I taken a lot of Images in the last couple of weeks – please tell me if you think they are good:

The United Nations Photo Library holds a collection of approximately 800,000 photographs dating back to the mid-1940s chronicling the history of the Organization and its work. The collection includes coverage of historic UN meetings and events, as well as a wide array of field coverage from its earliest days.

The Photo Library's mission is to make its collection available to media organizations, governments and non-governmental organizations, researchers and civil society at large, in order to foster public understanding of the work of the United Nations and its goals.

What seems to be a new ‘press photo’ of Panda Bear has emerged, prepping him for his new TOMBOY album cycle. While most press photos are underwhelming and forgettable, Panda Bear ‘went the extra mile’, making sure that his new press photo will be a meme that lives on forever. The Photo features Noah Lennox covered in a mysterious white material, which might be cum and/or semen.

Not sure if this is ‘official’ or just some sort of fan doodle which is reported by pitchfork to be a “Photoillustraion by Maureen Gubia.”

Conspiracy theorists claim that this mystery substance is adobe, and the photo was taken while he was constructing an Adobe slab for his girls, but Southwestern American Architecture experts say that Adobe is a redder, richer clay which wouldn’t leave white residue.

Do u think he is trying to copy Ke$ha’s ‘covered in cum’ meme?

Wonder if ‘cum covered pix’ are gonna be the future of music. Just sort of represents how we are all standing in the middle of a hype circle jerk. Maybe with females, it represents them being ‘huge whores’ who have to ‘get cummed on’ by fans + the record industry.

Do u think he looks happy with his bukake-wave press photo?
What do yall think the mystery residue on Panda Bear’s face is?

Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld Are Attacked by Fashion Editor of Black Lifestyle Magazine for Photo of Schiffer, Blacked-Up

June 18th, 2010

I made some shots in the last weeks – please tell me your thoughts:

Enigma & Katzen wallpaper 1 by grey summer

{Zähne selber bleachen – Tipps

Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

One of the most important choices a couple will make is a photographer for their wedding.

There are so many important choices to make like the dress, decor, food, location, music, etc. Many couples feel the choice of a photographer is one of the most important since your pictures will be one of the most lasting and cherished memories from one of life’s major milestones.

We’ve all heard dissapointing stories about studios delivering poor quality images, or not delivering anything at all. By taking the time to do some research you can be assured of choosing someone who will not only provide outstanding photographs, but who can make you feel great and remove at least one worry from a day filled with stresses.

If any of your friends have gotten married in recent years , so find out who shot their wedding and if they were happy with the results. You’ll probably get some good references this way, so contact the photographers who did a great job for your friends.

It also pays to check out several photographers. Search Google or another search engine for local wedding photographers – here in the capital city of Alberta Canada, you would search for Edmonton Wedding Photographers. You can also do a search for something like Edmonton photography. You’ll get hundreds of results, but concentrate on those shown on the first few pages. When you visit the different websites, you’ll get a feel for each photographer’s style. Contact as many as you like. How they answer is a good indication of how professional they are. Are the replies professional and clearly written? Have they provided any other examples or references?

Next, make appointments with the photographers who seem like they’ll shoot the kind of pictures you want and who are in your budget. When you meet with the photographer, they’ll show you sample pictures and albums. How they treat you at this stage is a good example of what you can expect at your wedding. Are they friendly, or are they condescending? Do they seem warm, or are you uncomfortable with how they treat you?

The photographer will have an agreement for you to review. Take your time to read it, as it outlines what is expected of both parties. The agreement is for your benefit, too. Even though your are committing to pay them, it also commits the photographer to provide the services you have discussed.

Here are a few additional ideas that should help your photographer get the best shots for you:

1. Create a list of the must-have shots you want and give it to the photographer before the wedding.

2. Make sure you know WHO is going to photograph your wedding. If the main photographer isn’t going to be the actual photographer at your wedding, find out who will – and be sure to see their personal portfolio before you commit to hiring them.

3. Assign a family member or close friend to be the photographer’s liason who can point out all the important family members who you want to be sure to get pictures of.

