Nonetheless, in an obvious cost and weight saving move, Dell hasn’t extended the aluminium around to the palm rests. For such a portable laptop you do get a handful of ports – a USB, combo eSATA/USB, VGA and Ethernet. All these connections are found on the back edge.

You will find a SDHC and an Express card on the right side, along with headphone and microphone jacks on the front.

The thickness of this laptop still stuns me; coming at 0.65 inch it’s actually thinner than the Apple MacBook Air (on the thickest part).

Give it a twist and you will be surprised at how rigid this ultra portable is. This gives an incredibly solid and sturdy design. So combined with the 3.5lb chassis it is certainly going to be easy to lug around the office.

Usually when I come to use ultra portable laptops I tend to try and get out of using them. Small track pad’s and the general layout is poor. Not with the v13. The pad itself is extremely spacious, even for us with fat fingers. My one and only gripe though, is that your finger does seem to grip to the pad, which does become frustrating over time. Two finger scrolling though. All I can say is Yeah baby!

Being provided a full sized keyboard is a real treat on such small laptops, and like most of Dell's laptop range I found it very easy to type on. The one thing that it trumps over the others is the amount of keyboard flex. It’s practically non-existent. It just gives the right feedback when typing, plus it sounds nice too.

Battery life. Well, it’s not going to win any awards here what-so-ever. When streaming video with the brightness set to 100% the laptop only lasted 110 minutes.

Now considering that this has a built in battery, the probability of getting a lot of work done on a journey without a power point is looking slimmer by the second. Nevertheless carrying out basic tasks such as email and web browsing you can expect the battery to last just over 2.5 hours.

By no means is the V13 a powerhouse, but it sure as hell does keep things going when doing productivity work and browsing.

So while it can handle HD video (thanks to the GMA 4500MHD), if you do choose to opt for the lower specification models, I can imagine performance will dwindle.

The Vostro V13 is available from Dell direct from as little as £399 for the base unit while the model we reviewed costs £559. All prices are ex VAT and delivery but Dell is currently running a promotion with free shipping when you spend £429 or more on a single system.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

I taken a lot of Pix in the last couple of weeks – please tell me when you like them:

{Zähne selber bleachen – Tipps

Weddings are a time of joy and love. Little girls seem to dream of their future wedding date by the time they start talking. Weddings are something that most everyone knows about years before it is their time to walk down the aisle. When the time does come, there are all sorts of planning that needs to be made. One of the most important however, is finding that perfect photographer that will capture perfect memories on one the most memorable days that many people will have.

The first thing one should consider when choosing a wedding photographer is recommendations from friends that have had a pleasant experience in the past. Start by asking close friends or relatives about potential photographers, and how well their expectations were met. Always ask if you can look over their wedding photographs. Take your time and look over each and every picture. Did this photographer capture joyous moments? Were the pictures clear? If everything seems to be your liking, then the next step is to call the photographer. If you have absolutely no leads from friends or family, then going to the yellow pages and wedding web sites would be the next best option.

It is absolutely essential that you trust your wedding photographer. Even if you’ve been given wonderful recommendations about a certain photographer, it is up to you to take the extra step. The pictures hanging on Aunt Martha’s walls may be splendid, but you still need to do a little more digging on your own. The second step is to contact the photographer and set up an appointment.Simply e-mailing a prospective photographer would not be sufficient. Remember that we are talking about lifetime memories here. You want to make sure you have in person interview with the photographer so you can ask all the questions you need, and get a close up look at previous work done. Once you meet with potential photographers, developing a friendship is of utmost importance. This photographer will be photographing family and friends in an up close and personal manner. You want to make sure that you are comfortable enough to get your views across. Remember that there are no “do overs” when it comes to a wedding day.

Third, make you sure ask to see a portfolio of the photographer’s work. This will give you a good indication of the photographer’s abilities and sense of style. More often than not, people who appreciate portfolio work will also appreciate the results of their wedding pictures.

The fourth, and sometimes most difficult task, is discussing price, yet this is a must. Once you have narrowed down the photographer that you want, it’s time to get the plan in action. The more experienced photographer will almost always charge more. Make sure that your budget will allow you to afford what you need. Ask how many photographs will be taken, and if you are allowed to keep the negatives. Keeping the negatives will be invaluable if you ever want to reproduce any copies. Have the photographer explain everything that you will be entitled to. If the price seems a bit too steep, a little negotiating never hurt anyone. You want to have beautiful pictures, yet you do not want to go bankrupt in the process.

The fifth and final tip happens on the big day. Now that you have already met your photographer, you can be comfortable that an unkempt professional will not be showing up on your beautiful wedding day. By now, you know what kind of work your photographer does what the prices are, and how well you two get along. Do a quick run through with the photographer one last time, and let the magic begin. Enjoy yourself and let the photographer capture brilliant moments.

There is no better way to capture the special memories of a wedding than through photographs. Pictures are keepsakes that will bring joy for many years to come. With a little research, quality wedding pictures can become a reality on your wedding day.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A collector is defending his recent purchase of a century-old photo believed to depict children born as slaves after similar images found online called its rarity into question.

The photo found in a North Carolina attic in April was part of a trove of pictures and documents bought by collector Keya Morgan for $50,000. Morgan and an art historian say they believe the photo depicted two children who were either slaves or just emancipated in the early 1860s.

Since an Associated Press story was published last week about the photo and Morgan’s claims that it was extremely rare, critics have located similar images of the children on eBay and at a digital archive of the New York Public Library. Bloggers and anonymous commenters said the existence of the other images casts doubt on Morgan’s claims that the photo is an original taken around the time the Civil War began.

But the New York collector said his photo was made from the original negative taken of the two children in the 1860s, while the others appear to be poor-quality copies made years later. He said his picture is a wet plate albumen print, which produces rich tones.

Will Stapp, a photographic historian and founding curator of the National Portrait Gallery’s photographs department at the Smithsonian Institution, agreed that Morgan’s photo is made from the original negative, but said he couldn’t determine whether the others were copies made later.

