I made some Images in the last days – please tell me what they tell you:

There are a few of factors you should consider when choosing a photographer. Experience, references, portfolio and equipment are four key notes I would base my decision on.

Looking for a wedding photographer who has the most experience is not always the best choice. Though you do not want to hire somebody who appears to have very little experience, you may want to meet with potential photographers, looking through their portfolio and even asking for references! This will give you an idea what he or she is capable of. When you see a photographer's portfolio, generally you will see the photographers best work. You need a photographer who is not ashamed to show you what their good and bad shots look like, keep in mind that no photographer is perfect and no photographer always gets the shot. Your wedding is only going to happen once, so you want to make sure that you will be get the absolute best when it comes to your pictures.

Though equipment does not equal a great photographer you may want to consider what kind of equipment they use. You would not want your photographer showing up Kodak disposable camera's and expect good quality?? Generally speaking a photographer is going use an SLR camera it could be 35mm or it could digital, they will have accessories like lenses and flashes, tripods and screens. These are tools to make your pictures look amazing and help the photographer achieve the best they can. Don't be afraid to ask questions, any good photographer would expect you too. Find out why your photographer uses certain equipment that he or she does and what it will do for your photographs.

The last thing that was mentioned before is portfolio and references that the photographer should provide. These are so important tools for you as a consumer to know exactly what you are buying. I provide a link to my blog, a link to my web page just for clients who inquire to hire me, if I meet with them I further let them look through my latest works on my lap top portfolio and give them email addresses of clients who are okay with speaking to other people about me and my work. Being a photographer for the last 6 years has been amazing and the trade is all about keeping up and learning more. You need to know that your photographer is going to do an amazing job, though years of experience are great don't mistake that for quality.

After a wedding at Architectural Artifacts last fall, I could not wait to shoot there again. Eric and Kellie fortunately contacted me about shooting their wedding at the space. I was also so pleasantly surprised to find out that there were being married on the outdoor patio; I have never seen any photos of a ceremony outdoor there and didn’t even know it was a possibility. Venues with an outdoor ceremony option in Chicago-proper are almost non-existent, so needless to say it was a rare treat to photograph in the daylight. Eric and Kellie also had a relaxed Jewish ceremony, with four of their friends holding up the chuppah; it was such a nice touch, and I really loved the idea of your friends surrounding and covering you as you take the vows. There were so many other things I loved about this wedding: Kellie’s beautiful gown that she accessorized herself with a little belt, a brooch in the back, and a beautiful feather and gold hairpin; Eric shoes and purple socks; our fabulous portrait locations (so happy with these); and their wonderful families (both so kind and so funny).

I like to imagine different scenarios of what might have caused this phrase to be painted on the trailer – perhaps the workers suffer from short-term memory loss and have to have a constant reminder not to start hacking apart the trailer?  Or they start toward the trees, think “Nah, the tree could fall and crush my leg” and en masse rush the trailer and start cutting it up since it’s much easier and the planks just drop a few inches to the ground.  I just know it’s because management’s avariciousness has forced the workers to remind them, “You got the trees – don’t get greedy and cut up the trailer too.”  I wish someone would go paint over “trailer” and replace it with “forest.”

This afternoon on the way home from work, we decided to detour through Shiloh.  An afternoon rain shower had just ceased, and these deer had come out into the field to eat the rain soaked grass.

Nothing like a detour on the way home – backroads with confusing forks, hidden potholes, and now the weekend – here’s to a good one!

I spent the week-end in Harrow. Unlike last year, I decided to take pictures of the farm especially when I found out that it was the farm house that Lynne’s grandparents and aunt worked at when they came over from Portugal two generations ago.

Lynne said that the farmer’s wife, a Mrs. Fox, would not let the three Portuguese workers in the house. Fast forward 80 years and the grand-daughter of the Portuguese immigrants now owns the farm house.

Rainer and Lynne bought the house some 4 years ago and are slowly renovating it. When Rainer first took us to see it, I assumed it was a generic Canadian farm-house. This trip I learned that it was conected to Lynne and her family.