4. Ask the photographer to attend the rehearsal so they will know where they can get the best shots without getting in the way.

5. Pre-plan where the formal and informal photographs will be taken.

6. Find out if the photographer provides finished prints, albums, thank-you cards and similar services after the wedding. A professional photographer can provide these additional services that will enhance your wedding day memories and many photographers have excellent resources for these items that are of higher quality than the public can get.

By following these suggestions you won’t have to worry about your wedding photography. Just enjoy your wedding day knowing you’ll have many memorable images from your wedding day to enjoy for the rest of your life.

The design of the Vostro 3300 is practical but at the same time, sleek. The keyboard is small, but it is comfortable to use and the wide trackpad is very responsive. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, excellent two-megapixel Webcam, SD card slot, auto in/out jacks, and a DVD burner are the main included features. This laptop comes with only one speaker, but it is very clear and loud. However, those watching movies on the Vostro 3300 may wish to use headphones instead.

Standard specifications include 2 GB RAM, a 250 GB 7,200 rpm hard drive, Ethernet, modem, and mobile Internet features including 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Missing is an HDMI-out port which is becoming standard on most laptops, so perhaps a redesigned version will include this. The standard model Vostro 3300 does not contain graphics other than Intel’s integrated HD GPU, so it is not a good choice for gamers. Battery life of the four-cell battery averages a disappointing two hours and five minutes, making the purchase of the upgraded eight-cell extended life battery recommended.

Short battery life and lack of HDMI port aside, the Dell Vostro 3300 is a reasonably priced wireless Internet laptop well suited for both personal and business use. An Intel Core i3 processor, 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Webcam, DVD burner, and various slots and ports come standard. At a price of $599, this feature-packed, attractive laptop is a bargain for either the home or the office user.

This purchase taught me one thing and one thing only: An AC Adapter and a CHARGER are (apparently) two totally different things, even though they look EXACTLY the same and even have the same model numbers written all over them.

This does not charge my laptop. It apparently doesn’t charge ANYONE’s laptops. I have an Inspiron 1525. This adaptor does keep my laptop on, but it does not charge the battery. Well, what’s the point, then? Why would i want to leave my battery stuck at 35% all day? Waste of money, unless you hate your battery for some reason.

That said, the company who sold me this actually offered to refund my money, which was very nice of them. I declined, and i just keep the adapter around just in case i might need to keep my laptop on and i don’t feel like charging either of my batteries (which is, by the way, stupid).

UPDATE: Someone commented on my review that this product’s description never says that it’s a charger. Fair enough. It also doesn’t say that it’s NOT a charger, which is misleading. And if you’re like most people, when you need to replace your CHARGER, you will likely read the model number from your existing charger, and type it into the search bar. This “AC Adapter” will come up on the list because it has the same model number. Defend the company all you want…this is meant to mislead customers and increase sales.

By the way, the SAME commenter (in a moment of utter brilliance) also said that there must be something wrong with my battery, since this Adapter doesn’t charge it. Wait…i thought you said it wasn’t a charger. Make up your mind son!

Anyway, i replied in the comments if you really want to see my response.

We all know that Father's Day is a brilliant chance to show your dad how much you love and appreciate him, but it brings a major dilemma with it. Men, and especially fathers, are notoriously difficult to buy for. This especially applies if your father is a technophobe because the majority of Father's Day gift ideas are electronic goods.

Well, if your dad is a technophobe and you are struggling for Father's Day gift ideas, look no further than the top 7 technophobe gifts below!