The picture depicts a child identified by writing on an album sleeve as John, barefoot and wearing ragged clothes, perched on a barrel next to another unidentified young companion.

Morgan said he paid $30,000 for the album of photos and $20,000 for a document describing the sale of a slave named John, which Morgan said is connected to the photo.

“If you are buying a Picasso painting, let’s say for $20 million, you have to go to a professional who sells Picassos for an expert opinion not somebody who sells a copy for $10 on eBay,” said Morgan, who recently debuted a rare image of entertainer Marilyn Monroe with President John F. Kennedy. “If anybody understands this, it’s myself.”

The eBay and library photos were listed as stereoviews, which can look 3D when seen with a viewer, and credited to a photographer named Jerome Nelson Wilson. The eBay image was sold with other photos for less than $200 last week.

Wilson could have obtained the negative for the original or a copy of the negative and made prints from that, Stapp said.

Stapp and Morgan said the photo discovered in North Carolina was created by somebody associated with the photography studio of Mathew Brady, a famous 19th-century photographer known for his portraits of historical figures.

However, Bob Zeller, president of the Center for Civil War Photography, said that it was unlikely that Wilson would have reproduced a Brady picture when there were other Wilson photos in the eBay listing that showed black subjects.

He said that since there were multiple stereoviews attributed to Wilson, it is more likely that he originally took the photo of the two children. Still, Zeller said he couldn’t rule out that a Brady photographer took the shot.

“So, ‘Which way did the street go?’ is kind of the question,” he said.

An estate petition uncovered in the past week also raises the question of whether the 1854 slave sale document bought by Morgan could refer to someone other than the John in the picture. Morgan’s document details the sale of a slave named John from the estate of George W. Potter.

Potter had died before the sale. The AP located an undated petition by the estate’s administrator, requesting the court’s permission to sell “a certain negro John aged 27 or 28 years” to settle Potter’s debts to “sundry persons.”

Given that the John described would have been in his 30s by the time Morgan thinks the photo was taken, there is no way the John in the photo could be the same John mentioned in the petition.

However, Morgan said he still thinks his photo and document are linked, and that there could have been other slaves named John whom the petition was describing.

A search at the North Carolina State Archives turned up no detailed inventory of Potter’s estate, which could have listed if he had more than one slave named John.

Harold Holzer, an author of several books about Lincoln and an administrator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he wasn’t sure about the origin of the photo, but that it’s poignant no matter what.

“It’s a powerful image and a beautifully composed image by whoever took it, whenever it was taken,” he said.

So, uh, this is awkward and I’m only blogging about it in the hopes that some bigger publication will take the (naked) baton and run with it. Hayley Williams, lead singer of band-that-I-love Paramore, wound up Tweeting a nude photo of herself a couple weeks back (probably hacked, etc.), and yesterday, that photo showed up on the Huffington Post. But not as part of a “SINGER ROCKS TOPLESS ” headline! Instead, a censored version of the shot with an iPad Photoshopped onto it (I repeat: an iPad Photoshopped onto it) appears as a photo illustration for an article on Cupidtino.com, an online dating site for people who love Apple products. Cupidtino.com has the credit for the photo, so they, not HuffPo, may be too blame, but: pretty fucked either way, right? Hey SPIN, want to defend your cover star?

@ Jaz 6/16/10, 10:22:am, “The grandmother of the child who has custody has stated that the child is NOT Tiger’s and her daughter is attempting to extort money from Tiger for her silence. She is allegedly in deep debt and is in need of thousands of dollars. All of this”

That’s what I’m — well the article — is saying! Thank you for saying it before me. As for the real father being black puerto rican, I hadn’t heard that. I think it would be funny as hell for her to get caught using semantics to cover her bootyhole. Like, yeah, Tiger is the only black man she’s ever dated… but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t slept with other black men, just never dated them … oh, and latinos don’t count as black, even if they’re darker than snipes. That kind of semantic bootyhole covering.

I don’t know who this child’s father is, I just feel sorry for him that he has such a worthless mother.

A Product Review of the Best Selling 15.4″ Toshiba Satellite A215-S5857 Laptop

Samsung ToC T240 by David Leggett

{Jacken in XXL-Größe für starke Damen und Herren im Online Shop kaufen

Budget level laptops are outselling many of the more expensive options the manufactures are offering these days. This can be attributed partly because of the slowing economy and partly because hardware manufactures like Intel are producing more and more powerful processors at an inexpensive price making more powerful budget notebooks. The Toshiba Satellite A205-S5841 15.4″ Laptop falls into this budget notebook category and I've gotten my hands on one. In this review I'm going to let you know what you can expect out of it and if it is worth your money. Let's begin with the basics.

Hardware:

Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium

Display: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.73 GHz Intel Pentium T2370 dual-core

Storage: 160GB

RAM: 2GB of RAM (cannot be expanded)

Optical Drive: an integrated CD burner R/RW with dual layer DVD +/- R RW burner

Video Card: An Integrated Intel GMA X3100 (which steals 256mb of system ram to use)

This budget Toshiba comes in their current trend color onyx blue. The screen is great, and glossy. This Toshiba is fairly mobile and isn't too bulky. It is made from the same “shell” as their more expensive offerings. The differences here clearly start with the motherboard. This notebook comes loaded with 2 GB of ram which is fine for this level of notebook, however it isn't expandable. So if you plan to use this laptop for a long period of time, you won't be able to upgrade the RAM down the road, just something to keep in mind. Also the processor is only a 1.73 which does just fine for the majority of applications but don't expect to play any graphically intensive games. The video card seals the deal with the gaming limitations. It is integrated and shares its memory with the system RAM.

The battery life is average on this notebook and the hard drive actually has a good amount of space for what this notebook is being designed for. Lets get to the connectivity.