I have a good internet connection because I am able to connect with a different laptop. Acer will not defrag. Doesn’t have a system restore point besides the day it stop working correctly so I can’t even do that. Don’t know what to try next. Any suggestions?

I made some shots in the last days – please tell me what they tell you:

Over the last twenty years I have had the privilege of staying in Antwerp Belgium for almost 30 weeks. This happened due to my good fortune of working in product development for the US subsidiary of a Belgian company. Recently, it occurred to me that outside of places I have lived, I know Antwerp better than any other city. I believe a lot of American travelers don't include Belgium in their travel plans and opt for visiting Paris, London, Rome and other European cities without ever considering Belgium. When Americans do travel to Belgium they seem to include Brussels but don't include cities like Antwerp and Brugges. Antwerp is a good starting point for those visiting Europe for the first time. It is distinctly European, old enough to have a fascinating history, small enough to be easily traversed and large enough to have a great tourist infrastructure. Most people speak enough English making it easy to not get lost or disoriented and yet most communication around you is in Flemish or French providing a great cosmopolitan flavor. The people in Antwerp seem to delight in helping tourists and their hospitality is second to none. Here then, is Antwerp in a nutshell hopefully providing you with enough information to help you travel in comfort. Getting There From the USA, you can find many direct flights to Brussels. You can also fly directly into Antwerp from other European cities like London, Amsterdam, and Paris. The Antwerp Airport is a short taxi ride from most hotels. If you are traveling by rail from other European Cities you can check timetables and fares here .

Some Background on the City
According to the Dutch legend, there was a Giant called Antigoon that lived near the river Scheldt and anyone that wanted to cross the river needed to pay a toll. If one were to refuse, Antigoon cut off one of their hands and threw them into the Scheldt. One day a young hero named Brabo cut off the giant's hand and threw it into the river. From this story came the name Antwerpen from Dutch which means throwing the hand. During the dark ages, Antwerp was a minor city. Brugges, to the east of Antwerp was the center of commerce in Belgium. Between 600 AD and 700 AD the Scheldt River changed its course. The harbor in Brugges silted over making it impossible for ships to dock. Over the years, the ships began to bypass the great medieval city and docked in Antwerp. Modern Belgium is divided into three distinct regions. Brussels is the largest city and capital of French speaking Belgium. Liege to the east is the capital of the German speaking region and Antwerp is capital of the largest region, which is the Flemish speaking region. Today Antwerp has a population of about 461,496 (as of January 2006) and its total area is about 102 square miles It is the second largest city in Belgium behind Brussels. Points of Interest
Central Antwerp is easily explored on foot. When you get tired, Antwerp has a great and inexpensive tram system which runs underground in some areas and above ground in other areas. If you are driving, a circular “ring” road or beltway goes around the entire city making car travel confusing but easy. As with any European city, half the fun is discovering your own places. However, one thing should not be missed. Near the old Cathedral in the center of Antwerp, people gather in streets every Monday night around 9 PM to sit outside at the Cafes and listen to classical musicians play the church carillon. The sound echoing through the old stones streets is truly uplifting. Get there early and stake your spot, around 10 AM there could be up to 50,000 people walking the streets. It is easy to find tourist information in Antwerp, but I have listed here a few of my favorite things to do.

Rubens House
Peter Paul Rubens lived and worked in Antwerp most of his life.His house is a must see while visiting Antwerp. Not only was he a great painter, but he was also the first commercial artist. You can see much of his work such as book covers for Bibles and other books that were printed in Antwerp during the renaissance.

Foto Museum
The Belgium photography museum is located in Antwerp and it is a great treat for anyone interested in photography. Photography was “invented” in Belgium around the same time it was in the United States. There are many galleries and permanent exhibits in the museum.

The Middelheim Museum
The Middelheim outdoor sculpture Museum is situated just outside the 'Ring' in a park that was purchased by the City in 1910 to prevent it being cut up into lots.
The museum has over 300 pieces including August Rodin and Henry Moore. Most pieces are in a beautiful park area and it is great to visit in the spring or summer.

The Plantin-Moretus Museum
A fascinating museum dedicated to the history of Printing. Antwerp has been a center for printing since the 15th century, in the museum you can see Rueben's famous bible illustrations.