  1. A Fussball Table – This is the perfect gift for a technophobe dad because there is absolutely no technology involved. The game is fun and can be enjoyed by the whole family, especially if you happen to be competitive. It will also no doubt take him back to his youth! The cheapest ones cost as little as $50 so it is an absolute bargain too!
  2. Tickets To A Soccer/Basketball/Baseball Match – For the sporty dad, tickets to a sports event can provide a memorable experience that he will not forget for years to come. This Father's Day gift idea is difficult to top in future years but need not be expensive. Some tickets are as little as $10 a piece, although you might want to throw in a hotdog as well for good measure!
  3. A Universal Remote – No technophobe dad wants to use one remote for the TV, another for the DVD player and a third for Tivo/Sky so get him a universal remote. At $20 to $25 for a really good one, he can enjoy all of his TV shows with no difficulty at all.
  4. A Sports Car For A Day – You can now rent sports car for a couple of hours or even a whole day for upwards of $200. This is a pricey but fabulous present that could help your technophobe dad to live all of his childhood dreams and pose for a while. It's the stuff dreams are made of!
  5. Prehistoric Man Gifts – You can actually buy these on the Internet at http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/p/pre-historic_man_gifts.asp. They are hilarious cartoons that feature cavemen making jokes about inventions like the wheel. If you want to have a bit of fun with your technophobe dad and make him laugh then this is a must!
  6. A Personalized Number Plate – These would vary in price but they are very safe as far as Father's Day gift ideas are concerned. What man would not want his very own number plate for his car to show off with?
  7. The Dummies Guide To The Internet – Obvious but necessary! Your father could have hours of fun on the Internet if he knew how to use it so invest $20 and get him the book that will teach him to do just that!

Even if you do not get your father any of the above, your Father's Day gift ideas should be original and relevant if you really want to show you care. One word of advice though – avoid socks at all costs!

Global Elimination is the equivalent of an offline multiplayer mode that lets four people play together on one system. each player picks a certain number of teams to play with and then challenges another player to a match. The halves of these games are shortened to two minutes, so the matches go by quickly and players aren't stuck waiting around for their turn to play. It's fun to an extent, but the short matches don't allow much time for interesting back-and-forth gameplay. Instead, it's more focused on who can kick a goal first and then try their hand at a succession of corner kicks for an easy goal.

World Tour mode lets you take on every single team in the game and keeps track of which teams you've defeated via an in-game map of the world. It's not much more than a beefed-up exhibition mode, but it's neat to see the different spots in the map get filled in as you advance past each team. If you were motivated to defeat each one, this mode would take you quite a bit of time to finish.

Last, but certainly not least, there's the actual World Cup mode, where you can pick a team from the 32 qualifying teams, or you can replace a qualifying team with a team of your choice. You have a number of options, including changing the roster, switching around the group to which your nation is assigned, and changing the initial teams you'll play against if you're in a particularly easy (or difficult) bracket. Once you get past the initial rounds in your selected bracket, you'll move on to the tournament proper. It doesn't take a great deal of time to get through this mode, but I was disappointed in the apparently lack of save options midway through the tournament, so I was forced to play through it all at once instead of playing a couple of games and coming back to it later.

The control setups are nice, and while I went with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for the game, you can opt to play with only the Wiimote, so that the running is handled automatically, or you can play with the Classic Controller if you prefer a more traditional controller setup. I think the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination feels pretty balanced; I was able to do everything I needed within the game without fighting the controls. when moving downfield, you'll control your selected player with the Nunchuk and control passing with the A button. You can shake the Wiimote to shoot and tackle and hit the Z button to get a burst of speed. when there's a corner kick situation, or a lob pass, the ball with light up momentarily, and during this point, you're supposed to shake the controller before your opponent reacts so that you'll get the advantage. It's very simple to wrap your mind around, and I think the game would be pretty accessible to just about anyone who wants to try it. If you have a younger sibling, child, or someone who's not familiar with traditional video games, going with the Wiimote-only option is pretty cool, too; the AI does a solid job of getting you where you need to be and lines up shots correctly.

The player AI is pretty good, and while I'm sure the hardcore FIFA fans will prefer more of a challenge, the medium difficult level was certainly good enough for me. It seems that higher-ranked teams are more likely to get the drop on you when it comes to reacting during corner kicks, and this sometimes feels unfair because I wasn't sure how I could have shaken the controller any faster. That's a pretty minor complaint, though.