Connectivity:

Integrated WiFi (to connect to wireless networks)

4 2.0 USB ports (to connect your iPod, digital camera, printer or whatever else you may have)

1 FireWire (connect your notebook to another PC or to transfer digital video from your camcorder)

1 VGA (use this to connect to computer monitors)

1 S-Video (this can connect to some TV's but it is mostly for connecting your notebook with projectors)

1 audio out / mic in (self explanatory)

ExpressCard (for connecting things like a Bluetooth adaptors, which you'll need to buy since this notebook isn't integrated with it)

It has a good amount of connectivity for a “budget” notebook. I like that it has 4 USB ports, which is 1 more than standard. I do wish it had integrated Bluetooth. You may want to invest in an external Bluetooth module to add on if you decide to purchase this notebook. With that you'll be able to use Bluetooth enabled peripherals like mice and keyboards (wirelessly) as well as being able to sync with your phone.

Although I have been critical of it for $600 this is a great notebook. It will please just about any casual user. It will do plenty of work on the road and download plenty of songs to listen to and movies to watch. The only things it won't really do are graphic editing and intensive gaming. Watch for this one to drop pretty low when things slow down in the summer. If it does I would hop on it.

CheapestHP Mini 210-1085NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook – 9.75 Hours Of Battery Life

It’s great!

I have been very pleased with this Netbook. I shopped around a little and considering the cost and capability of the machine I am very happy with my purchase. It is lightweight, easy to use, and has a great battery life. I haven’t had a time yet that I couldn’t use it for everything I needed to in a day without having to plug it in and charge it, which may only be a few hours, but I don’t turn it off in-between, I just close the netbook and it draws very little power. It’s functionality is wonderful. The two finger scrolling is very handy as well.

The only drawbacks that I have is that there are some software applications that really don’t fit the screen (you can’t use them in some of the ways you normally would, just because of the size of the screen), and because of the increased battery life the battery does stick out of the back of the computer a little, which is annoying at times. However, the size of the screen is what you should expect when purchasing a netbook, and the battery life is such a plus that I actually expected the battery to stick out the back. As far as carrying this one around college, I believe it is the perfect size.

Overall, it may not be the best netbook out there, but I would recommend it to a friend.HP Mini 210-1040NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – 9.75 Hours of Battery Life

My new favorite computer

I had a Radio Shack Modle 100 for several years and carried it with me everywhere. It was a great for basic word processing, check book balancing and scheduling. For my purposes laptops only went downhill after that. They were too klunky, heavy and expensive.

I did a lot of research before purchasing the HP mini. One of the factors that influenced my decision is that HP has redeemed itself as a computer company. Compared to other netbooks I tried the HP felt solid and well built. I saw a couple of reviews that criticized the HP’s large battery compartment. For me that has not been a problem, and I love the battery’s long life. Even though my vision is on the poor side, the 10 inch screen is very readable. I just move the screen closer and don’t even notice the size.

Like the old Modle 100, I can carry the HP mini 210 everywhere I go. Having a laptop is fun again.

Excellent Netbook

I was a little reluctant to buy a netbook…thinking that the keyboard and screen would be small and
difficult to see and operate. This is definitely not the case. I adjusted quickly to a slightly smaller
keyboard and the display’s resolution is vivid and bright. I am a real estate appraiser and use the netbook
in the field to access real estate data and to connect to my office or home computer with “log me in free”.
Works great on both counts. Battery life is as advertised and between this and my smart phone I have never felt
so “connected”.

Hugs HP Netbook

I’m sorry I’m not able to offer a well-informed opinion as I am practically techno-illiterate. Really. Just a step above a Luddite.

But I needed something that I could actually consider portable (as opposed to my beloved laptop-which I love, but is just too bulky for me to throw in a bag and run). Anyhoo, after looking in a few stores and online and reading the various folks reviews of similar products here, I decided on this. And, Yay! It’s everything I wanted. I can’t vouch for how well it manages more complicated aplications but for me to just acess email when I’m away from home (because I have sausage fingers, and don’t think I could manage IPhone use), and surf a few sites on the web, it’s been great. The battery life is always more than enough. The set up was easy and use is easy. Easy for me = Win.

I got the sleeve they offerd her to go with it, and a small “Kensignton” wireless mouse (though the touch pad on this unit is easier to use than others I have tried, so I don’t always need the mouse).

The unit arrived in a timely manner and was well protected in its pakaging.

I just got an HP laptop with windows vista home premium?

the thing is the mouse hangs intermitently and eventually picks up after a few seconds. but sometimes, it doesnt pick up at all, and i ave to navigate using buttons and shortcuts. there are instances where i have to restart the computer because the mouse wont work at all. what do I do about it and how do i resolve the problem forever. will it be better if i get a usb mouse?

if the mouse is hanging, I would take it back to where you bought it and exchange the laptop with another one.

hi i hav hp laptop compaq nx5000 where can i change mouse settings i want double click option.?

i been to control panel then mouse but dont know y i cant fix my problem. at the moment i click on the links once and i can open things.

I assume you’re using Microsoft Windows as an operating system. Click on “Start” and go to Control Panel. This setting needs to be changed in Folder Options. So click on “Folder Options”. On the General tab, you can now make your preferred changes. Just select the “Double-click to open an item (single-click to select” option.

The name Acer may not be familiar with many people but to me it usually means high quality at a great price. The Acer Aspire 5720-4649 is no exception. Because they don't spend the money on advertising the consumer reaps the benefit. I'm going to discuss what you can find on the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook, how it performs, and what type of notebook user this device caters to.

The Hardware:

Screen Size: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 processor;

RAM: 1 GB (expandible to 2)

Storage: 160 GB

Optical drive: CD-R/RW combined dual layer DVD R/RW burner

Weight: 6 lbs

Graphics Card: Integrated Intel Graphics Accelerator X3100

Platform: Windows Vista Home Premium

Acer doesn't have a big time name like Sony, Apple, or HP but they have been around a while and if you know much about the technology industry they're not a new name to you. They've been around as long as I have been computing; in fact I remember when they were the first manufacturer to produce a black colored PC. Before Acer came along all PC's were that ugly gray color for the most part. So if you're concerned about the brand name, don't any more concerned than you would be with an HP, Sony or whatever Acer is established and make a quality product, this laptop is no exception.