The Diamond Museum
This museum is one of the largest in the world. Inside you can view the diamond market when it is in session although no visitors are allowed on the trading floor. Antwerp has long been a diamond trading center stemming from the early exploration and colonization of Africa.

Hotels
As with any city, there are a variety hotels and inns. I can only speak for the hotels that I have personally stayed at. There is a newer Hilton Hotel in the center of the city that I have not stayed at but I have been inside the hotel which seems to be luxurious and expensive and it is in a great location just around the corner from the Cathedral.

The Golden Tulip Carlton Hotel is a lovely modern hotel within three blocks of Central Station. Breakfast is included as with most European hotels and the breakfast buffet at the Carlton will keep you going all day. The rooms are modern and air conditioned and fairly large by European standards. There is a Godiva chocolate shop in the lobby and each night, you will find some Godiva on your pillow.

The Alfa Theater Hotel This is a small older hotel in the center of Antwerp across from Antwerp's theater and near the opera house. In the theater square every Saturday and Sunday is the Market where you can buy everything from produce to live parakeets. The hotel has the smallest elevators in the world, but the breakfast buffet is great, the bar lively and the rooms comfortable. The best part is that the price is reasonable.

Astrid Park Plaza is a modern and comfortable hotel located within one block of Central Station and adjacent to the Antwerp Zoo (you can hear the elephants in the morning). The rooms are comfortable the hotel provides great amenities and services.

Restaurants
The restaurants in Antwerp are about the best you can find anywhere, including France. From casual bistros to fine formal dining, you can find anything. Like everything in Europe, prices can be very expensive. You can keep costs down by eating mussels (a local favorite) in just about any café or bistro in the old city. Tony's near the Antwerp Town Hall has great pizza. There are also some very good Chinese restaurants and other ethnic choices. I never did find a good Sushi restaurant, but never tried that hard either. Since Antwerp is a seaport, the salmon and smoke salmon is among the best in the world. Here are a few choices for the “serious dinner” you may want to invest in. Have your hotel concierge make reservations for you. Tell them it is your anniversary.

Rooden Hoed is Antwerp's oldest restaurant; it's been around for about 250 years. It is a very European setting with large windows overlooking the Cathedral Square. .The menu features a large variety including mussels and other seafood as well as fresh game in season. Attire is European casual

Neuze Neuze is located in historic center of Antwerp and is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The menu is French/Belgian but the presentation and service are truly exquisite. It is a rustic building where you can chat with owner and enjoy the special house aperitif while your table is prepared. Not just dinner, a dining experience.

Docks Café is the most casual on the list, but the food and service are great. There are deep red velvet walls, copper-green columns and a winding staircase all done in a modern European style. The menu is French and Italian with excellent seafood choices.

Gorki is a classic Russian restaurant with fantastic chicken Kiev, beef stroganoff and other Russian and French dishes. You have to be very careful here, since you will be greeted with a glass of chilled vodka which will be continuously refilled during the evening. Sometimes the Chef will come out and play the piano and sing which may lead you to believe that he is sampling the vodka.

The Koperen Ketel (Copper Kettle) restaurant is situated near the largest commercial building in central Antwerp but when you step through the door you think you have gone backwards a couple hundred years. This is where I first ate pheasant and is the best for fresh game and also seafood. It is expensive, but the service is impeccable. I ordered a cigar after dinner and they presented it to me, then took it from me, clipped the tip of the cigar, took two pieces of wood and wrapped it around the cigar. The server then lit the cigar using the wooden frame, removed the wood, dipped the tip in brandy and presented the cigar to me already lit with a perfect circle of white ash around the lit tip. Talk about service!

With all Antwerp restaurants, plant to go out to dinner between seven and eight and spend at least two hours.

Beer
People from Belgium love beer. There are literally thousands of brands of Belgian beers. Beers come in three strengths. Pilsner beers have the same amount of alcohol as a good American beer. Doubles have twice as much and triples have three times as much alcohol so you have to take care when sampling the brews. One of my favorites is Corsendonk which originally was produced by monks in a town near Antwerp called Turnout. The Kulminator
For tasting a variety of beers, try the Kulminator. This little bar not only stocks 100's of current beers, you can actually buy vintage beers at a vintage price.