If you enjoy FIFA titles, there's a lot to love in 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. If you're either new to soccer games or video games in general, the ease of gameplay in this particular game makes it an ideal sports title to try out. The Zakumi Dream Team mode is a neat addition to the series and certainly adds a lot of replay value, especially for the hardcore soccer fans. this is the most fun I've had with a soccer title in quite a while, so 2010 FIFA World Cup is definitely worth checking out.

    Score: 8.0/10

  • I know there are probably a thousand threads of this, but I wanted to add my own (sorry).

Here's some of the items I would really love to see in Fifa11, some of them may be just pipe dreams, whereas others I real possibilities.

11 Wishlist Items for Fifa 11

    • Iron out bugs in Manager Mode
Based on Fifa10 and Fifa 2010 World Cup, EA really need to improve their QA and testing of their products before they ship. Games freezing / $16billion debt when starting a new season / played added to shortlist impossible to buy / Managers being sacked if they drop out of cup early yet they are winning the league, etc etc. I would really like to see them improve the stability of Manager Mode.
      _
    • Ability to save replays to HD
I currently live in a country where the internet is rubbish. I'm lucky if I get 256k speeds on a good day! So saving replays to the EA Servers each time, takes a good 15/20 minutes sometimes, and as for online play – forget it.
It would be good then to at least save my replays to HD to view later and show off (outside of the game) to others.
      _
    • More Trophies / Achievements
I know a lot of people couldn't give a damn about about trophies, but I love hearing the ping of getting a certain trophy. I remember in Fifa09 there were a lot of trophies for stuff you'll do in game that they never had for Fifa10 (like score from 30yrds, corner, cross etc). More of these please, with some more thrown in for good measure – especially for my Virtual Pro.
      _
    • Improve Virtual Pro
Virtual Pro was an outstanding idea for Fifa10, I loved being able to 'level up' my VP over time. I would love to see this reintroduced in Fifa11 but with more depth. Perhaps more achievements but with lower values for some. My VP is almost maxed out (except online achievements), having played 350+ games. I would love to see this increased so that it would take you nearly 500+ games (or more) to really max you VP. But at the same time, ensuring you're still earning achievements every few games or so (at the later stages).
      _
    • More Stadiums
I would love to see all the stadiums for the Major leagues in Europe (or certainly the top 50% of the teams in those leagues). Example: 10+ Premiership Stadiums, 10+ for La Liga, etc.
      _
    • Better Soundtrack
This one all comes from personal preference. I loved the soundtrack on Fifa09, the soundtrack for Fifa 2010 World cup isn't bad. But Fifa10.. I can't stand most the songs on there. Sorry!
      _
    • Gameplay : Handballs
I got told yesterday, that in Fifa08 (for psp), it had handballs in there.. I don't know if that's true or not, but obviously they must have been toying with the idea from time to time. This I appreciate is probably extremely difficult to balance and QA properly. But I wonder who else has seen the ball fly up toward the arm/hand and it's altered it's path, then shouted "Handball" at the telly, but you know full well, that they don't exist in game. This would be ace if they could implement this feature. Maybe with an option to turn it off if they worry it wouldn't balance properly.
      _
    • Gameplay : Penalties
Same as Fifa2010 World Cup Please!
      _
    • Gameplay : Injuries
When injured, I believe only your stamina takes a hit (I may be wrong here?). It would be good if all your stats could reduce by a certain % depending on the injury (if just a bit of cramp which may go away in 10mins, it would reduce a lot, but recover quickly – maybe with a small indication what type of injury it may be). Then you can decide to take him off or leave him playing.
      _
    • More Fanfare in big games/cup finals
I noticed this in Fifa2010 World Cup, you can play qualifying games – like England at Wembley, fairly normal atmosphere, but as soon as you enter the first game at South Africa, OH WOW!.. Ramp that volume up, the crowd were deafening – you can barely hear the commentators at times.. Please PLEASE bring to Fifa11. It would make those Big Games / Cup Finals all the more satisfying to compete in.
      _
      and finally…
    • Ability to add name to voice database
This one's a tad tricky to explain – but I do believe it's possible. What happens when your name is missing from the commentary? You either leave it empty or you pick a name that may sound a little like it.. But it doesn't, not really does it? It would be nice to have a website (or in game) where you can type your names and it will try to pronounce it for you, and you may be able to change sliders or values to try to make it sound a bit like Martin Tyler (or whoever is doing the commentary this year). Kind of like a voice modulator thing. On the Mac and Windows you have a whole host of different voices that can read what you type.. Just maybe use something like that but make it sound a bit more like Martin Tyler or Andy Gray or whoever!
It'll never happen I know.. but wishful thinking!