The first thing you notice about this little budget priced notebook is how well built it is. It is extremely robust and the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 feels like a brick. Unfortunately it's about as heavy as a brick. But if you're not going to be treating your notebook with much respect then this is a good option for you, its robust. It also runs quite cool, meaning that you can leave it on and in sleep mode in its bag without concerning yourself with it burning up.

This Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook's display cranks away at a resolution of 1280 x 800. The CrystalBright display offers fairly good clarity with limited glaring. It is a little difficult to see in the direct sunlight. It gets a little washed out if you're using the laptop outside. Other than that it looks performs pretty standard.

The notebook is a little underpowered but if you limit your multitasking you won't be bothered too much by it. The integrated graphics card means you want be playing to many graphic intensive games however it performs fine for everyday tasks. You'll be able to watch plenty of movies, and play around with home videos to an extent. The hard drive at 160 GB is adequate for this notebook's price range. I did find however that 1 GB of ram is not enough. You'll need to expect to perform an upgrade if you want to do much at all. Windows Vista is a fairly intensive platform to be running and 1 GB of ram just isn't cutting it. Especially considering the integrated graphics card shares the on board ram as its Video ram. Alright enough about the hardware lets talk about the connectivity.

Connectivity:

4 2.0 USB inputs (you can use these for things like your iPod, printers, your digital camera as well as other things)

1 FireWire (This is for high speed downloading of digital video files from your digital camcorder)

Express Card

5 in 1 Media reader (This is for the little solid state memory cards that your Digital camera uses)

1 VGA out (this is for your standard monitor)

1 audio out / 1 mic

1 Ethernet jack

1 Modem jack

For the price range im surprised at the connectivity options. It has 4 USB ports which is 1 more than what I would consider standard. They're also well placed, sides and back. The firewire port is nice but I don't know if its really needed. With the integrated graphics card and single GB of ram I wouldn't expect to do much intensive video editing but it might be fun to play around with, just don't expect to do too much without some considerable lag. It is missing Bluetooth which I would like to see in any notebook but you can easily add this with a USB adaptor.

All together the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 available at under $600 is perfect for the all business notebook user or the notebook user on a budget. It would also be great for students that aren't interested in gaming, but mostly school work as well as the occasional movie, DVD burning session or CD burning session.

I was very impressed with the modern full sized chicklet keyboard that allowed for very fast typing. However it was apparent that there was a lot of flex when using the outer edges that gave the impression of poor build quality. There’s obviously no room for a numeric keypad, but the layout is respectable with multimedia controls on the right.

The track pad however was all in all a joy to use. With its large surface area you are quickly and easily able to navigate the screen, and with just the right texture which allows your finger to glide over the surface without being too “smooth”.

The traditional two buttons have been replaced by one long button giving an easier user experience with the buttons being intuitive.

Now consider that you’ll probably end up looking at this laptop for the most of the day you probably will want some design perks.

To be honest the use of Dark Grey, Grey and Black may not suite everyone’s design taste, nevertheless it still came across as a modern looking laptop and simply cuts the crap with curves, lights and every other hated bling. Consequently the 4810T comes across as more of a business laptop rather than a consumer laptop.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

I taken a lot of Pics in the last months – please tell me what they tell you:

Torture room, Rothenburg ob der Tauben by jprowland

Most of my photo shoots come around through word of mouth. Someone mentions their own photos to a friend, and usually mentions the rates for a shoot. Very often, I get interested people based solely on my rates. Whenever that is the case, it is certain that a photo shoot never happens.

I will get an email where the only thing mentioned is how low my rates are, and that they want to make an appointment. They never mention any photos, and they usually have ideas that are nothing like what I do. I can tell when someone has not bothered to look at some of my photos. These people apparently fall off the earth and no-show the appointment.

Very few people are courteous enough to let me know it is not going to work out. It seems the price is right, but I was not.

That is fine. I would not want to be for everyone. This demonstrates to me that there is much more value in a photographer than how much he costs. It will take some work, but finding the right photographer for you will make the experience much better. And give you photos that you love.

I wanted to write a quick guide of what to consider when hiring a photographer for your personal photos. Now this comes from personal experience, so I am sure other photographers have different ideas and expectations. Since that is the case, the number one rule is – communicate with the photographer.

With the affordability of digital cameras, anybody can become a photographer. Becoming a good photographer is another story however. Take a quick look at Craigslist and you can find many pro and would-be photographers in your area. You most likely have a photographer in your family as well. Not just anyone is going to be the best photographer for you though.

Find a Photographer

Determine how much you are willing to spend. Despite just saying cost is not the most important factor, it will give you a guideline for the type of photographer you should look for. Will you be looking at pro photographers with years in the business, or an amateur just getting started? As you look over portfolios, focus on the photographers that create the kinds of photos you would want to be in. Do you want to be in a studio, or at a location?

Ask questions. You are the customer. I do not understand why people feel nervous about creative types like photographers, but do not be shy. Make sure to ask all the questions that you have. It helps to understand who your photographer is, how he works and what he expects of you. Ask about prints and copyright issues. Understand exactly what you are about to get.

Do not haggle for rate discounts. If you do not want to pay the rate he is asking, then move along. This is not a Turkish bazaar.

Share your ideas. This might depend on the photographer, but I personally enjoy when people are comfortable enough to throw out their own ideas. You know what you like, and you probably know what makes you look good and feel comfortable. It is worth a try.

Day of the shoot

Show up on time. Better yet, show up 15 minutes early. Take a few moments to relax and not feel rushed into snapping photos. Depending on the photographer and the situation, if you show up late you may just go home empty handed. It is not uncommon for a photographer to charge a deposit on the appointment. It is probably because he is tired of people being late or no showing.

If you are going to be late, let the photographer know. If your appointment is at 7 a.m., do not call at 7:15 and say you are going to be another 20 minutes late. That is just rude. Also, do not pull a no show. If you cannot or do not want to shoot anymore, have a little courtesy and make a phone call.

Do not try to sneak in anything you have not already talked about. The price you were quoted reflects the photo shoot you discussed. Do not wait until halfway through the shoot to try to sneak Aunt Mildred in. Be respectful of the photographer and his time.

