Dividend based portfolios offer a secure base for one's investment strategy. A secure dividend helps cushion stock prices during market downturns and companies that regularly raise dividends have a growth base for boosting stock price in better environments. Here are some stocks you might consider for using as a cornerstone of your investment strategy. They are in multiple sectors so an entire stock investment structure could be constructed using only these or similar companies.

Factual information is from CNBC.com and obtained during market hours on 01/07/2010.

Altria Symbol: MO Price: $20.04 Dividend Yield: $6.80
The original sin stock selling tobacco and tobacco products. A true cash cow the dividend yield has been well above the stock market average since the invention of dirt. If one has no moral objection to selling tobacco MO is a good core dividend holding

Automatic Data Processing Symbol: ADP Price: $43.21 Dividend Yield: $3.21
A nice dividend is one reward for holding this stock that provides payroll services to a variety of businesses. A good economy will also set things up for increasing the dividend. More jobs, more hirers, more money for ADP. Also an improving economy will mean higher interest rates. ADP makes money on the “float.” They collect money from business to meet payroll taxes, hold it until it's due, them pay the government. During the hold period they collect interest on other people's money. All kinds of ways to win with this nice yielding stock.

Coca Cola Symbol KO Price: $56.06 Dividend Yield: 2.93%
Coca Cola has been raising it's dividend annually for year. There's still growth opportunities ahead overseas. It's stodgy, but a secure payer likely to continue increasing it's payout in the years ahead.

AT&T Symbol: T Price: $27.37 Dividend Yield: 6.14%
Another cash cow. All the front line telecom stocks such as AT&T and Verizon should do well as the 4G phones come to market.

Waste Management: Symbol: WM Price: 33.97 Dividend Yield: $3.42
The largest waste removal operation in the country. The yield is healthy and an economy that's ramping up should have more need of their services. There'll always be trash making this look like a stock one can hold over a long period.

General Mills: Symbol: $71.23 Price: $71.23 Dividend Yield: 2.76%
The dividend yield is a bit lower than most, but like Coca Cola it has consistently raised it's dividend annually. A staple stock one can plan to hold for an extended period.

Pfizer Symbol: PFE Price: $18.64 Dividend Yield: 3.88%
With recent partnerships and acquisitions to keep it's drug pipeline healthy Pfizer's dividend should be secure for years to come. Drug companies have traditionally been used as safer income plays, especially in bad times, and Pfizer should be a decent holding for the foreseeable future.

British Petroleum Symbol: BP Price: $59.82 Dividend Yield: 5.62%
The nice yield here suggests the stock price may be a little low. Oil companies are known cash cows and. all green talk aside, they aren't going to disappear anytime soon. Consider BP if you want an energy based dividend play.

Emerson Electric: Symbol: EMR Dividend Yield: $43.78 Yield: 3.07%
A premier electrical parts supplier, a rising economy should keep earning rolling and the dividend secure.
Another of those companies to hold for an extended period.

Proctor & Gamble Symbol: P&G Price: $60.40 Dividend Yield: 2.92%
A leading maker of consumer goods, PG has been raising it's dividend annual for years. Increasing demand for American goods in foreign markets combined with a weak dollar suggest continued improvement and further dividend gains ahead.

The World Cup 2010 Draw is out along with the odds from the Las Vegas Hilton. There are some interesting groupings and some easy roads out of the first round for some of the elite teams. The 2010 World Cup begins in June of 2010 in South Africa. A tough draw for the USA as they are in Group C with England. Brazil and Spain should have no troubles in their respective groups.

This week after the 2010 World Cup draw, look for England, Spain and Brazil to get bet down. Also keep an eye on what is being referred to by OLBGsports.com as the two groups of death. Brazil in group G and Spain in Group H. Both look like they have an uneventful first round ahead of them. The draw also means Brazil and Spain will not meet in the finals.

The first round of qualifying is broken up into eight, four team groups. The World Cup 2010 will be held in South Africa. The following are the groups and teams including the odds of winning according to the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook. (odds are to win the World Cup not individual games)

Group A

South Africa 80-1
Mexico 60-1
Uruguay 60-1
France 15-1

Picks to make it out of group: France and Uruguay. Tough to bet against the host of the World Cup, South Africa but sentimental doesn't cash your ticket at the window.

Group B

Argentina 9-1
South Korea 200-1
Nigeria 80-1
Greece 80-1

Picks to make it out of group: Argentina and long shot South Korea. Argentina is everyones pick but look for long shot South Korea to come out and shock Greece and Nigeria.

Group C

England 6-1
USA 50-1
Algeria 150-1
Slovenia 150-1

Picks to make it out of group: England and USA. Pretty much a no brainer here. The USA soccer has been known to struggle but that was many World Cups ago. England's odds are already coming down as of this writing.

Group D

Germany 10-1
Australia 100-1
Ghana 60-1
Serbia 50-1

Picks to make it out of group: Germany and Ghana. Although I picked Against Australia here don't be surprised if they pull an upset.

Group E

Netherlands 10-1
Japan 125-1
Cameroon 80-1
Denmark 80-1

Picks to make it out of group: Netherlands and Cameroon. This is another instance where it is a coin toss between Cameroon and Denmark. Cameroon gets the edge.

Group F

Italy 10-1
New Zealand 1000-1
Paraguay 40-1
Slovakia 150-1

Picks to make it out of group: Italy and Paraguay. This group is Italy getting out easily but if they look past Paraguay they may lose one game. Italy is also my choice for the 2010 World Cup Champions.

Group G

Brazil 4-1
North Korea 750-1
Ivory Coast 60-1
Portugal 80-1

Picks to make it out of group: Brazil and Portugal. Labeled the group of death by many, Brazil should have little problem and Portugal will be second best.

Group H

Spain 4-1
Honduras 150-1
Chile 50-1
Switzerland 150-1

Picks to make it out of group: Spain and Switzerland. Also labeled the group of death I like another long shot in Switzerland. Spain will obviously advance easily.

If you like a team that has long odds try to get money on it early. Some workplaces will put pools together for the World Cup. If you have an opportunity to bet on the overall champion Italy the defending champion looks like a nice price at 10-1. Argentina also isn't a bad choice at 9-1.

As always shop your lines especially on World Cup 2010. The first games won't go off until June so you can look around for your best picks and find a good number. Also when World Cup 2010 gets close look for sports books to try to cash in on the public desire to bet on World Cup games. You can take advantage of this by following team websites closely for injuries and match up situations.

I am pleased to announce that I am partnering with the owner of an Indoor Sports Center in Antioch, CA to bring this year’s World Cup to San Francisco’s East Bay. The event is called World Cup East Bay 2010 (WCEB2010).

The theme of the event is, “Watch, Play, Experience, Enjoy!” Soccer fans of all ages will have the opportunity to:

  • Watch all 64 World Cup matches.
  • Play in youth and adult World Cup tournament games.
  • Experience the excitement, culture, and fervor of the World Cup.
  • Enjoy the World Cup with other soccer fans under one roof.

I am always looking for help. If you would like to or if you know of someone who would be interested in being a corporate sponsor, a team sponsor to help those families in need of financial aid, a product/service sponsor, or can donate items for daily raffles, I would certainly appreciate it.

If you live in the Bay Area, I hope to see you this summer. Any promotion of this event on your part would be fantastic. Enjoy the World Cup wherever you will be. Go U-S-A!
