortunately the byproduct of this intelligent spacing is dust can easily seep through the corners, but that can be dealt with a thorough wipe down. The feedback on the keys is also good, meaning there is very little to complain about with regards to the keys.

The gesture-based touchpad is a disappointment, though. Often times there are notable lags between your input and the feedback on screen and the design, with a dedicated scroll interface on the right-hand side of the trackpad. As for the thin, single button, it makes perfect sense and works very well, too.

The rest

Performance-wise, the Intel Core i5 clearly makes a major difference, with applications booting, switching and running very well. The turbo CPU coupled with the decent graphics card means it can play most contemporary games, but at reduced resolutions. The display is mid-park, with a decent viewing angle, though the gloss may put users off.

Outside of the trackpad let down, there’s very little reason not to recommend the Acer Aspire 7740G

I have to agree you you, it’a not such a big deal and certainly it would boost the prodution cost so much. However the lptops you referred overall use the cheapest components around.

And it doesn’t have to be Altec Lansing or JBL to provide a very good sound. I recently built a Compal barebone based laptop. Compal is also a provider for all those brand you referred but astonishingly my unbranded (or COMPAL-branded) speakers performs as good as or even better than the AL or JBL ones I’ve checked in many high-end laptops.

I made new Photos in the last months – please tell me your thoughts:

Blumen mit Wassertropfen by aristides2

Former LIFE photographer Myron Davis, whose iconic images included
the “From Here to Eternity” photo of actors Burt Lancaster and
Deborah Kerr kissing on a beach, died on April 17 from injuries
suffered in a fire that broke out in his apartment in Hyde Park,
Chicago. Davis was 90 years old.

According to the obituary that ran in the Chicago Sun-Times on
April 21, thousands of Davis's career-making images were found in
files at his home and miraculously went undamaged by the fire,
which authorities determined was accidental in nature.

Davis grew up on the South side of Chicago and later attended the
University of Chicago. He joined LIFE in 1941 and had also worked
for Advertising Age, the Chicago Sun-Times, Collier's Weekly,
Ladies' Home Journal and the Saturday Evening Post.

He was also a famed war photographer and, as Chicago-based
photographer Art Shay told the Sun-Times, was known for “living off
the land and living under combat conditions. He really had to get
close and that's what combat photography is all about.”

Davis's archive contains thousands of subjects, including a photo
essay on an Iowa farm boy and his dog, the last photos of film
comedienne Carole Lombard at an Indiana war bond rally (her plane
crashed on the way back to California), as well as portraits of
General Dwight Eisenhower, President Franklin Roosevelt, and famed
photojournalist Robert Capa reading in a bathtub, among many, many
others.

The photographer is survived by a daughter, two sons, six
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The final hammer has just fallen at the 17th WestLicht Photographica Auction in Vienna, Austria, and there's a new "World's Most Expensive Camera"—an 1839 Daguerreotype Giroux (above) was sold for €732,000, premiums included (approximately $899,000 and £622,000 at today's exchange rates). It is the most ever paid for a camera. (Alphonse Giroux was the brother-in-law of Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, inventor of the Daguerreotype—and generally credited as the primary inventor of photography, although the full story is more interesting. Note Daguerre's signature on the camera's label—click on the image to see it larger.) WestLicht expert Michel Auer stated that all other Giroux cameras are in public museums.

Several rare Leicas also achieved good prices at the sale, including #15 of the "0 Series" M3 prototypes—a rare perfect survivor from among 65 M3 prototypes produced, many of which no longer exist—which sold for €130,000 ($160,000, £110,000) exclusive of premiums. (With the lens I just wrote about the other day.)

The Nec Versa Pro J UltraLite Type VS Netbook will provide users with a system that weighs in at just 724g and is 15.8 mm thick. This makes the latest Nec netbook the MacBook Air of netbooks, featuring a slim and lightweight design. Unfortunately, this design feature comes at a price, which you’ll be able to notice once you’re done reading the netbook’s specifications.

The Business-Grade 10.6-inch Ultraportable Netbook has been featured with the Intel GMA500 chipset, coupled with the Atom Z540 low-power processor, running at a cool 1.86GHz. There’s also a 64GB SSD, ready to provide the end-user with just enough storage to run Windows Vista operating system and store some of his/her most important digital files.

Although it doesn’t feature the same exterior design as most of its competitors, the Versa Pro J UltraLite netbook still has enough room to pack the usual array of three USB 2.0 ports. Capable of withstanding a pressure of 150kg, the netbook will be available with a Windows Vista operating system. It begins hitting Japanese store shelves late in June, the Versa Pro J UltraLite Type VS will be priced at the equivalent of $1,052.

NEC has introduced yet another netbook, the LaVie Light Lui. Based on the fact that I have yet to see a single NEC netbook hit US shores to date, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that this one might hit Asia and/or Europe, but probably not US shores.

But it’s too bad. Because this looks like the best NEC netbok to date. It sports a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 160GB hard drive, as you’d expect from a netbook running Windows XP Home. It also has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 1.3MP webcam. But it also has a battery which NEC claims is good for 8.5 hours. If the battery lives up to the hype, that would certainly make it one of the longest lasting NEC netbooks, and it would rank up there with the Toshiba Mini NB205 and Asus Eee PC 1000HE or 1005HA for having on of the best batteries around.

NEC designed the netbook to work with its Lui remote desktop system, which means you can login to a Lui home server with the LaVie Light Lui.