After the shoot

Give credit to the photographer. If you do not give credit where it is due – at the least you can expect some bad karma, but at the worst expect some copyright infringement litigation. Together you can determine the photo rights, but most likely, your photographer will tell you how it is going to be.

If you love your photos and had a great experience, tell your friends. There are so many options available now. Do not feel like you have to settle on anything. Become an active participant in your photos. You do not have to be a professional model to create great images that fit your personality. You just have to think beyond the white shirt and blue jeans – and find the photographer that fits you.

A young female once said, ‘if I were into hot bikie guys, I would always hang out at Deus’. Translation: Guys on bikes like to hang out at Deus Ex Machina because they love the quality custom bike and all the quality trimmings. And, seriously, even the most Toyota Corolla driving of women will be entranced by the beauty of the custom work done by this place. Men and women alike fill the humid, tin-roofed showroom, running their fingers from the rough leather seat thing to the glossy front cover thing to the shiny metal handlebar things. Of course, if you really don’t care, or don’t know how to appreciate a thing of beauty, then, surely, you will love the Deus café. Truffle oil drizzled field mushrooms appear on the breakfast menu. If that doesn’t make you bow at the Altar of Deus, then you can go to hell.

A Product Review of the Best Selling 15.4″ Toshiba Satellite A215-S5857 Laptop

A day of transcribing by fotofrivolity (wedding planning soon :-))

NIKON D40 X billig kaufen

Quite popular and coming in at under $1000 I've gotten my hands on the Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422 15.4″ laptop and have decided to give it a review. Toshiba's brand of satellite notebooks includes some of the most popular and best selling laptops around. However not all of these notebooks are worth the cash. Let's find out if this one shines, or should fade away.

Hardware:

Processor: 1.9 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58

Storage Space: 160 GB hard drive

RAM: 1 GB RAM

Optical Drive: CD R/RW with an integrated dual-layer DVD +/- Burner

Graphics Accelerator: ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card (utilizing up to 319 MB of RAM as video memory)

Dimensions: 14.3″ x 10.6″ x 1.5″ and it weighs in just shy of 6lbs.

The most obvious feature of this notebook is the onyx blue metallic bezel surrounding the gorgeous bright 15.4″ XGA LCD running at a resolution of 1280 x 800. This is a handsome design however I would make sure that you see this in person for yourself to ensure that it is in line with your tastes. Unfortunately it sort of goes downhill from here. The processor is a decent AMD however when paired with a single GB of RAM and a weak graphics card it just doesn't perform up to my standards. The boot up time was excessive I also experienced lag performing routine tasks like having multiple flash heavy browsers open. In my opinion you really need at least 2GB of RAM to operate Windows Vista smoothly.

Connectivity:

Integrated Wireless

1 Ethernet port (so that you can connect to wired networks)

4 2.0 USB ports (these are used to connect peripherals like printers, MP3 players, and digital cameras)

1 FireWire port (for high speed data transfer from a digital camcorder or between a compatible PC)

1 ExpressCard slot (this is used to add un-integrated hardware like a cellular modem or Bluetooth adapter)

1 VGA port (a typical monitor connection)

1 S-Video port (typically used to connect to projectors or compatible televisions)

1 Audio out / 1 microphone in

5 in 1 memory card reader (this is so the consumer can directly insert their solid state memory directly into the notebook)

The Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422 has surprisingly good connectivity considering it's hardware package. Performance wise I would recommend this notebook to someone who wants something simple and won't need any hard core processing power. It will be fine to operate Microsoft's Office line of products or to play movies and some music, but don't expect to play any intensive games or to bring this into your entertainment center. Priced at just under $700 I would look at comparables for a better deal, at least something with more RAM and perhaps a little better processor.

Did you see Iron Man 2 this weekend? If you’re one of the millions who did, you might have noticed the heavy presence of LG phones in the movie. (If you didn’t, then clearly product placement isn’t as great a strategy as we’ve been led to believe.) The company played up their Hollywood connections tonight at the LG Ally event here in NYC. It was our first chance to get a look at the Android 2.1 phone that’s worthy of Tony Stark himself.

We couldn’t help comparing the Ally to Motorola’s Droid — they’re about the same size and both have slide-out keyboards — and overall LG’s new baby holds up well. The screen isn’t quite as stunning as the Droid’s, but the keyboard is easier to type on. The Ally is lightweight and felt good in our hands. The curves give it a streamlined look without looking over designed. It’s definitely less boxy than the Droid, though.

While playing around in Android we noted snappy performance and we’re digging the GUI over the standard setup.

One of the features we got to play around with was an augmented reality app. We pointed the Ally’s camera at the special, limited edition Iron Man comic and watched a VR Iron Man come together and hop around the screen. It’s similar to what we saw at Toy Fair with action figures from James Cameron’s Avatar. Right now the AR offerings are limited, but LG let us know that more are on the way. Given the cool PC-based AR games we saw on display at the event, the future should be an interesting one.

We’ll have video and a full review for you as soon as we get our hands on the Ally later this week. In the meantime, check out our gallery below, including pictures of the Ally and the Droid hanging out together.

I was just bought a new notebook LG X300. This ultrathin notebook has just released by LG in March 2010. Its very nice notebook with minimalist design instead. Its only 0.7 inch thick and 2.1 pounds in weight. So I can easily bring this laptop anywhere without any problems. The different thing that this notebook has but won’t be found on ordinary laptop is the borderless touchpad. Also the new reflective keyboard is also unique thing.

The LG X300 is powered by Intel Atom at 2 GHz and comes with 2 GB RAM. The motor hard disk is replaced by 128 GB solid state disk and pre installed Windows 7 Home Premium. On the test, I am very impressed with the performance of this X300. Does not like other Intel Atom notebook, X300 looks more responsive in every application I am using. The screen is bright enough to be used under the bright light or under the sun. Its a worth notebook for mobile person. Trust me

Features of Windows Touch on Windows 7 is more popular for anyone, let alone have a very supportive hardware technologies. Recently, LG introduced a notebook measures 13.3-inch they have been certified from Mircosoft (Windows 7 Touch logo) as one of the notebooks that support the Windows Touch feature.