You may have noticed I didn't list down any Online improvements – perhaps if I were back in the UK (or any country that had a reasonably decent internet service) then I may have. But right now, I don't play online as I would be lucky if it even connects, let alone complete a match!
To download any patches takes the best part of a day sometimes – so please EA, ship it with some stable code will ya!?

HP Pavilion 13.3-Inch Bronze Laptop Review Model: DV3-1075US

    May 29th, 2010

    Sony Vaio T by nDevilTV

    Epson Laser Drucker billig

In this review I have my hands on the HP Pavilion M8300F Desktop PC which is one of HP's top selling multimedia PC's. This desktop is designed to do it all, from playing games to movies, and everything “fun”. With the recent explosion of lower priced HD televisions and the influx of consumer dollars into the multimedia arena this style of desktops are currently among some of the most competitive. This is good news for the consumer as prices drop and the desktops get loaded with more and more features. In this review I'm going to let you know what kind of features you can expect from the HP M8300F and who would get the most out of owning one of these machines. First I'm going to start with a run down of some of the basics.

    Hardware:

    Processor: 3.0 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ dual-core processor

Storage Space: 2 320GB hard drives yielding 640GB

RAM: 3GB (expandable up to 8GB)

Optical drive: CD R RW with integrated DVD R +/- RW

    Tuner: NTSC / ATSC

Graphics Accelerator: Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE (uses both dedicated and shared system memory)

Includes: keyboard, mouse, and remote control

This thing comes pretty well stacked. I love that it has the integrated television tuner, it really unlocks a lot of Vista's multimedia potential. You could actually use this desktop as the backbone of your living room's entertainment center. This could serve as a digital video recorder, a gaming system, and even as a standard PC for web browsing, and god forbid… work. The graphics card is adequately strong to power some of the most graphically intensive titles and there is enough RAM to multi task in memory hog Vista.

The HP Pavilion M8300F does come with a lot of trial ware that can go. Many of it has little to no use when compared to many of the features already pre-included in Window's Vista. These add undue strain especially at start up and I would delete whatever you're not going to use immediately.

The only hardware upgrade I would consider would be to expand the RAM. It is capable of handling 8GB but 6 would probably be all that you would need. The move from 6 to 8 would probably not illicit noticeable gains unless you're using this desktop for some serious graphical editing or 3D rendering.

    Connectivity:

1 Ethernet port (to hard wire connect to your LAN)

6 2.0 USB (to connect with about any peripheral from mice and keyboards to printers and digital cameras)

2 FireWire (to connect and process high speed data transfers from other devices such as digital camcorders)

1 VGA (connects to a standard computer monitor)

1 S-Video (typically used to connect to a projector although may be compatible with some televisions)

    1 composite A/V (connect to a television)

1 audio out, digital audio out / 1 mic in

15 in 1 memory card reader (use this to insert your solid state memory from your digital camera)

I love the connectivity, I would like to see something in line with an HDMI port, however the composite output will do the trick. I just like the compactness and ease of the HDMI. The 15 in 1 card reader is a little over kill but you can be sure it will have no problem reading whatever memory you happen to use.

This desktop is currently on sale for about $750. This is a steal; I expect to see it bounce back up to around $1000. It is worth every penny at that price point. It would certainly make any gamer happy, or entertainment junkie. It will hold its own in the office as well running AutoCAD or just pumping out spread sheets. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a winner.