Te Pelgrem
Walk down Pelgrem Street, about half way down you will see a little museum called Te Pelgrem, take the stairs down and you will enter an underground series of stone wall caves filled with long wooden table and benches and lit totally by candle light. Here you can order a variety of beers and food as well. Not to be missed

Het Elfde Gebod
The name means the eleventh commandment. It is adjacent to the old Cathedral and a great place to camp out for the carillon concerts. What makes it unique is that the entire interior is decorated with religious icons from the real to the blasphemous. Even the men's room has religious drawings and statues. The environment is somewhat surreal, but the beer and clientele are interesting.

You can spend weeks discovering Antwerp, but one day trip that should not be missed is to Domein Bokrijk. This is a huge open air museum dedicated to Belgian culture. It takes a whole day to visit starting at an old Flemish village where the Flemish lifestyle of the middle ages is displayed. As you walk through the huge park each turn takes you a little further into the timeline of development. Artists and craftsmen show their crafts from basket makers to silver smiths. They have even created a whole city in the middle of the Forrest which was constructed from buildings that were torn down in Brussels and Antwerp. There are restaurants and of course pubs along the way. You can also see the magnificent arboretum and castle and a very strange collection of chickens.

Antwerp is truly a great city, worthy of a few days on your schedule. I have just touched the surface, but hopefully have made you want to stop there on your next European vacation. It is truly easy for the first time American visitor. When it's time to come home don't forget to buy some Belgian lace. While you are there try to sample all the different types of Belgian Chocolate, I still prefer Godiva but Leonidas is also worth the calories. Don't forget to take some on the plane!

Shooting Challenge: Candid Camera

Capturing a photo of your friends or family, squared to the camera a la red rover or prom shot, dominates most of our personal visual histories. But for this week's Shooting Challenge, let's do better.

The Challenge

Capture a candid photograph of anyone(s) you know—a moment, an earnest reaction, gesture or interaction, frozen in time.

The Method

A good candid can't be forced. And it inherently can't be posed. It's about blending into the background, observing and striking at just the right moment (or maybe, considering the microsecond delay of your camera, that's really the moment just before the right moment).

Beyond that, read this tutorial and this tutorial. The tips differ but the principles are the same: do what you need to in terms of opening the aperture and cranking ISOs, but be ready to capture nuanced movement in unideal lighting situations with sharpness (unless you want that American Apparel look, don't even think about a flash). Burst mode helps…so long as your machine gun photography doesn't alert your subject.

I got an iPad recently, it’s not a bad device although it would be good if it had certain features such as a camera for example. For what it is the price could also be a bit cheaper. I got mines free, don’t think I would spend all that money for one but that’s just my opinion.

It’s probably best to wait for the 2nd gen iPad, getting the 1st gen of anything is not always a good idea. The 2nd gen will most likely have all or most of the features that is missing at the moment like a camera.

The device is not bad and depending what you want it for it can be very useful/convenient. It’s great for browsing the internet, going on Twitter etc, but it’s not really a replacement for your laptop.

A lot of people only bought the iPad because it’s an Apple product. If it did’t have an Apple badge on it there would not be so much hype for this device. That’s just my opinion, I know a lot of you will probably disagree with me.

The new Apple iPhone 4G is said to have a very high resolution screen with reports indicating 960 x 640 pixels.

If those reports are true then the screen will use IPS technology that has been seen in the new Apple iPad along with FFS (fringe-field switching) to make even clearer images. With the 960 x 640 resolution and the 3.5 inch screen size, this indicates a 320ppi making it a lot finer than other screens on phones such as the Google Nexus One.

The screen somehow landed in the hands of a company in the Czech Republic although it seems like they just got a screen and not a phone. They were unable to power it on, so the images captured are not lit by the screen.

What's interesting to note here is that the new iPhone has a close resolution match to the iPad. If apps are designed to work on the iPhone 4G then they should almost run on the iPad with no pixel doubling and hence, look way better then apps do now doubled up.