Diffrent with touch screen technology that uses existing additional screen to make it a touch screen, touch screen technology at Motorola has been using the built-in sensor in the screen (called Capacitive In-Cell Multi-Touch), so do not use the extra screen again. The result, image quality is better and make the size of the screen becomes thinner. Microsoft parties to ensure that LG is the first company to obtain this certificate for the product in-cell Multi-Touch.

Waste Management has grown annual dividends by 9% on average for the past 5 years. The dividend is well covered by free cash flows. Even the most recent dividend increase through these difficult times for the company from 2009 to 2010 was over 8%.

Share Repurchases

WM has avidly repurchased its own shares. During the four years of 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, WM repurchased about $3 billion of its own stock. The market cap of WM as of this writing is about $17 billion, so this is about 18% of the current market cap. Share repurchases drastically decreased in 2008 and 2009.

Balance Sheet

WM has a balance sheet that is not as clean as I would like. They have $8 billion in long-term debt and an interest coverage of only 4.3. The debt/equity ratio is 1.41, which is higher than I am willing to take in an investment like this. This is not to say the company is in danger. They have a predictable source of cash flow and have their large debt under control. They could reduce share repurchases and redirect cash towards debt if they felt it was in the best interest of shareholders. But this debt, in my opinion, reduces flexibility and options when it comes to long-term profit growth.

Investment Thesis

The average person disposes of 4.5 pounds of waste every day.

I view Waste Management as a conservative, low-growth dividend investment. The stock price is a bit expensive, it has a significant amount of debt, but the business model is great and the dividends are well-covered.

Waste Management is focusing on growing its recycling abilities. WM currently uses waste as an energy source to power 1 million homes. By 2020, they plan to double that number to 2 million homes. WM is currently constructing 10 new plants to produce 50 Megawatts of power.

WM currently recycles 8 million tons of material annually. By 2020, they plan to nearly triple that number to over 20 million tons. They have been making recycling easier for residents, and have also added new services like electronics recycling.

The business is additionally expanding its services in the following ways:
Healthcare Solutions- a branch to address the needs of healthcare waste
LampTracker- a branch to recycle the huge number of lightbulbs disposed of each year
Green Squad- a branch to help business identify operational savings through efficiency and waste reduction

At the current time I’m not a buyer. I’m not willing to pay a P/E of 16 for a company with slow growth and a lot of debt, even if I like the underlying business. I’m not saying this is a bad investment, or that the price will decrease, but simply that I don’t find the stock appealing at the moment.

EPS growth is being driven mainly by share repurchases. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the company spent nearly as much money on share repurchases as on dividends. I like companies that use their money to create shareholder value, but WM at this time does not impress me.

Risks

Waste Management’s core industry of trash is always going to be necessary, but WM does face risks anyway. They are susceptible to energy prices for powering their vast army of vehicles and operations. While they are in a conservative industry, they are still susceptible to economic weakness because trash output decreases during times of economic recession. Waste Management also faces risks in the form of contract losses to competitors if they don’t manage their business well. Nonetheless, they do have a strong, firmly entrenched business.

Conclusion and Valuation

Due to the relative expense of the stock and the modestly large amount of debt, I don’t consider Waste Management to be on the top of my buy list, but I do like the company, the industry, and the dividends. If interested in the stock, I would look for a lower entry price.

Full Disclosure: I do not own Waste Management stock at the time of this writing.

With John Key giving a keynote speech on race relations on the Treaty Grounds of Waitangi on our national day, it begs a few questions. So the Prime Minister is serious about improving race relations improving in New Zealand? I sincerely hope so. We need that kind of leadership from the top.

First, so far so good in Waitangi, as far as fisty cuffs go. No one has yet struck at, or bared their buttock, at a visiting dignitary on Waitangi, unless you count the bare-bottomed Maori warrior the other day. His only piece of clothing was material covering his loins. The rest was a free show. But Waitangi itself is the the Big Day. And if anything is going to happen, it will happen on Waitangi.

In the past, few Prime Ministers, and Prime Ministers-in-waiting, have been spared the wrath of racial injustice that such a day evokes. At this stage, it looks like the Prime Minister will leave Waitangi without the diplomatic protection squad needed to jump in front of him.

Now, back to one begging question. (That's all I've got time for). I have just watched the Great Waitangi Debate on Marae, TV One this morning. Well, bits of it. It didn't hold my interest long enough with a teenager ready to go to his American Football game. But as I listened to the debate, one question rose out of the blue:

Would the Prime Minister John Key accept his son or daughter dating a brown man or woman in New Zealand, particularly a young Maori or Pacific Islander? Yes or No.

If he can answer yes to that, then I'll know that I can take his race relations speech seriously. Otherwise, it's just another puff piece from a slick speechwriter. One that is more about looking good, rather than a genuine wish list of race relations in New Zealand.

In fact, let's put that question to other world leaders on this anniversary day.

Would you ever accept your son or daughter dating someone of a different race and colour? Yes or No.
Why THAT Question?

An email via my website from one reader, who identified as a Kiwi living in Oz, prompted me to respond further on this topic. She isn't impressed with my question aimed at John Key. With all respect, she missed my point. It was not about who would be the most suitable partners. It was: would you let them or be happy to see that happen…? Not talking about their character. Simply a question about how we still pre-judge people based on colour and race.

Based on her reaction, my hunch is she does not belong to a racial minority. Nor does she identify as Maori or Pacific. So I don't expect that she would get the historical background to my question. I suspect she has never had to navigate, and live and work between two or three worlds in Aotearoa New Zealand, or for any other country, perhaps.

To those who have never experienced racism on a personal level, it will be easy to belittle my assertion. How so? If racism has never touched your life in the home, in the workplace or at school, then in my experience, you'll miss the “knowing” that is spoken only within the safety and comfort of our kitchen tables.

