This review will be looking at Fujitsu's P7230 ultraportable. This tiny system is part of a new crop of ultraportable's that use LED backlighting in order to get great display performance while maintaining a long battery life. That is the main technological achievement of the system but it is by no means all it has going for it. The P7230 is built on an ultra mobile platform that includes an Intel Core Solo U1400 processor, an optical drive, and a 10.6" display. This smaller format factor allows for a very light weight and great portability but limits the power of the system as well as aspects that affect usability, like the size of the keyboard.

Fujitsu has dabbled in ultra-ultraportable machines for a while now, having released the LifeBook U810 and U820 tablet PCs. Now the company is ready to take baby steps into the netbook market, with its M2010. To be honest, though, this isn’t the bold move that Fujitsu should have–or could have–made.
Fujitsu’s M2010, according to company spokespeople, is geared a bit more toward kids. While not exactly child-size, the machine’s keys seem reminiscent of the keyboard on the 10-inch Acer Aspire One: a little on the smaller side, but with perfectly serviceable buttons (fujitsu fpcbp216ap computer batteires). At least the arrow keys are large on the M2010. And you’ll need them–though the touchpad has a nice, textured surface, its size is about average for a netbook. As for the screen, colors popped. Despite having the same screen size and glare-inducing coating as the Toshiba, and a slightly lower resolution (1024 by 576 pixels), the M2010 produced colors that seemed a little more vibrant and didn’t get lost in the shadows.

Overall, the design of the Fujitsu M2010 is uninspired. Its two-tone, hard-plastic case can be eye-catching, depending on the color you order (our flashy red unit drew a couple of double takes here at the office), but this 2.5-pound netbook doesn’t look much different from other models on the market. Its configuration–three USB ports (asus Eee PC 1101HA laptop battery), an SDHC card reader, a Webcam, one VGA-out, ethernet, and headphone and microphone jacks–is fairly standard, too.

Fujitsu doesn’t add much to the mix beyond Bluetooth and a few bits of bundled software. Roxio Creator LJ saves files out to external drives, as does the simple but extremely effective MyRecovery software (a three-button interface for creating and restoring system backups). The performance? Let’s just say that it’s fairly average in some cases. The guts of this wee PC vary little from those of most netbooks, consisting of a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB 5400-rpm hard drive. And with a score of 34 on WorldBench 6, it falls right in line with the performance of most current netbooks. The battery life dragged down its score the most. Fujitsu claims that the M2010’s three-cell battery hangs on for 2.5 hours, but it was more like 2 hours, 5 minutes in our tests. In the end, Fujitsu didn’t produce a bad machine–just a fairly average one. In a market already brimming with wannabes, I would have liked to see Fujitsu deliver more-daring designs, such as what it did with the U810, the U820, and the N7010 (which embedded a second touchscreen into an all-purpose portable). Plenty of other netbooks offer better performance for less. Might I suggest the Asus Eee PC 1008HA?

I will tell you upfront that this laptop isn't well designed for 3D gaming. The battery life span that comes with this laptop has the ability to last you for almost 4 hours. This laptop didn't stand well when it came down to the battery life span against its competitor which is the Asus UL50VF-A1.

From my point of view I see that the Sony VAIO VPC-EB13FXBI has the ability to fit the needs of those who are also doing multimedia tasks. If you like to edit photos, watch movies and other multitasking; this laptop is perfect for you.

Price: The price of the Sony VAI VPC EB falls in the price range of $800. The price could be cheaper if you know of sellers who tend to have great bargains on laptops.

Cons: Comparing this laptop to its competitors it falls behind when it comes down to the battery life span it comes with. Also the speakers on the Sony VAIO laptop are very weak, which I didn't like very well.

A laptop containing information on more than 600 patients at an Oconee County physicians’ practice was stolen a week ago — and now patients are being warned about the theft.

The staff of the Oconee Heart Center discovered the theft of the laptop on May 10. The practice is notifying more than 600 patients whose personal information was on the computer.

The laptop was dedicated for use with an EKG machine and did not contain a full medical record. The laptop connected to the hospital’s main IT network.

The staff said the laptop did not contain patients’ Social Security numbers, home addresses, telephone numbers or financial information.

Is it nothing more than an expensive gimmick as its has no internal DVD drive. Its true functionality is questionable. Sony do offer an external DVD drive, but that really takes away the whole portability element. No question the device will sell, but if its true value for money is a matter of some debate. The new offering retails for around $2000.

Clearly consumer electronics are at the forefront of most people minds. It could be argued that Sony are doing what they can to stand out from the competition. The glory of the free market is companies can do what they want, simply because there is no pressure to buy from them. That would probably be the response from Sony. I do think that with Sony branding plays a part. In my mind there is no question if you buy a Sony product, your paying in part for the brand. Whetever or not you think Sony products are value for money is really a matter of opinion and perception. I would argue that if your looking for the best performance at a low price Sony will rarely be the answer. On the other hand if your looking for a stylish state of the art product and price is no object why not consider Sony.

There are many models of laptops on the market, with different technical details and features, and each one is better for certain activities. Laptop Scandal School's Own Law Firm: Aside From Those 58,000 Spy Photos, There's No Evidence Of Spying

A law firm employed by the Pennsylvania school district caught using student laptop webcams to spy on students at home has released a 72-page report (pdf) on the incident after a 10-week investigation. Most of the report's findings aren't too surprising; it exonerates most higher-level school officials like any wealthy school district's in-house investigation should, concluding that there's no evidence indicating that anybody above the IT level "knew how TheftTrack worked or understood that it could collect large quantities of webcam photographs or screenshots." The report also confirms reports that the system took some 58,000 images — a far cry from the 42 images the school originally claimed.

Aside from those 57,958 extra photos and screenshots, e-mails alleging that school administrators found the spy technology entertaining — and the fact the system was only unearthed in the first place because a student's at-home behavior was spied on — the study concludes that “we found no evidence that District personnel used TheftTrack to “spy” on students.” Still, at least the report slams the school district for being "overzealous" in their use of the technology, and for having a complete disregard for student privacy:

"Although there is no forensic method to determine with certainty how often images stored on the LANrev server were viewed, we found no evidence that any District 3 personnel surreptitiously downloaded images from the LANrev server. Rather, the collection of images from laptops while they were in the possession of students resulted from the district's failure to implement policies, procedures and recordkeeping requirements, and the overzealous and questionable use of technology by IS personnel without any apparent regard for privacy considerations or sufficient consultation with administrators."

By and large the study places the lion's share of the blame on school IT folks, most of whom were already forced to retire. It does seem rather convenient that the district was allowed to hire their own law firm to investigate (at least when lawyers weren't working with plaintiffs to allegedly help keep evidence out of the hands of federal investigators). That's of course the first thing the lawyer for the district's former IS director Virginia DiMedio complained about. While the IT folks certainly appear oblivious and culpable, there seems to be plenty of incompetence to go around. Hopefully higher level administrators aren't entirely immune to the ultimate fallout, given they failed to pay any attention to the fact their district was busily building a little Macbook surveillance state with little to no accountability.