At the IMS Market Focus Conference at SID 2010, yesterday was devoted to all aspects of the 3DTV market. During the session on the 3DTV Market Outlook, one of the speakers was Jim Sanduski, Senior Vice President for Sales with Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. He made a number of interesting comments during his presentation, such as the fact that Panasonic does not feel that the current real-time 2D-to-3D conversion technology produces adequate quality, which is why the company does not include the feature in its models.

The fragmented world of professional soccer in the United States can be a little difficult to follow. Falling well after football, baseball, basketball, and hockey on the list of popular team sports, soccer takes its place as America’s fifth choice. Despite this low-status relegation, and perhaps because of it, following indoor soccer in Milwaukee can be an remarkably enjoyable local pasttime.

Milwaukee’s professional men’s soccer team, the Wave, are part of the Major Indoor Soccer League (www.misl.net), winning the league crown as recently as the 2004-2005 season. Professional soccer leagues with various names have come and gone over time, but the MISL traces its history back to 1984 with the formation of the American Indoor Soccer Association. The Wave was one of the original AISA teams and began playing at the Milwaukee Auditorium, also using the Bradley Center for a period of time.

Now hosting visiting teams at US Cellular Arena, popularly known the “the Cell,” the Milwaukee Wave are finally in a long-term location that is appropriate for their attendance figures. Indoor soccer at the Bradley Center felt sparsely attended due to the venue’s large size, and the Wave did not have scheduling priority when compared to the Bucks (NBA) or the Admirals (AHL). With a seating capacity of about 9500, US Cellular Arena is a cozier fit for the Wave.

The Milwaukee Wave is one of six active MISL teams.

    Baltimore Blast
    California Cougars
    Chicago Storm
    Milwaukee Wave
    Philadelphia Kixx
    Saint Louis Steamers

A seventh team, the Kansas City Comets, went inactive for the 2005-2006 season but may return in the future. Running from October until April, the Major Indoor Soccer League season consists of 30 games for each team.

Led by veteran coach Art Kramer, a veritable soccer scholar with nearly 25 years of professional playing and coaching experience, the Milwaukee Wave are comprised of both international players and hometown soccer stars. Though not as recognizable as players from the Green Bay Packers or Milwaukee Bucks, the men of the Milwaukee Wave are more accessible to their fans, regularly participating in community events around the metro area. For details on the team, including player statistics and the schedule, check out their website: www.milwaukeewave.com.

Tickets for Milwaukee Wave home games are inexpensive: just $12 can put you in the “cheap seats.” If you want to be closer to the action, the VIP seating is only $20. It would be impossible to attend a Green Bay Packers game for this price, so consider indoor soccer as a fun alternative to football during the snowy season. There’s something to be said for indoor sports during the tough Wisconsin winters.

Like other professional sports teams, the Milwaukee Wave offer various promotions and season packages, including an excellent “Kids Club” that will make any little kicker feel like a big star. All jokes about being a “soccer mom” aside, taking children to a Milwaukee Wave game is a great way to expose them to a sport that often gets overlooked on American television. The team even puts its name behind some reasonably affordable summer soccer clinics and camps (starting at $125).

In these days of almost obligatory corporate sponsorship, the Wave have been able to attract the support of some large Milwaukee-based corporations, as well as a number of smaller companies. Notably, Miller Lite and Midwest Airlines appear on the list of official sponsors (as of November 2005).

So what about the game itself? If you’re not familiar with indoor soccer in the United States, here are some of the specifics:

    · There are four 15-minute quarters.
    · A tie at the end of the fourth quarter is resolved by sudden death overtime.
    · Each team can have five players (two defenders, two forwards, and a midfielder) plus a goaltender on the field at a time.
    · Power plays occur on blue or red cards given for penalties and ejectionable offenses.
    · Balls may be bounced off the boards.
    · The goals are not conventional nets but rather boxes recessed from the edge of the field

The complete rules of the game available from the www.misl.net website.

With the relative instability of indoor soccer league teams, the Milwaukee Wave have been a success story in a town that is usually distracted by its beloved Packers and Bucks. The Wave are well worth a visit to the US Cellular Arena. After all, they are the most recent professional sports team in Milwaukee to garner a league championship!