In the early 90s, as apartheid South Africa was beginning to dismantle its racially segregated systems, President F.W De Klerk was the public face of a racially tolerant South Africa. For the benefit of readers who were too young to care or follow its history, apartheid South Africa was a country that previously legally sanctioned racism at every level of life from the bedroom to school to eating places to Parliament. For example, interracial marriage was prohibited in apartheid South Africa. It was a criminal offence to have sexual relations with a person of a different race.

De Klerk was the moderate voice for white Afrikaners. One ready to share political power with those they had previously subjugated for generations.

Come 1990, De Klerk delivered his famous and controversial speech on the 2nd February 1990 which announced the release of Nelson Mandela after 27 years as a political prisoner.

As a 20-something, I saw De Klerk, the public politician, as progressive and color-blind. I accepted his public speech as part and parcel of his psyche as a man and a father. He defied angry threats and calls from many white Afrikaners who refused to let apartheid go. He stood up against generations of national and institutionalised racism in a country that didn't know any different.

On Sunday 11 February 1990, De Klerk publicly released Nelson Mandela from prison. His release was broadcast live around the world. I was one of millions who stayed up all night to wait for the live satellite broadcast from Johannesburg. It marked a new dawn for apartheid South Africa.

That same day, I ended my boycott of South African products in support of government and grassroots efforts around the world to pressure South Africa to end apartheid.

A long story short, De Klerk went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize. He was feted by the world as a leader who made a difference in race relations. He ended the banning of anti-apartheid groups. He pleaded for all South Africans to work towards a new nonracial democratic constitution.

Yet in his personal life, while he dismantled apartheid laws publicly, De Klerk struggled to dismantle the same attitudes within his own home when his son Willem began dating a “mixed race” woman. Their relationship, which lead to an engagement, did not last under reported pressures from the De Klerk household.

Despite all his rhetoric, De Klerk could not put into practice his own speech about a “new South Africa” in his own home. That's a global example, of course, from a big gone era. But news coverage of a few years ago showed those attitudes still prevalent in the country. And yes, New Zealand is worlds away from South Africa's former apartheid system, thank goodness.

But here's the big reveal: in the privacy of one-on-one conversations with people in Aotearoa, I am, now and then, taken aback when one says bluntly, they would not let their child date a Maori or Pacific person. I silently think back to De Klerk's story about his son and wonder if anything's really changed with some sections of white New Zealand. It's not a common experience here in New Zealand, to be fair.

But then again, I largely ignore signs of racism, even when “beware” hazard lights are flashing in neon. I just plough right ahead and disregard the warning signs because they don't matter to me. Truly. Because I know who I am. I know who I belong to and who created me.

So I don't define myself on the views of racists of any colour, including my own. That's the other reality here: it isn't necessarily black-white or white-black racism. There's ample enough of brown-brown-black racism between ethnic groups of the institutional kind, and among ignorants.

Colour and cultural definitions of self? In daily life, colour-blind is my preferred vision. Though others may try, I refuse to define myself purely in cultural or colour terms. There's more to this brown skin than colour. And it isn't always white-on-brown-or-black racism that I've seen. Sometimes it's brown against brown. (I'm using colour definition purely for the sake of brevity). I hear pockets of ambiguous views about our melting pot, from the voices of otherwise tolerant and accepting New Zealanders ,who support racial equality as long as their child doesn't date someone of a different colour or race. Those are not isolated views and they're not confined to so-called rednecks, by the way.

So these days, because of what I've seen and heard in my lifetime in New Zealand, I'm not interested in clever speeches about race relations from a leader of any country, political party or organisation. Dare I say it, I am far from alone on that. Live that speech inside your home first before you sell it to the masses. Show me that it's more than political rhetoric aimed at winning the next place in history.

Then, believe me, if that be so with the PM, THEN I'll take Key's 'nationhood' speech seriously.

No disrespect intended. But I do rest my case.

RALEIGH — Senior forward Toni Lashley's spectacular first-half goal stood up as Marvin Ridge shut out Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in the N.C. 3A girls' soccer championship game at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Soccer Stadium at North Carolina State.

The win completed a perfect 24-0 season for Marvin Ridge, which won its first-ever N.C. girls soccer title to complete a sweep of the school year's N.C. 3A high school soccer titles in just its third year of existence. The boys won the N.C. 3A championship in November, beating Chapel Hill 2-1 in overtime.

The Mavericks notched the only goal of the game in the 19th minute, when Kaitlyn Sulser delivered a cross and Lashley made an acrobatic, mid-air volley that found the back of the net from about 10 yards out.

It was Lashley's team-leading 19th goal of the season.

Lashley, who was an offensive threat all day for the winners, was named the match Most Valuable Player.

It was a dominating performance for Marvin Ridge, as the Mavericks outshot Gibbons 19-1 and the Maverick defense did the rest. Marvin Ridge recorded its 20th shutout in 24 games and allowed only four goals all season.

Cardinal Gibbons, which rebounded after a slow 2-4-2 start this season, finished 16-5-3 overall. The Crusaders won a 2-A title in 2007.

Waxhaw Marvin Ridge 1 0 — 1

Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons 0 0 — 0

5. Speak for yourself, Lisa. Don't say “we” when you are certainly not speaking for me and a LOT of other Americans. Soccer is a cool game at the professional level — players run the field non-stop and aggressively score and block. Football is a total snoozefest compared to soccer. Of course, you're so narrow-minded you've already decided not only what you like (without ever watching a professional World Cup series), but you've also taken it upon your own irrelevant and nonthinking self to declare what everyone else in America likes. Stuff it.

I do think Federal security is going a bit overboard but there have been many incidents of violent attacks against soccer teams, particularly at World events.

Conor Meade and Brian Fitzgerald arrived in Erie from their native Ireland two weeks ago to join Erie Admirals S.C. for the 2010 National Premier Soccer League season.

Since then, they have trained hard with the Admirals and begun to adjust to their first trip to the United States.

So far, Meade gives the thumbs-up on life in Erie. “I love it. I honestly do love it,” said Meade, 25, who played for Blarney United FC, a third-tier club in Ireland, a season ago. He especially loves Erie’s lower cost of living.

“Back home, everything is very expensive,” he said. “So here, it’s very decent price-wise.”