A lot of information is still missing about the iPhone 4G such as the official name of it (iPhone HD maybe?) and if apps developed for it will also function on older iPhone's with lower resolutions.

Apple’s iPhone production is ramping up to levels that suggest it’s “increasingly becoming carrier-agnostic” and could mean we’ll see a Verizon iPhone sooner than previously expected, Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar alleges in a note to clients today. Up to 12 million iPhones are already in the supply chain for the September quarter — a huge amount considering Apple has sold some 50 million of the devices worldwide since June of 2007. Kumar believes that if such production trends continue, Apple will move 40 million iPhones this year. He further believes that if Apple inks a deal with Verizon Wireless by the end of 2010 — which may be the last year of iPhone exclusivity with AT&T in the U.S. — pent-up demand for a Verizon iPhone could drive quarterly sales to 17 million.

Although Kumar is throwing around what sound like large numbers and what-if scenarios, his numbers may actually be in line when you look at several other key bits of information:

• Apple sold 8.75 million iPhones in the first three months of 2010. That’s a yearly run-rate of 35 million handsets, not far below the 40 million Kumar expects.
• Love it or hate it, Apple sold more than a million iPads in the first 28 days after launch, there are reports that 200,000 are being sold each week and in many retail locations, there aren’t any currently left. The halo effect of a successful iPad could help iPhone sales.
• Recent documentation confirms AT&T’s exclusive relationship to carry the U.S. iPhone until 2012, but Kumar sniffed out other supply chain details earlier this year that signal a potential change to that deal. In January, Kumar reported that Qualcomm had been tapped by Apple to supply CDMA radio chips — there’s no iPad model with CDMA support, so the only other reasonable explanation is a CDMA iPhone.
• Apple surely knows that there’s pent-up demand for its phone the largest carrier network in the U.S. — in a recent survey, more than 50 percent of cellular customers said they’d be “somewhat likely” or “very likely” to purchase an iPhone on Verizon’s network.

Given that Google claims the activation of some 100,000 Android devices per day, the game is clearly on between it and Apple. In 18 short months, Android has proven itself to be a force against Apple’s mighty iPhone and is catching up in terms of market share. And according to a recent AdMob report, much of the Android army is based in North America, so Apple could use another iPhone brigade in the form of Verizon.

 

With the announcement of Google TV we are sure, now more than ever that the future of media lies in on demand IP TV. With just about every tech company lining up with boxes and software trying to pipe Internet content into the living room, the future promises some pretty fierce competition.

Regardless of what you think about Apple in general, they are currently in the unusual position of being the weakest player in this emerging new media category. The current $229 Apple TV with 160GB of storage is an abomination of overbearing DRM and extremely limited utility. If the rumors are correct however, an ARM based version for $99 running iPhone OS 4 might be just around the corner.

The story was first picked up by Engadget who claims that the source of the leak was "very close to Apple" and the box would even offer full 1080p streaming. It remains to be seen if consumers will ultimately warm up to the idea of an Internet appliance as a separate box, or if they will favor software solutions build into TV sets such as Google TV. If boxes are the future Apple still has its work cut out for it competing with the likes of Microsoft and Sony who sell millions of dual-purpose game consoles into households every year.

As the World Cup is getting close, I will be posting a preview of each of the 32 teams in the tournament. The first team will be the host nation, South Africa, who is looking to advance out of the group stage for the first time. For individual matches during the tournament, we will be posting previews so this is a more broad look at South Africa. Feel free to share your comments how you think they will do in the tournament.

2010 World Cup Group – A, with Mexico, Uruguay, and France

2010 World Cup Schedule – v Mexico (June 11, 16:00), v Uruguay (June 16, 20:30), v France (June 22, 16:00)

Outlook – South Africa does not come into the World Cup with much momentum or high expectations. They will hope for a home advantage which has led every host country to at least the second round in previous World Cups. With Perreira as manager, the South Africans should have just enough to get into the second round. Anything more than getting out of the group stage is unexpected.

The first match is crucial for South Africa and if they can get a win/draw then their chances to advance will be solid. A loss will make it difficult and likely require a win over Uruguay and/or France. Either way, they will have the home support which should be the equalizer against better teams.