The transition has been a bit tougher for Fitzgerald, 23, younger brother of former Mercyhurst College standout Mark Fitzgerald (1997-2000). Brian was accustomed to having three training sessions and one match per week back home. The Admirals have trained twice a day leading up to Saturday’s 3 p.m. season opener at FC Buffalo (formerly Buffalo City FC). Coupled with the seven-hour time difference, Fitzgerald said, “it’s still a little bit of a change.”

Surprisingly, both agree the toughest part of the transition has been getting acclimated to Erie’s warm weather.

“We wouldn’t be used to this weather back home,” said Fitzgerald, who played for the Tralee Dynamos soccer club in Ireland a season ago. Meade and Fitzgerald will remain in Erie until the end of the Admirals’ season later this summer.

They spent the first eight days of their stay living in Family First Sports Park’s dormitory. On Tuesday, they moved into a home at Mercyhurst College.

BetaNews has published two more pictures of the new Dell Subnotebook. Unfortunately so far there are not news about the specifications of this machine.  Would this one use the new Nano from VIA? Will Dell go with Intel? Who knows…

It’s cute, it’s red, it has a Dell logo, and for many, it’s enough. The buzz machine has been reignited, after Michael Dell gave a prominent Gizmodo writer another peek at something small it’s been cooking up in its laboratories.

this article loses a lot of sauce with comments like (and i apologize for the long cut-and-paste here_:

The fact that he can easily change the OS's underlying file structure with a simple right click enabled him to configure his XP desktop to look like the desktop on his MacBook. He was so taken with the MacBook's clean user interface that he wanted to replicate it on his Dell, so he created a short cut that takes him to all the files he's working on. The only other items on his Dell desktop—as on his Mac—are a trash can and a launch bar with icons for his e-mail client, Firefox client, a calculator, a notepad and wide area network wireless connectivity.

this “change the underlying file structure” bit was also tossed about in the OSX likes department, but with less description. I think pretty much anybody reading this website knows you don't have to “modify the underlying FS” in Windows or OSX to change the number of icons on the desktop. You right-click in a few places (excuse me: Ctrl-click)

if that wasn't bad enough, the article basically blames Apple for the problems/featureset of Entourage, which as we know, is a Microsoft Product. Yes, Entourage can only be found on a Mac, and is one of the only Exchange solutions for the platform.

What I'm getting at here is not the “his views of Windows are biased” or the “his views of OSX are biased” rant that would be so easy to do. Instead, I offer that this article is nearly valueless, and worse, actually could have negative ramifications. Shitty articles with inaccurate information and copious use of buzzwords read by gullible CIOs are the bane of sysadmin/it manager/tech wonks world wide.

My boss wants a blackberry because he's got compensation issues, not because he's got email to read in the toilet. Could be that he read an article in CIO mag once about how blackberry's will increase productivity no matter what, deployment, security and usability issues be damned.

I'm not sure what my actual point is here, just that the article is reminiscent of too many CIOs I've known (and surely, that you've known), who see buzzword 'X' tossed about in a smashingly non-technical article, and demands it be rolled out. I still have XML coming out of my ears after the internets brief flirtation with it a few years ago (of course, thanks to AJAX, it's back again).

(CAVEAT: I use a Dell d420, same notebook listed in the article as being his preferred hardware platform. Being a dork, my Windows doesn't crash, and only gets rebooted on patch days, if that. That said, if apple made anything resembling it, I'd probably pay whatever it cost.)

I’m sitting in the passenger seat of the car, about half a mile from my house, just down the lane and out of sight of home. I don’t want to go home, at least not yet, although I am fantastically tired. I’ll wait until I’m certain Sheelagh’s in bed.

She’s been working  away all week, in part because she has to, things are busy for her right now and partly so she’s not at home and therefore by association not arguing with me. I think that is absolutely tragic that it’s come to this, that we’re both happier when she’s away (the same would  also be true if I was away) But life at home, has been so much easier, so much quieter, so much more relaxed and peaceful.

Charles does his thing, I do mine, we both watch a bit of TV, spend some time chatting about cameras, photography, computers or indeed anything that takes our fancy. There hasn’t been so much as a cross word, a gripe, a niggle, a nag or snipe. The house has been reasonably tidy too, not fantastic and it’s clearly been better, but it’s been clean and tidy enough for both of us.

It’s been so relaxed this week that yesterday I even bought a bottle of cider for myself – didn’t drink it all mind you, I couldn’t. But it was nice to be able to sit down with a glass of cider and watch tv. Something I would just never be able to do if Sheelagh was around – If I drink, I relax (of course). and that means I let my guard down and combined with Sheelagh’s poisoned tongue… well that’s led to some frustrating and heated arguments. So much so, that I’ve barely had any alcohol in almost a year.

Sheelagh has worked hard this week, no denying that, but I also know that she’ll be “rewarding” herself with “well deserved” couple of bottles of poison. Most Fridays are two bottlers and tonight will be no different. Whilst she would be lovely, sweet, gentle and affectionate for the first 20 minutes or so, it would rapidly diminish towards the end of the second, if not the first glass.  Coupled with the fact that I know she loved to come home to an empty house, to come home having “her space”. I left her too it and have been out ever since.

I’m tired of being her punching bag, figuratively and all too often, literally, so it’s just easier to come out here with my ipod and the laptop. In truth, when She comes home, I have to disappear into the office  anyway, so I’d just be sitting in there with my ipod and the laptop doing exactly the same thing, the only difference being that here, I’m can’t be shouted at or otherwise abused.

Tomorrow I’m planning on going walking, don’t know where yet, but I have to go out, and be out all day too. It’s such a shame, as I’d like nothing more than to spend some time with her, but if we did I’d spend the whole day knowing that in the evening she’d ruin it – no matter how lovely the day would be, she’ll get mean in the evening and it’s so much worse when she does that after we’ve had a nice day together – it’s too extreme a contrast and it just hurts all the more. No, I’m better off just going out on my own tomorrow, I do everything else on my own another day won’t matter.

I just hope the weather stays reasonable.
